Manchester United vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' FT: MAN UTD 2 ARSENAL 1
Manchester United go top of the Premier League for the first time this season, though Chelsea can overhaul them again with victory at Swansea in today's 1500GMT kick-off. The all-important opening goal was scored, predictably, by Robin van Persie, just three minutes into his first match against the club he left in the summer. Van Persie produced a sumptuous finish after being gifted the ball by Thomas Vermaelen, who blundered when trying to clear a cross from the right. United could have doubled their lead in the first half, forcing Vito Mannone into two good saves before Rooney missed a penalty awarded after handball by Santi Cazorla. Theo Walcott came on just after the break and the previously feeble visitors instantly looked more threatening for a while, with Olivier Giroud striking the outside of a post. But midway through the second half Patrice Evra was allowed the space to head home from a Rooney corner and further heartache came Arsenal's way when midfielder Jack Wilshere was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Santi Cazorla pulled one back for the visitors with the final kick of the match. A sobering thought for Arsenal fans is that only ten games into the season they are already nine points behind United. You have to say at this early stage that Van Persie's decision to move to Old Trafford in search of trophies appears to be a good one.
90' GOAL: MAN UTD 2 ARSENAL 1
Santi Cazorla pulls one back for Arsenal with a rasping shot deep into stoppage time. The final whistle comes before the restart.
90' GIROUD DENIED
Arsenal almost grab a late consolation, but Giroud is denied at point-blank range by De Gea.
90' ARSENAL BOOKING
Mikel Arteta is cautioned for catching Robin van Persie with a flailing arm as the pair contested an aerial challenge.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of four minutes of added time.
88' LOOKING FOR A THIRD
If you offered Arsenal 2-0 now, they would take it. United are looking for more and win a corner, which is cleared by Santos.
84' TRIVIA ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who was the only current player to have netted more Premier League goals away from home as a substitute than the seven managed by United's Javier Hernandez. The answer: Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, who has scored nine goals.
83' ARSENAL BOOKING
Arshavin has been on the field a matter of seconds and already he is in the book, for a foul on Anderson.
82' MAN UTD BOOKING
Rooney is shown the yellow card after a foul on Arteta. In the meantime, Podolski makes way for Arshavin for Arsenal and Nani replaces Valencia for United.
80' GOAL DISALLOWED
Anderson has the ball in the net after a cross from Van Persie, but the flag is up for offside.
77' WALCOTT FIRES HIGH
Carrick's lazy pass is intercepted by Cazorla, who puts Walcott clear down the right. The shot from the England winger is rushed and rises high into the stand behind the goal.
75' TRIVIA TIME
Javier Hernandez has scored seven Premier League goals away from home playing as a substitute. Only one current player has netted more, but can you name him? Answer in a few minutes.
73' MAN UTD BOOKING
An Anderson body-check on Arteta means the Brazilian is the latest player into Mr Dean's notebook.
71' WILSHERE RED CARD
Jack Wilshere is late into a tackle with Patrice Evra and can have no complaints at getting a second yellow card, especially after being warned not long before.
68' MORE ON THAT GOAL
That Arsenal reprieve was short lived. Rooney worked a short corner and delivered a cross into the centre where the diminutive Evra rose highest to head into the corner.
67' GOAL: MAN UTD 2 ARSENAL 0
Patrice Evra doubles United's lead.
66' VAN PERSIE DENIED
The flag wrongly stays down as Robin van Persie is all alone in the centre and collects a pass from Young. The Dutchman is odds-on to score, but Mannone makes a wonderful diving save low to his right.
64' VERMAELEN GOES CLOSE
A dipping free-kick from the right by Wilshere causes problems for the United defenders with the low sun in their eyes. Giroud flicks it on, but Vermaelen is unable to apply the crucial final touch beyond the far post.
63' MAN UTD SUBSTITUTION
Anderson takes the place of Cleverley for United.
62' MAN UTD BOOKING
Van Persie is booked for a very late tackle on Sagna. That was so reckless he could have had few complaints had the card been red.
60' CLEVERLEY REPRIEVED
Tom Cleverley is fortunate to escape a second yellow card after hacking down Jack Wilshere, who was himself given a reprieve only a couple of minutes earlier.
58' PENALTY CLAIMS
United want a penalty for handball after Rooney's shot hits Mertesacker, but referee Mike Dean rightly waves away their protests.
57' WASTED BY SANTOS
A wonderful Arsenal passing move ends with Cazorla putting in Santos down the left. The cross from the Brazilian is hugely disappointing and goes straight out for a goal-kick.
54' GIROUD HITS THE POST
Cazorla delivers a ball low into Giroud and the Frenchman escapes the attentions of Evans before driving a shot against the outside of the post from a narrow angle. That's better from Arsenal.
52' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Theo Walcott takes the place of the disappointing Aaron Ramsey for Arsenal.
50' CARRICK WELL OFF TARGET
United pile on the pressure as Arsenal's defence continues to look nervy and unsure. Carrick obeys the crowd's demands to shoot but his effort is yards wide of the target. Giroud gets clear down the other end but his cross is misplaced.
49' TIME FOR THEO, SURELY
Arsene Wenger has resisted the temptation to make changes at the break, but you have to think we will see Theo Walcott before too long.
48' WHAT A MISS FROM VALENCIA
Vermaelen makes another huge mistake and gifts the ball to Van Persie again. A cross from the right is delivered perfectly to Valencia, who mis-kicks from six yards with the goal at his mercy.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
United kick off the second half.
45' HT: MAN UTD 1 ARSENAL 0
United lead at the break in a match that has been so much more one-sided than their slender interval advantage would suggest. It took Robin Van Persie just three minutes to hurt his former employer for the first of what you would guess would be many, many times over the coming years. The Dutchman was perfectly placed to collect a woeful attempt at a clearance from Thomas Vermaelen and thumped an instinctive right-foot shot into the corner. Arsenal enjoyed lengthy spells of possession without creating anything meaningful and have not looked like fighting their way back into this match at any stage. United, by contrast, have appeared dangerous almost every time they have gone forward and Vito Mannone made good saves from Van Persie and Rooney to prevent the home side from adding to their lead. United were awarded a penalty in first-half stoppage time after Santi Cazorla put his arms up to protect himself and charged down a cross from the left by Ashley Young. Rooney, though, clipped the post with his spot-kick.
45' PENALTY MISSED
Rooney hits his penalty poorly and it strikes the outside of the post and goes wide. Arsenal are still breathing. Barely.
45' UNITED PENALTY
Santi Cazorla charges down a cross from Ashley Young with his arms and the referee has awarded a penalty.
44' SLICED BY MERTESACKER
Mertesacker slices an attempted clearance from a Rooney cross from the right and is relieved to see the ball deflect out for a corner.
43' FERGIE ON TOP
This is the 48th meeting in all competitions between Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. Ferguson leads by 21 wins to 15. Fergie's on his way to 22, judging by what we have seen so far.
40' GIROUD HEADS WIDE
Olivier Giroud escapes his marker to make space for himself at an Arsenal corner delivered from the left but heads disappointingly into the crowd from a good position.
38' MAN UTD BOOKING
There is no reprieve for Tom Cleverley, however, as he hacks down Santi Cazorla and is booked.
35' CARRICK ESCAPES A CAUTION
Michael Carrick escapes with a warning after a tackle from behind on Jack Wilshere.
33' WASTED BY CLEVERLEY
United break swiftly after Van Persie's header puts Cleverley in the clear, but the England man's cross from the right is poor with men standing unmarked in the middle.
30' MAN UTD BOOKING
Ashley Young is cautioned for a late tackle on Bacary Sagna.
29' MANNONE SAVES AGAIN
The offside flag rightly stays down as Rooney collects an incisive pass from Carrick down the United left. The England striker forces a diving stop from Mannone, who is then well behind a follow-up effort from Van Persie.
28' STYLE VERSUS SUBSTANCE
Arsenal have been enjoying much of the possession in the last few minutes, but by and large their passing has been getting them nowhere. United, by contrast, are much more direct than their rivals and look threatening every time they get the ball.
26' YOUNG IN THE WARS
Ashley Young is down, looking a little groggy. He appears to have taken a blow to the face, but is fine to continue after treatment.
24' RARE ARSENAL THREAT
Ramsey sneaks past Evra down the Arsenal right and delivers a cross that De Gea is forced to fist away at full stretch.
22' VAN PERSIE DENIED A SECOND
United look unstoppable whenever they break. Rooney feeds Van Persie again and the former Arsenal man stings the fingertips of Mannone with a powerful drive.
20' IN THE MOOD FOR MORE
Rooney and Van Persie link up well down the inside-left channel, but the Dutchman is driven wide and Arsenal have plenty of men back to snuff out the threat.
18' STAYING THE DISTANCE
One thing we can safely predict: whatever the score is at half-time there won't be many Gunners fans heading for the exits today after what happened at Reading in midweek.
15' MAN UTD BOOKING
Jack Wilshere is booked for a horrible late tackle on Tom Cleverley.
13' SLOW STARTERS
Arsenal have scored just once in the first 30 minutes of Premier League games this season, the poorest record of any club in the division. They could really do with a response here.
11' KICKING FOR TOUCH
Arsenal enjoy a rare spell of possession, but it comes to nothing as a shot from Santos from 25 yards ends up going out just inside the right-hand corner flag for a goal-kick.
8' HAPPY MEMORIES
Interviewed in the run-up to the match, Arsene Wenger had nothing but fond words to say regarding Robin van Persie's time at Arsenal. He said: “One of the important aspects as a manager is to have a positive influence on the careers and lives of your players. In this case I haven't done too badly.” Wonder what you're thinking now, Arsene?
6' KEEPING A LOW PROFILE
There was a muted celebration from Van Persie after his goal. He thought about not celebrating at all, but finally raised his arms to acknowledge the United fans.
4' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's the stuff of dreams for Van Persie. Rafael delivered an innocuous cross from the right, Vermaelen made a real mess of the clearance and the Dutchman lashed a first-time right-foot shot into the corner, giving Mannone no chance.
3' GOAL: MAN UTD 1 ARSENAL 0
ROBIN VAN PERSIE - who else - puts United in front!
2' HUGS ALL ROUND
Van Persie went down the entire Arsenal line before kick-off and gave a hug to every member of the Gunners' starting XI.
1' HERE WE GO
Arsenal get the game under way, attacking the Stretford End to our left.

0' PREVIEW
There was a time when matches involving Manchester United and Arsenal would likely feature the two teams most likely to claim the Premier League title in any given season. And while the rivalry may not have become quite so heated in recent times with United looking to Manchester City and Chelsea as their more serious rivals for silverware, few would argue that the visit of the Gunners to Old Trafford is still one of the most eagerly anticipated clashes of the season. This fixture has had it all over the years, several title deciders, two absolute hammerings, on-pitch brawls and even Arsene Wenger being banished to the main stand without a place to sit and standing, arms outstretched, looking like that huge statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooking Rio de Janeiro. If Arsene's boys fail to claim anything today it will take another miracle resurrection to get them back in the title race. United were impressive in winning at leaders Chelsea last Sunday and more than that, they were lucky too, getting the key decisions in a match of huge importance. Even though Arsenal's team will bear no resemblance to the one that won at Reading in midweek, that jaw-dropping comeback from four goals down to win 7-5 after extra time in the Capital One Cup must have given a boost to everyone at the club. Yes they go in against United as huge underdogs, but they should not lack the belief that they are capable of getting a result that would get their season right back on track. United conceded two or more goals six times in the whole of last season. They are just one short of that mark already this term with only nine games gone and their defence has looked vulnerable. Arsenal fans will be hoping for two things today: that they secure a famous victory or, failing that, manage a confidence-boosting draw, and that the name of former favourite Robin van Persie does not appear on the scoresheet for the home side. That would simply be too much to bear. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
All eyes will, of course, be on Robin van Persie, as the Dutchman makes his first start against his former club having departed the Emirates in the summer after eight years in North London. Van Persie has netted seven goals already in the league for United and is joint leading scorer in the Premier League with Newcastle's Demba Ba. “I don't know [what reception he'll get but] I hope it is a respectful one because he has played for us for eight years, he has done very well for us," Wenger told the official Arsenal website this week. “Saturday's game is not about Van Persie. Not for us and I don't think for him, as well. For us, what is important is the result at the end of the game, and the quality of our performance. We do not even talk about him.” Arsenal have blown hot and cold and much will depend on midfield maestro Santi Cazorla. The Spaniard was at the top of his game when they won at West Ham last month, but he was an anonymous figure in the Gunners' last away game at Norwich when they put in a pitiful display and suffered an embarrassing 1-0 defeat.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 77 wins to 67 by Arsenal and 42 games being drawn. At Old Trafford, United have 53 wins to 15 by the Gunners, with a further 25 meetings ending up all square. The last time these sides met was at the Emirates on Jan 22, United winning 2-1 to complete the double with goals coming from Antonio Valencia (45 mins) and Danny Welbeck (81), Robin van Persie (71) having levelled for the home side. United had famously hammered Arsenal 8-2 in the opening month of the season, with Wayne Rooney scoring a hat-trick and Ashley Young netting twice. Arsenal have failed to win on any of their last five league visits to Old Trafford, losing four and drawing the other, their last victory coming in September 2006 courtesy of a late strike from Emmanuel Adebayor.
0' FORM GUIDE
United start the weekend in second place, just a point behind Chelsea after their win at Stamford Bridge last weekend. Arsenal are in sixth place, a further six points off the pace with 15 points from their opening nine matches, two more than they had at the same stage last season. United have won their last three in the league since suffering a surprising 3-2 home defeat by Tottenham on Sep.29. Arsenal beat Queens Park Rangers at home last weekend but they have lost two of their last four and have only secured back-to-back victories once in the Premier League this season.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
United already knew they would be without captain Nemanja Vidic, but they suffered a blow on Friday with the news that the centre-back is not likely to return from a knee injury until after Christmas. Also missing are Chris Smalling (foot) and Phil Jones and Shinji Kagawa (both knee). Arsenal will give a late fitness test to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (hip). Leading scorer Gervinho is out for three weeks with an ankle problem and joins Kieran Gibbs (thigh), Wojciech Szczesny (ankle), Abou Diaby (thigh) and Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) on the sidelines.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mike Dean, who has been a FIFA official since 2002. The Cheshire-based referee has shown 15 yellow cards in his six Premier League games this season, well below his normal average. He dismissed five players last season, but none from either of these two sides. The last player from either United or Arsenal to see red at Dean's hands was Red Devils midfielder Paul Scholes in the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City at Wembley in April 2011. Dean has a reputation for being strict on misdemeanours in the penalty area and awarded more spot kicks last campaign than any other top-flight official. His assistants today are Scott Ledger and Andy Garratt, while Phil Dowd is the fourth official.
