SFA escapes with 70-68 win over Northwestern State

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (AP) Jacob Parker stole the ball and slammed home a dunk with less than a second remaining to give Stephen F. Austin a 70-68 victory over upset-minded Northwestern State Saturday.

SFA (25-2, 14-0 Southland), which has now won 22 straight games, came dangerously close to seeing the streak halted on its home floor.

SFA had a poor shooting night and the Lumberjacks could not stop Northwestern State as the Demons made 26 of 45 shots from the field. The Lumberjacks, who hit just 27.6 percent in the first half, made 23 of 63 field goal attempts for the game.

Desmond Haymon had 18 points and Deshaunt Walker added 16 for SFA.

Northwestern State (12-13, 8-6) took the lead 68-66 with 47 seconds remaining after Gary Stewart made a layup. Haymon made two free throws to tie the game and Parker won it with a dunk.

Jalan West had 21 points for Northwestern State.
