Norwich City vs. Southampton
Minute Commentary
Norwich City claimed their first win of the Premier League season after inching to a 1-0 victory over Southampton at Carrow Road. In a hard-fought game in which momentum swung both ways, Nathan Redmond's stunning strike with 20 minutes to play was enough to give the hosts the win. Mauricio Pochettino's Southampton side had chances of their own - most notably when Adam Lallana rattled the woodwork in the first half - and will be disappointed that their endeavour and attractive build-up play hasn't stopped them from leaving Norfolk empty-handed.
And that's full-time at Carrow Road. Norwich City edge Southampton 1-0 in an entertaining encounter.
Surely that's a penalty?! Robert Snodgrass is wiped out inside the area by Jose Fonte and it looks like a certain spot kick but Howard Webb says no. Snodgrass is livid.
Norwich have possession deep into Southampton territory now, and have no intention of giving it up. This will be a very welcome hard-fought three points for Chris Hughton.
There will be four minutes of added time at Carrow Road, as Southampton continue to pound the Norwich penalty area. Can they find an equaliser?
Leroy Fer pulls Gaston Ramirez to the turf needlessly, giving Rickie Lambert an opportunity to shoot from 30 yards out. His strike is slammed straight into the Norwich defensive wall, though.
Norwich are always a danger on the break, too. Nathan Redmond is a particular threat, and his dribble clear ends in a shot which Artur Boruc has to save.
Remarkably, Southampton have not won any of the previous seven Premier League matches they have taken part in in which Howard Webb has refereed. That statistic looks set to extend today as the Saints struggle to break through this tenacious Norwich defence.
Time is running out for Southampton and they're not likely to get many more chances. Steven Davis has a shot from the edge of the area after Norwich can only half clear a James Ward-Prowse corner but he cuts across the ball and squirts his effort way wide.
That was close for Southampton! Rickie Lambert lobs a diagonal pass to Jay Rodriguez inside the penalty area but the striker is sandwiched in between Steven Whittaker and Sebastien Bassong, meaning he can't gather the ball in to get a shot away.
The home side are in total control at the minute, passing the ball around as if they have all the time in the world. Southampton make their final substitution, bringing off Pablo Osvaldo with Jay Rodriguez coming on.
Norwich City are also going to tinker with their team; it's Johan Elmander making way for Jonny Howson, meaning the Canaries are probably going to switch to a more orthodox 4-3-3 formation.
Southampton choose to make their second substitution, with Steven Davis coming on for Morgan Schneiderlin. It's an attacking move from Mauricio Pochettino, whose side need to find an equaliser in the last 20 minutes.
Since withdrawing Adam Lallana in favour of Gaston Ramirez, Mauricio Pochettino's visitors haven't been anywhere near as fluent with the ball. Should the Saints go on to lose this, questions will be asked of the decision to remove the bright Lallana.
What a goal from Nathan Redmond! He picks up the ball down the left wing and runs at the inexperienced right-back Calum Chambers, who backs off. That forces another youngster, James Ward-Prowse, to come across to cover but Redmond beats him too, coming inside and shooting with his right foot from 25 yards out. It's a rasping effort which beats Artur Boruc at the near post and gives the Canaries the lead.
It's in! Nathan Redmond scores!
What an effort! Rickie Lambert latches on to a chested-down ball from Pablo Osvaldo and unleashes a vicious volley which John Ruddy palms away. The assistant referee raises his flag for offside anyway, so it wouldn't have counted even if the England international had disturbed the back of the net.
Robert Snodgrass' crosses are paramount to Norwich's game plan but in this second half, his distribution has not been up to scratch. Chris Hughton may be tempted to turn to his bench soon.
Pablo Osvaldo is down on the turf and he's not happy with Norwich centre-back Michael Turner, believing he used an elbow in an aerial challenge. It certainly seemed that Turner caught the forward but the ex-Roma man may have to get used to such physicality in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Adam Lallana comes off for Southampton, with Gaston Ramirez coming on.
Johan Elmander nearly threads a fine pass through to Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who had made an intelligent run, but Dejan Lovren manages to stab behind for a corner. Just after, Elmander heads over from a Nathan Redmond cross. The scoreline may not reflect it so far, but this match has had a real pace and dynamism to it.
Artur Boruc does have a tendency to look shaky and that attribute shows itself again as he flaps at a Nathan Redmond cross, almost punching the ball straight to Ricky van Wolfswinkel. The Dutchman can't control it, though, and Southampton's defence can regroup to clear.
It's Norwich's turn to go close, and it's another set piece. Robert Snodgrass' delivery is pinpoint again but Leroy Fer's towering header bounces wide of Artur Boruc's left-hand post. This one could go either way.
Pablo Osvaldo is seeing plenty of the ball now. Morgan Schneiderlin is playing in a more advanced role today and has had lots of space early in this second period. He feeds Osvaldo who shifts the ball onto his left foot before getting a shot away, but John Ruddy can hold on to it this time.
Southampton nearly take the lead through Pablo Osvaldo! Calum Chambers and James Ward-Prowse link well down the right before Adam Lallana's cross finds Osvaldo in the middle. He controls the ball before caressing it towards the far post, but John Ruddy tips it behind for a corner.
There's a worry for Norwich straight away in the second half, as Johan Elmander slips on the pitch and appears to have injured himself. He manages to limp to the sidelines and is going to try and run it off.
We're back underway at Carrow Road, with neither Norwich or Southampton making any changes at the interval. Can either side find the cutting edge to break the deadlock in this second half?
Norwich City and Southampton have both enjoyed periods of superiority, but neither side have managed to find an opening goal in an entertaining first half. Each team has had one stand-out chance; the Canaries seeing a Leroy Fer stab at goal snuffed out by Artur Boruc while for the Saints, Adam Lallana's vicious volley cannoned off the upright. There's been two penalty shouts, too, with the hosts particularly lucky to be given a reprieve as Bradley Johnson appeared to handle a Lallana shot inside his own penalty area. An exciting match but the scoreline may reflect the fresh look of both clubs' attacking make-ups.
And that's half-time at Carrow Road. Norwich City and Southampton remain deadlocked at 0-0.
As they did in midweek against Bury in the Capital One Cup, Norwich are looking extremely vulnerable from set pieces. James Ward-Prowse's latest delivery is flicked on at the near post by Pablo Osvaldo but, fortunately for the hosts, no Southampton player is there at the back post to finish.
Southampton are playing some good stuff in the final third, despite their lack of chances. A chance does finally come, as James Ward-Prowse's free-kick is headed down by a Norwich defender but only as far as Adam Lallana on the edge of the box. His vicious volley strikes the frame of the goal and the ball bounces clear.
Ricky van Wolfswinkel finds himself in one-on-one with Artur Boruc after latching on to Johan Elmander's flick-on but the assistant referee has his flag raised for offside, much to the disbelief of the Dutch striker. Just after, Steven Whittaker whizzes a shot across the face of goal from the edge of the six-yard area.
That was a frenetic phase of play! Robert Snodgrass crosses from the right for Norwich and Ricky van Wolfswinkel's header is half-cleared. The rebound falls for Leroy Fer inside the penalty area but his goal-bound drive is also blocked by a number of despairing Saints defenders.
Norwich look their most threatening when the ball is out wide, with wingers Nathan Redmond and Robert Snodgrass. And while those two saw plenty of possession in the first 15 minutes, they have been starved of it ever since, allowing Southampton a way back into the match.
Pablo Osvaldo is determined to make his mark on his full debut for Southampton. Adam Lallana chips a cross from the byline towards the striker, who attempts a flamboyant overhead kick. Unfortunately for him, Michael Turner can nod the ball away before he makes contact.
Southampton are starting to find some form now. Pablo Osvaldo is slipped in behind the Norwich defence by Rickie Lambert but is flagged offside as John Ruddy smothers the ball at his feet.
Southampton have finally had a shot at John Ruddy in the Norwich goal - but Victor Wanyama's long-range drive is weak and misdirected, providing no threat to the Canaries' goal. Just after, the Saints want a penalty after Adam Lallana's strike appears to hit Bradley Johnson's hand. Howard Webb isn't interested but it probably should have been a spot kick.
How did that not go in?! A Robert Snodgrass free-kick is flicked on by Ricky van Wolfswinkel towards Leroy Fer on the edge of the six-yard area. The Dutchman tries to bundle the ball in but Artur Boruc spreads himself to block the shot before his defenders scramble it clear.
If the match continues to follow this pattern, it can't be long before Norwich take the lead. Javier Garrido gets found in acres of space down the left and his cross into a crowded area is a good one. However, neither Ricky van Wolfswinkel or his other team mates can direct the ball towards goal.
Norwich have dominated both possession and territory so far, with Southampton's attacking duo of Rickie Lambert and Pablo Osvaldo seeing hardly any of the ball. Another spell of Canaries passing ends when Bradley Johnson lines up a long range effort but he pulls his shot wide as he's off balance.
Southampton are putting in some rather robust challenges and the latest, from Danny Fox on Robert Snodgrass, prompts Howard Webb to give the hosts a free-kick in the final third. The Scottish winger takes the set piece but his low drive is cleared at the near post.
And that's the first chance of the game. What an effort by Nathan Redmond! He steals possession from James Ward-Prowse before sprinting past two Southampton defenders and cutting in from his left-wing berth. He gets a shot away with his right foot from the edge of the penalty area but the ball whizzes just past the near post.
Norwich have started this match on the front foot, with Johan Elmander operating just behind the dominating figure of Ricky van Wolfswinkel up front and not alongside him, as had been mooted.
We're up and running at Carrow Road, with Howard Webb's blow of the whistle signalling the start of the game. Will it be Norwich City or Southampton who thrive in the East Anglia sunshine?
Norwich City hand a first Premier League start to on-loan striker Johan Elmander who will partner Ricky van Wolfswinkel in attack. Skipper Sebastien Bassong is also back in the Canaries starting XI at the expense of Russell Martin who drops to the bench. Southampton hand a first start to £15million man Pablo Osvaldo, with Jay Rodriguez dropping to the substitutes bench. Also having to make do for a place among the replacements is Luke Shaw, whose left-back berth is taken by Danny Fox.
Referee Howard Webb will take charge of this afternoon's match at Carrow Road. Webb has had Premier League assignments in both of the first two weeks of the season, most recently Arsenal's 3-1 win over Fulham last weekend, during which he handed out four yellow cards. He'll be assisted by Mike Mullarkey and Peter Bankes.
Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino said: "[Norwich] have reinforced their squad very well, so we're expecting a very tough game against them. They're physically a very strong side and a very quick side. They go on the counter-attack very quickly as well, which is one of their main strengths. They're very well-organised, and they know exactly what they need to do in every single moment of the game, so overall they're a very tough side playing against them away from home."
Norwich manager Chris Hughton said: "[Southampton] have a wonderful blend between youth and experience and they seem to have a vision of how they want the club to improve. You know they have a lot of good offensive options and in the manner they play they are a threat for any team. To me they have the same philosophy whether they play home or away."
Norwich haven't enjoyed playing Southampton in recent years, having not beaten the Saints in their last seven attempts. Since 1994, the Canaries have won just three of nine meetings between the sides at Carrow Road, with their most recent taste of victory coming in August 2007 as a Jamie Cureton double helped them to a 2-1 win. The corresponding fixture last season ended 0-0, with Grant Holt missing a penalty kick late into added time.
No player definitely misses the match for Southampton, but the Saints must deal with a number of niggling injuries in the run-up to the trip north-east. The most serious of those knocks is to influential midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, who wasn't involved in the midweek victory over Barnsley. Also doubtful are winger Guly do Prado and defender Jos Hooiveld, though neither player is expected to start the match, should they prove their fitness. Rickie Lambert, who netted a 95th minute penalty kick to give the Saints a victory at West Brom last weekend, will lead the line.
Norwich will once again be without summer signing Gary Hooper, who is still suffering from the shin injury he picked up during pre-season preparations. Defender Ryan Bennett needed stitches to a knee gash picked up in midweek and is a doubt, but Sebastien Bassong could be in contention to challenge for a place in the starting XI. Winger Elliott Bennett is out until next year but Johan Elmander will be pushing for a starting place after scoring twice and putting in an accomplished performance on Tuesday night.
Norwich City welcome Southampton to Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon, with both teams hoping to use big wins in the Capital One Cup as springboards to their season. The Canaries beat Bury in a nine-goal thriller while Southampton put five past Championship side Barnsley, as fringe players from both teams mounted their claim for first choice selection. However both Chris Hughton and Mauricio Pochettino have spent big this summer and will surely be keen for their big signings - the likes of Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Pablo Osvaldo - to find form in the early months if their respective Premier League campaigns are to prove to be successful.
