Liverpool vs. Crystal Palace
Minute Commentary
90' LIVERPOOL WALK ON
Brilliant in the first half, Liverpool conformed to type in the second period by once again failing to net after half-time for the sixth time in seven games. They will care not one jot though, having returned to the summit of the league. With all the damage done in the first half - through a scrambled shot from Luis Suarez, a glorious goal from a jinking Daniel Sturridge down the left, and a penalty from Steven Gerrard - the second half saw Crystal Palace play tighter and more aggressively to prevent the rout that seemed inevitable after 45 minutes. They even managed to score too, with Jose Campana's cross being met by Dwight Gayle in the six yard box for his second of the season. In reality though, the home side took their foot off the gas and were unable or perhaps just unwilling to take it back up a gear after this response, and the game petered out. Crystal Palace look set for a long fight against relegation even at this early stage; Liverpool, though, march on. Thank you for joining me here at Anfield.
90' FULL-TIME
The stands had already started to empty here and it's been confirmed that the early leavers won't be missing any more goals. It's all over at Anfield and Liverpool return to the top of the league - for 24 hours at least.
90' YANNICK BOLASIE LOOKING DANGEROUS
Yannick Bolasie is making his way back from injury today and he's been looking eager to get involved. He skips past Daniel Agger with a surge of pace and gets a low cross in that's cleared by Kolo Toure.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
Four minutes of stoppage time here and things look like they're winding down...
87' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION - STURRIDGE OFF
Final change of the afternoon for Liverpool. Iago Aspas is coming on in place of Daniel Sturridge. He hasn't been quite as bright this second half but had a terrific first, including scoring his sixth league goal of the season. More impressively it was his 14th strike in 14 games for the Reds.
85' DANIEL STURRIDGE HITS POST
Daniel Sturridge close to making it 4-1! It's that Suarez/Sturridge combination again as the former crosses the ball in from the byline on the left to his partner. A right footed volley from Sturridge cannons off the right post.
84' JULIAN SPERONI QUICK FEET
Nice footwork from Julian Speroni there as a short back pass from Mariappa leaves him under pressure from Luis Suarez. The stopper jinks his way past the striker though to avoid danger.
81' ANFIELD ANXIOUS
Anfield sounds anxious now at 3-1 and Liverpool have stepped up the intensity again. Daniel Sturridge has the ball deep down the left and chips it into Luis Suarez. The striker attempts an acrobatic overhead kick but makes more contact with Mile Jedinak than the ball - the Australian is pretty angry at that.
76' POOR LIVERPOOL MARKING LEADS TO GOAL
Liverpool gave Dwight Gayle far too much space there and his header was pretty much unchallenged. It's Gayle's second of the season following his club record transfer move from Peterborough to Palace in the summer.
75' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Jose Campana takes a free kick from right out wide down by the byline on the left. His right-footed curler is flicked in by Dwight Gayle at the near post.
73' LUIS SUAREZ IN TROUBLE
Luis Suarez is being given a talking to by referee Anthony Taylor and he looks unhappy about it. The striker collided with Dean Moxey chasing the ball and the Palace defender has gone down. It looked like a 50-50 contest from here, but it's Moxey who's come off worse and Suarez is reprimanded while his opponent receives treatment on the pitch.
71' CRYSTAL PALACE DROPPING DEEP
Liverpool have had 62% of the play but they've not been terribly effective with it in this second period. Crystal Palace have dropped very deep this half and it's proving hard to break them down. They finally manage to cut through with Jose Enrique but as the ball comes into Daniel Sturridge he can't quite get it out from under his feet, before being crowded out.
68' CRYSTAL PALACE SUBSTITUTION
With Dwight Gayle sending the ball out of play with a high drive that's nowhere near the target, Crystal Palace make their final change. Yannick Bolasie comes onto the field, replacing Marouane Chamakh.
67' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTIONS
It's the first substitutions of the afternoon for Liverpool, with Luis Alberto coming on for Victor Moses. It's been a solid day's work for Moses, without reaching the heights of Suarez and Sturridge ahead of him. Meanwhile, Daniel Agger is on for Mamadou Sakho. He's returning from injury after dropping a dumbbell on his foot.
65' RAHEEM STERLING
Almost as if reading me, Raheem Sterling bursts down the right and manages to test Julian Speroni with a low drive to his near post. The Palace is keeper is par to it though and makes a comfortable save.
63' LIVERPOOL A ONE HALF TEAM?
Until last weekend, Liverpool hadn't scored a single second half goal in the Premier League this season. They seem keen to prove they can keep the intensity up over 90 minutes here, but even so they aren't quite showing the fluidity of play that they did in the first period.
60' LIVERPOOL PRESSURE
Liverpool come forward and Steven Gerrard finds Raheem Sterling down by the right byline. He puts the ball into Luis Suaraz on the six yard box. The Uruguayan tries to to turn but has to make do with a corner. Gerrard's corner finds Suarez again and Liverpool attempt to work the ball into the area from the edge of the box but the danger is snuffed out.
57' VICTOR MOSES MISTAKE
Liverpool playing some keep ball in their own half, stroking it around. They're complacent though and Victor Moses is muscled off the ball by O'Keefe. Liverpool are back so quickly however and the visitors' attempt to counter is snuffed out quickly by Sakho.
54' CRYSTAL PALACE NOT GIVING IN
Crystal Palace have their third corner of the game. Jose Campana's ball from the left is cleared but Palace are enjoying a spell in the Liverpool half here.
49' LUIS SUAREZ WORKING HARD
Suarez is working incredibly hard. He wins a tussle for the ball just inside the Liverpool half on their left and sets off down the wing, taking three players with him. He pulls the trigger from close to the byline but his shot's blocked.
47' NO LET UP FROM LIVERPOOL
Raheem Sterling finds Daniel Sturridge down the right who holds up the ball on the edge of the penalty area until Sterling calls for the return. The cross comes teasingly in and Speroni has to scramble to get a hold of it.
46' WE'RE UNDER WAY
Crystal Palace were out having a team huddle before the second-half kick off but it's a pep talk that's almost certainly come too late for them as we get under way again. Ian Holloway's made two changes: Dwight Gayle and Jose Campana have come on, with Cameron Jerome and Jimmy Kebe making way.
45' HALF-TIME SUMMARY
It has all been far too easy for a rampant looking Liverpool side. Two goals within three minutes of each other effectively made sure of the result and, though Crystal Palace have tried to keep in the contest, the question really is how much the home side will ease up in the second period. Luis Suarez gave the Reds the lead, managing to squeeze a right footed shot through a wall of bodies in the area, despite slipping. He was then joined on the scoresheet by strike partner Daniel Sturridge, who turned Damien Delaney inside and out before firing low across Speroni's goal. The visitors then enjoyed a bright spell but were undone when Dean Moxey brought Raheem Sterling down in the penalty area, with Steven Gerrard slotting home the penalty. The understanding between Suarez and Sturridge has been phenomenal, while Jose Enqrique has enjoyed acres of space down the left to fire in balls that have almost always caused danger. If Liverpool opt to keep this up in the second half then a repeat of that 9-0 scoreline from 24 years ago might not be as far fetched as I'd thought before kick-off.
45' HALF-TIME
There's no let up from Liverpool and first Daniel Sturridge and then Luis Suarez have efforts saved. Suarez' is perhaps the better chance, taking a deflection in the area and taking his time to fire in from 15 yards. Speroni is equal to it and sends it out for a corner that never comes - it's half-time here.
42' CRYSTAL PALACE LOOK BEATEN ALREADY
Crystal Palace trying to muster what already looks to be a consolation. They've been restricted to long range efforts though and, after Jason Puncheon's shot is blocked, Mile Jedinak sends a horrible drive a long way wide. The sun's come out but Palace are in a very dark place indeed.
37' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Steven Gerrard makes no mistake with the penalty for his first goal in 14 games. That also puts him on a tantalising 99 Premier League goals.
37' PENALTY LIVERPOOL!
Penalty! Suarez and Sterling link up on the right and Dean Moxey hauls down the latter in the area as he looks to take down the Uruguayan's return.
34' STURRIDGE AND SUAREZ IN TANDEM
More beautiful link up play between Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez almost sees the Uruguayan in as his strike partner drags a Palace defender out to the left of the penalty area and flicks a cheeky back heel into his path. A desperate challenge comes in from Delaney and Palace survive.
30' END TO END
Palace continue their assault and gain a corner from Cameron Jerome's cross. It's cleared by Liverpool though and Luis Suarez breaks up the left, whipping a ball in that's forced out for a corner of their own.
26' PALACE WITH ANOTHER CHANCE!
They go close soon after too as another shot from Cameron Jerome takes a deflection off Kebe, almost wrong footing Mignolet, who makes a brilliant reaction save. That's two extremely good chances gone.
25' CRYSTAL PALACE GO CLOSE
A bright spell for Crystal Palace as they attack, and Sakho has to be alert to prevent Jason Puncheon from getting in on the right of the penalty area. They come back though and Jimmy Kebe is through down the right with just Mignolet to beat! His shot is saved by the keeper and hacked away by Skrtel.
23' JOSE ENRIQUE DICTATING PLAY
Jose Enrique is getting so much space down this left side and has been looking for Luis Suarez every time. The Palace defence are looking incredibly nervous at the pace of this Liverpool attack, but if they don't close down Jose Enrique at the source then they're going to have to face much, much more of it.
19' LIVERPOOL ALMOST MAKE IT THREE
That's almost three for Liverpool as Suarez let's Jose Enrique's ball run through to Sturridge. Sturridge returns with his first touch and the Uruguayan is clear. He whips the ball across goal towards his forward partner, but Delaney desperately squeezes it out for a corner. Sturridge goes down in the collision and looks in pain, but he's back on the field quickly as the corner comes to nothing.
16' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Daniel Sturridge doubles the lead with his left foot. He picks the ball up outside the area on the left and surges towards Damien Delaney. The poor Palace defender is turned inside and out as Sturridge reaches the penalty area, before the confident striker thumps the ball across Speroni and into the right corner of the goal. Maybe 9-0 isn't so fanciful?
14' LUIS SUAREZ THIRD OF THE SEASON
That's Luis Suarez' third in two games since his return, he seems to have picked up where he left off last season. As he took the ball in the box, his first touch took it slightly away from him and, with several Palace defenders surrounding him, the chance looked to have gone. However, slipping as he stretched, the Uruguayan managed to get good contact with his right foot and nestled the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.
13' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Luis Suarez manages to squeeze the ball through a maze of bodies and past Julian Speroni to break the deadlock.
10' VICTOR MOSES CHANCE
What a brilliant cross from Jose Enrique on the left hand side with his first touch. The ball curls in low across the Palace area towards Victor Moses, and the forward is kicking himself after an abysmal first touch. It came in quickly to the youngster, but he had the time to bring it under control and get a shot in there.
9' STUART O'KEEFE BOOKED
Mamadou Sakho's gone down from a late challenge under Stuart O'Keefe and the Palace midfielder picks up the first booking of the afternoon. He can't have many complaints about that.
8' CRYSTAL PALACE BREAK
All of a sudden Crystal Palace make a break through Jimmy Kebe down the right. He's got plenty of space to chip a cross in onto the head of Cameron Jerome who really should've hit the target with his head. As it is it drifts wide of the right post. Quick counter there from the away side.
6' LIVERPOOL CORNER
Free kick for Liverpool level with the left of the penalty area 35 yards out. It's whipped in by captain Steven Gerrard towards Martin Skrtel but it's out for a corner. From the resulting cross, a shot from Gerrard is blocked.
3' EARLY LIVERPOOL PRESSURE
An early exchange between Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard on the edge of the Crystal Palace penalty area almost sets Luis Suarez free but the ball doesn't get through to him. Palace can expect plenty more of that this afternoon.
1' WE'RE UNDER WAY
We're under way! Palace wearing their change dark blue strip, get things going and are playing left to right.
0' LIVERPOOL PLAYING 3-5-2
It's grey but dry here in Liverpool as the players emerge from the tunnel. It's worth pointing out that the home team are going for a 3-5-2 formation, with Raheem Sterling joining Jose Enrique on wing-back duties. That's an interesting call by Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers; the teenager has impressed with his attacking nous over the past season and a bit, but his defensive capabilities are somewhat raw. Palace may well target that left side.
0' TEAM NEWS REACTION
It's Raheem Sterling who comes in for the suspended Lucas, in the only change for Liverpool from the side who beat Sunderland 3-1 last weekend at the Stadium of Light. Crystal Palace look to have opted for an attack-minded 4-4-2, which suggests Ian Holloway hasn't forgotten when his Blackpool side of 2010 took it to the Reds and came away with a shock away win during their sole season in the Premier League. Damien Delaney returns as expected, and he's joined by Stuart O'Keefe, Jason Puncheon and Cameron Jerome as changes to the side that lost to Southampton last weekend.
0' CRYSTAL PALACE TEAM
Julian Speroni, Joel Ward, Adrian Mariappa, Damien Delaney, Dean Moxey, Mile Jedinak, Stuart O'Keefe, Jason Puncheon, Jimmy Kebe, Cameron Jerome, Marouane Chamakh. SUBSTITUTES: Lewis Price, Ryan Inniss, Jose Campana, Adlene Guedioura, Yannick Bolasie, Dwight Gayle, Kevin Phillips.
0' LIVERPOOL TEAM
Simon Mignolet, Kolo Toure, Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho, Jose Enrique, Jordan Henderson, Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling, Luis Suarez, Victor Moses, Daniel Sturridge. SUBSTITUTES: Brad Jones, Jordan Ibe, Andre Wisdom, Daniel Agger, Iago Aspas, Tiago Ilori, Luis Alberto.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
For Liverpool, midfielder Lucas is suspended after amassing five yellow cards, which means that Jordan Henderson could move into the centre, which would mean one of three from Raheem Sterling, Iago Aspas or Luis Alberto coming in on the right. Somewhat mischievously, Ian Holloway has refused to name the two key players he's supposedly missing through injury, but he is expected to give winger Yannick Bolasie his first game of the season, while Damien Delaney is also set to return from an ankle problem.
0' HARD AFTERNOON AHEAD FOR PALACE?
Crystal Palace have found the going tough so far this season, their only victory so far coming at home to a Sunderland side in turmoil, on the last day of August. Aside from that they've suffered five defeats and languish in 19th position in the table, as boss Ian Holloway struggles to gel the 12 summer signings that feature in his league squad of 25. Summing up their 2-0 loss at Southamption last weekend, Holloway said: "We need to dig in and find ourselves. I won't keep them [Palace] up if we keep making mistakes. We need to be more clinical and stop making errors." There aren't many grounds where you could be punished more severely for any lapses at the moment than Anfield.
0' DALGLISH BACK: CAN LIVERPOOL ROLL BACK THE YEARS ON THE PITCH TOO?
The recent news is that Kenny Dalglish has joined the board at Liverpool and, though the players' demographic is somewhat different from his heyday, the Reds start to the season is certainly reminiscent of their Dalglish-featuring sides of the 70's and 80's. A defeat at home to Southampton apart, the Merseysiders have picked up four wins and a draw from their other five games. Luis Suarez returned to the side away to Sunderland last week, after his biting ban, and scored twice in their 3-1 victory. Daniel Sturridge also scored on Wearside to up his tally to five in the league this season. He's scored eight of Liverpool's last 12 league goals.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
Welcome to Anfield! 24 years ago, Crystal Palace handed Liverpool their biggest top-flight victory in the club's history, going down 9-0 in this fixture. It's extremely unlikely that the Londoners will be on the end of a similar drubbing this afternoon, but you have to go back to November 1991 for the last and only time the visitors have won in the league at Anfield. However, Palace have won three of their last four games against Liverpool if you take cup competitions into account; more sobering for the travelling support is the knowledge that their team is winless in 16 Premier League away games, dating back to October 2004.
