Marseille vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
A much improved second half display carried Arsenal past a talented Marseille side with goals from Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey. The Englishman smashed home a volley on 65 minutes after good work down the right by Kieran Gibbs, before Ramsey continued his fine form and put the game beyond doubt with a 25-yard drive five minutes from time. Jordan Ayew's penalty in the last minute was little more than a consolation after the hosts had faded in the second half. Before the break, the width and pace of Elie Baup's side had caused the visitors significant problems, Andre-Pierre Gignac proving a constant threat. Wojciech Szczesny twice kept the French international out, but he could have done nothing had Rod Fanni hit the target with a powerful shot from close range a minute after the restart. As it was, though, the Gunners escaped and wrestled the impetus from their opponents. Mesut Ozil almost set up Kieran Gibbs before Bacary Sagna did likewise for Jack Wilshere, who should have scored. Walcott's first of the season couldn't have been hit much harder and Ramsey's brilliant all-round display confirms him as an emerging force at the top level. First blood to the Londoners then, Napoli having also dispatched Borussia Dortmund in Italy. We're in for some fun in this group.
Aaron Ramsey brought Andre Ayew with a late trip and the forward's brother dispatched the spot kick high into the top right corner. The whistle has gone almost immediately though. Arsenal have the win.
JORDAN AYEW makes the last couple of minutes of injury time interesting.
Arsene Wenger makes a change with three injury time minutes announced. Ryo Miyaichi replaces Mathieu Flamini. But Marseille have a penalty now!
89' OZIL
Mesut Ozil is barged off the ball fairly by Nicolas Nkoulou at the end of a 50-yard run upfield. The German has been fairly quiet tonight, Arsenal's homegrown talent taking all the plaudits.
Aaron Ramsey's superb season keeps on rolling as he beats Steve Mandanda low to the goalkeeper's right with a sweetly struck shot from 25 yards out. Granted it took a healthy deflection off Nicolas Nkoulou but the Welshman won't worry about that. He has six in all competitions already this season.
This time AARON RAMSEY doubles the Gunners' lead!
The Gunners come close again, Monreal finding Giroud with a very deep cross that the Frenchman shephards back towards Wilshere on the goal-line. The young man is so close to winning the bouncing ball from Mandanda with his head.
Marseille are throwing everything forward, with hot prospect Florian Thauvin being introduced to the fray. The hosts are controlling the ball but Arsenal have restricted them to only half chances since Fanni wasted that shot a minute into it.
It's a game of cat and mouse at the moment, as Marseille's second Ayew brother, Jordan, comes on to replace Dimitri Payet. Valbuena has another drive from distance dealt with by Szczesny before Giroud is caught offside. Here comes Nacho Monreal and Theo Walcott is leaving the field.
Olivier Giroud wins a corner for his side and then meets Walcott's delivery on the penalty spot with a firm header which flashes wide of the far-post. Giroud should have done better with that and the home side almost make Arsenal pay on the counter attack, Valbuena blasting narrowly over from the edge of the penalty area.
Lucas Mendes has a dipping shot held by Wojciech Szczesny, before two more Marseille attacks worry the Arsenal defence. The Gunners are trying to slow the pace of the game and keep possession, but they're succeeding only partially.
66' 1-0 ARSENAL
That's a vital goal for Arsenal, Walcott thrashing the ball home from 12 yards out on the right after Jeremy Morel had made a hash of heading a bouncing Kieran Gibbs cross clear. Jack Wilshere had sent the full-back free down the left and his whipped ball has set up the opener for the Gunners. They'll certainly try to play to keep this lead would think.
THEO WALCOTT breaks the deadlock for Arsenal!
Wow, a horrendous mix-up almost gifts Marseille a goal. Sagna meets a speculative cross from the left with a toe and the ball bobbles up and over the goalkeeper. Laurent Koscielny has to do very, very well to muscle Gignac out of the way and dig out a header from almost his own goal-line. Most of north London breathe a sigh of relief. It's as open now as it was in the first half. Both teams desperately want a win tonight!
The Gunners are beginnning to purr in France. Bacary Sagna's deep cross from out on the right finds Jack Wilshere perfectly at the back-post and England international's volley with his in-step forces Mandanda to get down well and block it with his legs.
That was a delightful piece of play from Mesut Ozil, popping up on the left to pop the ball back from the by-line for Gibbs to run onto. The youngster was under pressure as he ran into the penalty area and he did well to manufacture a strike. Now Marseille fire a cross in from their left which goes all the way to Dimitri Payet on the far side. His powerful shot is on target and Szczesny gets down to his left in fine fashion.
Olivier Giroud wins a free-kick in the middle of the park with a very soft decision. Ozil blasts the ball towards the penalty spot but there's a real height advantage for the home side. Then Ozil creates Arsenal's best chance of the game. Ozil back-heels the ball into the path of Gibbs in the penalty area and Steve Mandanda blocks the full-back's shot with a fine save.
That was an awful scare straight from kick-off for the visitors. Marseille's threat has been disparate, coming from all over the field and the Gunners are having to work awfully hard to cover the dynamic approach of the hosts. Ozil breaks down the right and looks for Walcott down the right. They've won a corner.
Here we go again in Marseille then, and already Rod Fanni has flashed a powerful half-volley across the bows of Wojciech Szczesny in the opening seconds. That whistled just wide of the Pole's right-hand post. He would have been some distance away from saving it.
A bright and breezy opening half of football to counter Arsenal's often cagey approach to playing away in the Champions League. Both sides have looked to take the initiative and it is the hosts who are having the best of it so far. Andre-Pierre Gignac's robust forward display has opened up a number of holes in the Gunners' back-line, Wojciech Szczesny twice called upon to thwart the Frenchman at close quarters. Two early sighters for Theo Walcott are closest the visitors have come, and, as Arsene Wenger has been at pains to point out leading up to the game, they don't have much to rely on from the bench. Will Elie Baup's men make their dominance pay or can the Londoners sneak a precious three points? Join us shortly to find out...
We're nearing half-time in a game that has been almost constant action from the off. Some free-flowing, attack-minded play from both sides has brought plenty of worries for both defences. It's Mathieu Valbuena out on that right flank once more, launching a free-kick to the back-post where the ball breaks for Gignac. The striker takes his man on and forces Szczesny to come out and challenge him well. The whistle goes for half-time.
The home side send a brilliant ball into the Arsenal penalty area and Gignac's header forces Wojciech Szczesny to turn the ball around the post. Then two Giannelli Imbula corners come raining in and twice Aaron Ramsey is under pressure from the big French forward. On the second one he beats Ramsey to the ball and his angled near-post header goes narrowly over the crossbar. That was good from Marseille.
Arsenal have controlled the ball in the last few minutes and occupied possession on the edge of the hosts' penalty area. Wilshere and Ramsey are trying to prise an opening in the home rearguard, and finally Sagna puts his boot to the ball out on the right, but no-one is there and Marseille come away with it.
Giroud rises highest at the near-post to clear a Marseille corner and Wilshere helps it on his way, giving Ozil the chance to chase the ball high up the field. Then Bacary Sagna overlaps down the right, the play is spread inside and Ramsey has a drive charged down on the edge of the penalty area. The Welshman wins it back and the visitors send a cross in from the right which does not threaten.
The game takes a lull. The play has spread very, very wide on the pitch, Marseille seeming to wish to use every inch of it. Gignac launches a cross in which is too long, though Valbuena returns it with interest, also too long.
Marseille are trying to come down the flanks, whilst Arsenal are taking more of a central approach to their forward play. Ramsey looks for Ozil in the penalty area, but the Frenchmen clear their lines. It's the Gunners in the ascendency at this moment in time.
We have a very open, flowing, enjoyable encounter on our hands right now. Jack Wilshere is trying to pull the strings on the counter for Arsenal and almost finds both Ozil and Flamini in dangerous positions on seperate occasions. Marseille breathe again though, and seem to want a lead to take into half-time themselves. There's no air of playing for a draw whatsoever tonight.
Andre Ayew crowns Marseille's best spell of the match with a fizzing shot from 25 yards out in the middle, which flies just wide of Wojciech Szczesny right-hand post. That was the closest we've come, and Marseille come forward again, sweeping a ball into the box, only for Arsenal to break away.
Andre Ayew sashays down the left and pings a pass inside to Gignac but the forward's first-time shot is high and wide. Ayew takes it up moments later and spreads the ball wide to Rod Fanni on the right. Gignac is there again and his second shot in as many minutes is equally wide of the mark.
A Marseille corner is aimed at Lucas Mendes deep in the penalty area and the man who has two goals in as many games gets his head to it, but not strongly enough. Then Dimitri Payet volleys a ball across the face of goal from out on the right, but that too is wayward. The hosts are beginning to find their range, though.
Aaron Ramsey robs Mathieu Valbuena in brilliant fashion on the edge of the Arsenal penalty area as the Frenchman slalomed through the midfield. Arsenal break to no avail. Wilshere is fed by Giroud and the youngster tries to bully his way past the home defence, but he pokes the ball too far ahead of himself.
A fairly even start at the Stade Velodrome despite those two early sniffs at goal for Walcott. Both sides are sitting fairly deep and keeping their shape, looking to attack and defend as a unit. Jack Wilshere looks long for Olivier Giroud but Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda intervenes.
Theo Walcott is through again early on, running onto a bouncing ball on the right of the penalty area but he can't quite get a strike on goal with Lucas Mendes pressuring him.
A cagey start is shaken off by Mesut Ozil down the right as he almost finds Theo Walcott in the penalty area but that through-ball is just too long.
Here we go, then. Arsenal get us underway in their change yellow shirts and blue shorts, with Marseille all in white.
So Arsenal make one change from their victory over Sunderland at the weekend. Per Mertesacker comes in for Carl Jenkinson, who is part of a fairly inexperienced line-up of substitutes for the Gunners. Andre Ayew is in from the start for Marseille, as are French internationals Andre-Pierre Gignac and Mathieu Valbuena.
Welcome to coverage of the game from Marseille. We're about ready to get underway. The sides will line up as follows... Mandanda, Fanni, N'Koulou, Lucas Mendes, Morel, Romao, Imbula, Payet, Valbuena, Andre Ayew, Gignac. Subs: Samba, Mendy, Cheyrou, Jordan Ayew, Lemina, Thauvin, Khelifa. Arsenal: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Flamini, Ramsey, Walcott, Wilshere, Ozil, Giroud. Subs: Fabianski, Vermaelen, Monreal, Jenkinson, Miyaichi, Akpom, Hayden.
Group F of this year's Champions League is a humdinger, with every match sure to be hotly contested. Arsenal are on a nine-match winning streak away from home and they will see a good start against slight outsiders Olympique Marseille as crucial, with Napoli and Borussia Dortmund to follow. The Gunners' fine opening to the Premier League has come at a cost, injuries beginning to mount up. They have seven games to follow in the next month and a lot resting on a core group of first teamers. The sides have met once before at this level, two years ago, when Aaron Ramsey settled matters at the Stade Velodrome before a goalless draw at the Emirates.
Last year's Ligue 1 runners-up have been largely overshadowed by big-spending PSG and Monaco of late. It's three years since they last captured the French title and a full twenty since the glory days of Deschamps and Voller carried them to Europe's biggest club crown. Ten points from a possible 15 so far this term sees them in fourth position, though early points dropped by the big two suggests there will once again be all to play for in France. Elie Baup, who has Andre Ayew to choose from for tonight's encounter and may also risk recently recovered defender Souleymane Diawara, echoed sentiments of which Arsene Wenger would be proud before the match, "We are building a young side. These Champions League games are a means of progress and learning for our young and inexperienced players. We want to achieve something. It will have to be a collective effort."
Crisis? What crisis? Unbeaten in five, second in the league, with a world star and a rejuvenated striker setting the Emirates alight of late. Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud have both recovered to make themselves available for tonight, and they're also the principal reasons why Arsene Wenger's perilous position of two weeks ago now seems a world away. Granted the Gunners are skating on thin ice selection wise, with Podolski, Arteta, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Diaby just the start of their absentee list. However, they've made a habit of substituting guile and graft for spending power, particularly away from home in the Champions League. Plus, with Ozil onboard, they'll fear no-one, no matter how deep into the competition they go. Pre-match, Wenger hinted at an attacking approach tonight, "It is a tough group. We will need ten points to qualify and all four teams can qualify. All the games will be important. We will need to pick up points away from home and we will try to win in Marseille. We cannot predict that we will win all our home matches but we will try and start well to get in the right position."
