Bethune-Cookman upsets Norfolk State 70-68 in OT
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) Adrien Coleman closed regulation with five consecutive points to force overtime and Bethune-Cookman handed top-seeded Norfolk State its first conference loss this season, 70-68, in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal action Wednesday night.
The eighth-seeded Wildcats (14-19) trailed 63-58 before Coleman converted a three-point play with 1:43 remaining. After a Spartan miss, Coleman added a fast-break layup with 1:13 left, and the 63-63 knot carried over to overtime.
Coleman finished with 24 points and his tying layup made him the 27th Bethune-Cookman player to eclipse 1,000 points for his career, finishing the game with 1,002.
Alex Smith's free throw with 2:41 left in overtime put the Wildcats ahead 67-66, and they led the rest of the way.
Norfolk State's Pendarvis Williams (19 points) missed a would-be tying jumper with 2 seconds left.
The Spartans (21-11) ran the table in 16 conference games this year, but won't defend their MEAC title.
