West Bromwich Albion vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
The spoils were shared in this match, and that's probably a fair result, although West Brom will feel that they had the better chances and should have won this. But before the game they'd probably have happily accepted a draw against an in-form Arsenal team which had won its last eight away Premier League matches. In the first half although the visitors had the bulk of the possession the home defence restricted them to a few half-chances only, whilst themselves creating a succession of much better opportunities. In a period of sustained Baggies pressure late in the first half, the home team took the lead through a near post header from Yacob and easily deserved their lead. The second half was frantic and end-to-end, with both teams attacking at every opportunity, but again West Brom had the better goalscoring opportunities, with Anelka missing two gilt-edged chances. It was somewhat against the run of play that Wilshere levelled the scores with a low shot from outside the area, but despite a few other near misses neither team could score the vital winner, in this highly entertaining match. Arsenal go back to the top of the table, albeit only on number of goals scored, but West Brom will be the happier team after this sterling performance, brimming with confidence.
The referee's assistant hold up the board showing four minutes of time added on.
Flamini's shot is weak and can't beat Myhill, and Steve Clarke makes his final substitution, bringing on Chris Brunt in place of Amalfitano. Just one goal now will win this match.
Wenger changes his striker, with Nicklas Bendtner replacing Giroud up front.
Arsenal are keeping possession in midfield, probing for a way through the home defence. But when their attack breaks down West Brom attack forward, but in fewer numbers than previously. The game is not as frantic as it was ten minutes ago – perhaps both teams are now just as anxious not to lose this at they are to win it.
West Brom's standout player, Sessegnon, is replaced by James Morrison. Let's see if he can open the doors of Arsenal's defence.
Giroud finds himself through with a one-on-one with the keeper, but Myhill gets down brilliantly to deny him. Both sides are attacking with all they have, with goalmouth action at both ends.
Long send a nice ball forward to Amalfitano, who tries to turn his defender and wins a corner. That's cleared, but West Brom are still pressing for a second goal at every opportunity.
Arsenal attack and a neat dinked chip from Ozil to Giroud is sent well wide. The Arsenal striker was waiting for an offside flag that never came so hit a half-hearted effort.
Steve Clarke takes Anelka off and replaces him with Shane Long. No great surprise as Anelka has wasted two great chances to extend his team's lead.
West Brom are attacking again and getting numerous balls into the Arsenal box. Ridgewell has the latest effort, but it's easily cleared. The home team are having most of the possession and must be kicking themselves to have conceded that equaliser.
Against the run of play, Ozil takes the ball forward, and crosses to Rosicky who lays it back for Wilshere to hit it low and hard into the bottom right hand corner of the home net for Arsenal's equaliser.
The Arsenal fans want a penalty for handball, but that isn't given, and the ball pinballs around the West Brom area for a short while until launched over the bar by Tomas Rosicky, who's just come off the bench for Arsenal, replacing Ramsey.
From a free kick by the touchline, the ball eventually falls to Berahino on the edge of the Arsenal area. His tame shot is easily saved, but Szczesny's clearance goes straight into the arms of West Brom keeper Myhill.
Sessegnon probes down the Arsenal left, and the ball is forced out for a West Brom corner. Szczesny punches clear but the ball is soon back in the Arsenal area, although Sessegnon can't stay on his feet and the attack breaks down. West Brom are soon back on the attack, though, and Anelka finds himself clear but slides the ball past the far post with just the keeper to beat. Another superb chance wasted – that really should have been two.
At the other end, Wilshere shoots wide from just inside the area. This is end to end stuff, but so far the home team have forced the better chances.
A superb run from Berahino results in a cross straight to Anelka's feet five yards from goal, but he stumbles and wastes a glorious chance for the Baggies to double their lead.
Arsenal kick off for the second half. Now's the time to see if they have the character to force their way back into this game and strengthen their title credentials.
The home fans are in fine voice as their team goes into the break one goal ahead. In a fine defensive performance the Baggies have denied Arsenal any real chances, and as the game has gone on they've grown in confidence and attacked in greater and greater numbers. In a purple patch in the last ten minutes of the half, they had great possession and Arsenal found themselves with their backs to the wall. It was no surprise when West Brom took the lead, through a fine near post header after a superb cross from the right from Amalfitano. This game is set up nicely, and the onus is now on the visitors to turn possession into worthwhile chances and goals, but they've shown little signs of doing that so far.
Wilshire is booked for a late tackle on the edge of the West Brom box. That's Arsenal's second yellow of the match – after Flamini was booked midway through the half.
It's all West Brom now, with Arsenal defending desperately and happy to clear the ball anywhere. A fine attacking show from the home team as we go into the three minutes of added on time.
West Brom have been applying real pressure and Yacob meets a fine cross from Amalfitano at the near post and heads home. No more than they've deserved.
Following an Arsenal corner, the ball is fired in hard and low by Ramsey from outside the area, but Myhill is equal to the task and saves well despite the crowd of players in the box.
A fine 40-yard pass to Sessagnon leads to West Brom's third corner. But they can't beat the Arsenal defence and Amalfitano's delivery is headed well clear.
Sessegnon darts between two players on the edge of the Arsenal area and ends up on the deck. He appeals for a penalty but referee Mason isn't interested.
Half an hour gone and although it's an open game it's still nil-nil. Although both sides have had chances none have been easy and the only serious save so far has come from Szczesny in the Arsenal goal, to keep out a wickedly deflected shot from Berahino.
Arsenal play a succession of quick passes to get into the home area, and Jones puts the ball out for a corner. That comes to naught as it's easily cleared by West Brom.
West Brom aren't sitting back – they're breaking whenever they can, especially using the pace and presence of Sessegnon. But so far they haven't committed men forward in numbers – they're obviously aware that Arsenal are always on the lookout to break themselves.
A cross from Ridgewell goes over Szczesny and Gibbs puts it out for a corner. That breaks down, and Arsenal flood forward in numbers but again can't break through despite good possession in and around the home area.
Ozil plays a lovely diagonal pass to Gibbs running into the Baggeis area, but the left back misses the target.
A speculative shot from Berahino from just outside the Arsenal area is deflected off Jenkinson, and Szczesny does well to get his fingertips to the ball at full stretch and push it wide. That was the closest we've come to a goal so far.
Yacob gives away a free kick to Arsenal ten yards outside the Baggies area. Ramsey takes the kick but the shot is well wide and far too high.
A shot from Arteta from well outside the box is deflected wide. Neither goalkeeper has been troubled so far.
The home team are defending in numbers, in two lines of four and three outside the edge of the box. Arsenal are passing the ball around nicely but can't find a way through so far.
West Brom win the first corner of the game, as Ridgewell breaks in space down the left. The corner is cleared easily and Arsenal break quickly, but West Brom soon regain possession. A cagey start as both teams look for openings.
Both teams are set up to play 4-2-3-1 this afternoon, so we should see plenty of attacking. Arsenal have the first attack but the ball is soon in the arms of keeper Myhill.
Referee Lee Mason blows his whistle and West Brom kick-off. Both sides should be brimming with confidence, with the Baggies looking to build on their win at Old Trafford last week, and the visitors are going for a ninth straight away Premier League win and a return to the top of the table.
Wojciech Szczesny, Carl Jenkinson, Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Kieran Gibbs, Mathieu Flamini, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey, Olivier Giroud, Mesut Ozil. Substitutes: Lukasz Fabianski, Nacho Monreal, Thomas Vermaelen, Tomas Rosicky, Serge Gnabry, Ryo Miyaichi, Nicklas Bendtner.
Boaz Myhill, Billy Jones, Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson, Liam Ridgewell, Claudio Yacob, Youssouf Mulumbu, Morgan Amalfitano, Stephane Sessegnon, Saido Berahino, Nicolas Anelka. Substitutes:Luke Daniels, Goran Popov, James Morrison, Chris Brunt, Diego Lugano, Shane Long, Markus Rosenberg.
Taking charge of this afternoon's match will be Lee Mason. Mason has shown four yellow yards in each of his three Premier League matches so far this season, and just a single red card – the result of a second yellow card for a late tackle by West Ham's Mark Noble in their home defeat to Everton a fortnight ago.
The most recent meeting between these two teams was the only match in Arsenal's last ten that they didn't win over 90 minutes, as a largely reserve team triumphed 4-3 on penalties at the Hawthorns last month in the Capital One Cup. Over recent Premier League meetings, the record is particularly one-sided, with Arsenal winning eight and drawing one of the last nine meetings, and you need to go back to April 2006 to find the last West Brom victory. However, despite losing their last four home Premier League matches against Arsenal, the Baggies have scored in each of them so there may still be something for home fans to cheer about.
After being booed off the pitch in their first match of the season, a home defeat to Aston Villa, Arsenal's season has been turned around and a win this afternoon will send them back to the top of the Premier League table. The arrival of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid has revitalised them, adding a new subtlety and depth to their play, and they approach this match with nine wins out of ten and brimming with confidence. Manager Arsene Wenger's only forced change comes through the loss of Bacary Sagna through a hamstring injury suffered in Tuesday's Champions League victory over Napoli. Carl Jenkinson is likely to replace him in defence.
The Baggies have only one win at home this season, against bottom club Sunderland in the match that sealed Paolo di Canio's fate. However their season has been buoyed by last week's 2-1 away victory over Manchester United, so confidence will be high as they look to beat another of the “Big Five” Manager Steve Clarke is likely to employ the same tactics used so successfully at Old Trafford but are suffering something of a striking crisis, with Victor Anichebe, Nicolas Anelka and Shane Long all likely to miss out. This may give an opportunity for Saido Berahino, scorer of last week's winner, to start for the first time this season.
This afternoon we're at the Hawthorns, Birmingham to watch West Bromwich Albion host Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League. Kick-off is at 16:00 BST, so join me, Jon Keen, shortly before then when we'll have all the latest news, line-ups, and live text commentary.
