Crystal Palace vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' FT: PALACE 0 ARSENAL 2
Ten man Arsenal extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points, though Liverpool can trim that back to two with a win over West Brom later in the day. Struggling Palace made the Gunners fight all the way and turned in just the sort of display their caretaker manager Keith Millen would have been proud of. The all-important goal came from the penalty spot on 47 minutes and will have been tough for the home side to stomach, as all their first half toil was undone by an ill-judged lunging tackle in the box by Adlene Guedioura on Serge Gnabry. Mikel Arteta made no mistake from the spot. Arteta turned from hero to villain midway through the second half when he was harshly dismissed after hauling down Maroune Chamakh 45 yards from goal. Referee Chris Foy deemed it to be a professional foul. Arsene Wenger and many others, your commentator included, will disagree. Palace pushed on with their numerical advantage and could easily have snatched a point, but Wojciech Szczesny made two quite outstanding saves to deny first Joel Ward and then Mile Jedinak. The visitors made sure of the points at the death when Olivier Giroud headed home from close range after excellent work by Aaron Ramsey in the build-up.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
We are into four minutes of added time. Palace can hold their heads up today. They have battled manfully.
89' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a great goal from the visitors. Ramsey surged forward, held up the ball intelligently and lofted a superb pass on to the head of Giroud, who nodded home from close range.
88' GOAL: PALACE 0 ARSENAL 2
Olivier Giroud makes sure of the points for Arsenal.
87' OZIL FLUFFS HIS CHANCE
Arsenal launch a swift counter-attack down the left. Ramsey feeds Monreal and his cross picks up the unmarked Ozil, who makes a hash of his volley with only the goalkeeper to beat.
85' LIVING DANGEROUSLY
A lofted ball by Jedinak almost puts in Chamakh, but Koscielny manages to smuggle the ball to safety just as the Moroccan was ready to shoot for goal.
83' MONREAL SHOT BLOCKED
Monreal goes on a weaving run in from the left touchline and his right-foot shot hits Delaney on the back before being cleared.
81' ATTACK AGAINST DEFENCE
Arsenal appear done as an attacking force. Giroud is up front on his own and everyone else is lining up to repel Palace's increasingly frequent raids.
78' PALACE SUBSTITUTION
Palace make another change as Bannan is replaced by Dwight Gayle.
76' BRILLIANT SAVES FROM SZCZESNY
Szezcesny makes two brilliant saves in quick succession to deny first Ward and then Jedinak from netting with thumping long-range efforts. The first shot from the full-back ended up hitting the top of the bar, but the second save was even better.
73' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Nacho Monreal replaces Santi Cazorla for Arsenal as Wenger looks to shut up shop.
71' PALACE SUBSTITUTION
Adlene Guedioura has gone down with cramp on the halfway line. He might need to come off. Jimmy Kebe is his replacement.
70' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Arsene Wenger decides he needs to make a switch, with Jack Wilshere replacing the first-half substitute, Gnabry.
69' TOUGH TIME FOR FOY
It's easy to see why Chris Foy rarely gives red cards. That's two in 38 matches, both of which have been highly contentious.
66' ARSENAL RED CARD
Arteta hauls down Chamakh wide on the right. Mr Foy deems him to be the last man and produces a red card even though he was some distance away from goal. That was harsh in my opinion.
63' STILL ALL TO PLAY FOR
Palace have drawn inspiration from the substitution and you feel Arsenal might need a second goal to dampen the home side's enthusiasm for the fight.
60' FINE RUN FROM BOLASIE
Bolasie is in the thick of the action immediately. He skips past the lumbering Mertesacker before Sagna halts his good run down the left.
58' PALACE SUBSTITUTION
Yannick Bolasie replaces Jerome Thomas for Palace.
57' PROMISING FROM PALACE
Palace break swiftly, but Moxey is driven wide and although he manages a shot on target from a narrow angle, that is catching practice for Szczesny.
56' KEEP PLUGGING AWAY
Palace may ultimately not take anything from this game, but they cannot let their heads go down as happened against Fulham on Monday.
54' GIROUD HEADS WIDE
A cross from the right by Sagna picks out the unmarked Giroud, who heads wide from close in. His only excuse can be losing the ball in the wind, because that was a dreadful effort.
51' SO CLOSE TO A SECOND
Arsenal almost have a second. Delaney's attempted clearance deflects goalwards off the shin of Gnabry and is a whisker wide of the post.
50' WHAT A LETDOWN
That's galling for Palace. To work so hard and then be undone by such a reckless lunge from Guedioura. He's let his team-mates down there, the Algerian.
48' GOAL: PALACE 0 ARSENAL 1
Mikel Arteta scores from the spot, netting into the corner past Speroni's flailing right hand.
47' ARSENAL PENALTY
Arsenal do have a penalty here as Serge Gnabry is tripped by Adlene Guedioura. No complaints.
46' SO, WAS IT A PENALTY?
Looking again at half-time at Arsenal's claims for a penalty, it was so close you could argue either way. Probably the sort of decision you get at the Emirates, but not away from home.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Palace get the second half under way.
45' HT: PALACE 0 ARSENAL 0
It's goalless at the break and Palace will be by far the happier as they have given a very good account of themselves in the first 45 minutes. Arsenal started promisingly, dominating possession but creating very little. As the half wore on the home side grew in confidence and Marouane Chamakh and Adelene Guedioura both had efforts saved by Wojciech Szczesny. Chamakh also failed to connect with a free header after perhaps misjudging the flight of the ball because of the wind. The closest Arsenal have come was a fierce drive by Aaron Ramsey from a narrow angle that was beaten away by Julian Speroni.
45' TAME EFFORT FROM GIROUD
Giroud brings down a cross from the left impressively, but volleys into the ground and his tame effort is gathered easily by Speroni.
42' GLORIOUS OPENING GOES BEGGING
Jedinak's cross from the left is just over the head of the unmarked Chamakh. Arsenal's marking was non-existent there.
41' CLOSE TO A PENALTY
Gnabry goes down right on the edge of the box after a lunging tackle from Delaney. That was inches away from being an Arsenal penalty.
39' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
A scare for Arsenal. Szczesny fails to deal with Bannan's right-wing corner but Dikgacoi heads wide under pressure. At the other end, Ramsey stings the hands of Speroni with a fierce shot from a narrow angle.
36' INCHES AWAY
Arsenal go close after Dikgacoi gives the ball away. Cazorla's cross-shot is fired across the face of goal with Giroud unable to apply the final touch. A pull-back to Ramsey there might have been the better option.
34' GUNNERS ON BACK FOOT
Palace threaten again. Jedinak wins the initial header from a free-kick, Gabbidon's shot is blocked by Koscielny and then Bannan's follow-up goes wide.
31' BETTER FROM PALACE
Cazorla stays down for after a robust tackle by Jedinak. Palace surge down the other end and finally Guedioura gets in a low shot that is straight at Szczesny.
29' PALACE TEST SZCZESNY
There is the first shot on target. A poor clearing header by Arteta sits up nicely for Chamakh, whose 25-yarder forces Szczesny into a comfortable save to his right.
26' THOMAS SHOOTS WIDE
Thomas tries a long-range wind-assisted effort that sails wide. Still we wait for our first shot on goal.
23' MUST TRY HARDER
Chamakh is hardly endearing himself to his new boss, as he lazily tracks back and is caught offside when a long pass is pumped forward from the back. The Moroccan really needs to be more alert and be ready profit from every opportunity because he is not going to see much of the ball today.
21' HOPE FOR THE HOME SIDE
One ray of hope for Palace is that Arsenal have yet to keep a clean sheet on their travels in the league this season.
18' GETTING CLOSER
Arsenal are almost in here. Ozil exchanges passes with Cazorla, but pulls the ball back into space rather than looking directly for Giroud and Palace clear gratefully.
15' PENALTY CLAIMS
Arsenal have some claims for a penalty here. Damien Delaney fell over in the area then a cross from Sagna seemed to brush his arm. No spot-kick, though, is the right call. Bannan heads over at the other end.
14' MAKING HISTORY
Arsenal's last win over Palace in 2005 was not only memorable for the 5-1 scoreline. It was also the first time a Premier League team had fielded a squad without a British player.
12' RAISE YOUR GAME
Cazorla has made a dreadful start to the game for Arsenal. He has given the ball away at least twice with awful passes, very unlike the Spaniard.
10' EAGER TO IMPRESS
One player particularly keen to do well today will be Palace striker Marouane Chamakh, who was let go by the Gunners after three unsuccessful years at the Emirates.
8' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Mathieu Flamini limps off with a groin injury and is replaced by Serge Gnabry.
6' POOR ON THE BALL
Palace are doing a good job of winning the ball, but too often are conceding possession almost immediately with misplaced passes. The second part of that equation has to stop if they are to have a hope today.
4' GIROUD HEADS OVER
A great cross from the right by Sagna picks out Giroud, who leaps high but heads just over the bar from near the penalty spot.
3' WEATHER REPORT
It's blowing a gale in south London this afternoon. Palace have the wind at their backs in the first half.
2' MEMORY AID
Interesting. Palace full-back Joel Ward has a white protective bandage on his left wrist and produced a marker pen before kick-off to write something on it. Wonder what it said: “remember to mark your man” or “don't forget to tackle”? More seriously, perhaps he had been told what his duties were defensively at corners and they were different from what he was used to under previous boss Ian Holloway.
1' HERE WE GO
Arsenal kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS
Caretaker manager Keith Millen makes wholesale changes, drafting in his players after the damaging defeat by Fulham. In come Danny Gabbidon, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Barry Bannan, Jerome Thomas, Adlene Guedioura and Marouane Chamakh. Dropping to the bench are Adrian Mariappa, Stuart O'Keefe, Jason Puncheon, Yannick Bolasie and Dwight Gayle, while Jose Campana misses out altogether. Arsenal make one change from the win over Norwich, Jack WIlshere dropping to the bench and his place going to Aaron Ramsey.

0' PREVIEW
Crystal Palace caretaker manager Keith Millen takes charge of his first game on Saturday with Arsenal the visitors to Selhurst Park. Previous incumbent Ian Holloway parted ways with the club amicably this week, conceding that he was not the right man for the job after a humiliating defeat by fellow strugglers Fulham on Monday night in front of the live television cameras. To be fair to the Eagles, they were pretty good until the Cottagers took the wind out of their sails with two magnificent individual goals. But after conceding two sloppy goals to set-pieces in the second half they were a demoralised bunch by the end, beaten by a team who came within one goal of matching in one night their total scoring output over the previous seven games. Perhaps the visit of a big club and a new face at the helm is just what is needed for Palace to record one of the shock results of the season. But the Gunners themselves will be on a mission as they look to ease the pain of a defeat last time out, to Borussia Dortmund in Tuesday's Champions league encounter at the Emirates. Today's game kicks off at 1245BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Arsenal have been transformed by the arrival of Mesut Ozil, who scored two goals against Norwich last time out, his first league goals for the club to add to the four Premier League assists he tallied in his first two games. Striker Olivier Giroud has benefited from the extra creative influence of the Germany midfielder and is the favourite of many bookmakers to net the first goal. But watch out for Aaron Ramsey, who has had an outstanding start to the season and who will be eager to make amends for the sloppy mistake against Dortmund in midweek that ultimately cost his side the match. Palace are short on attacking flair, but not on hard graft and the tireless Mile Jedinak will have to be at his combative best to try and knock the Arsenal midfield out of its stride.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Arsenal have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 16 wins to two by Palace and eight games being drawn. At Selhurst Park, Arsenal have six wins to one by Palace, with a further six meetings ending up all square. The last meeting between the sides on this ground took place on Nov. 6, 2004 and finished in a 1-1 draw, Aki Riihilahti levelling for Palace just two minutes after Thierry Henry had given Arsenal a 63rd-minute lead. The return later that season on Feb. 14 was more one-sided, Arsenal running out 5-1 winners at Highbury with two more for Henry and one apiece for Dennis Bergkamp, Jose Reyes and Patrick Vieira. Palace's only home win over the Gunners in the league came in Nov. 1979.
0' FORM GUIDE
Entering the weekend, Arsenal are top of the table with 19 points from eight, two clear of Chelsea and Liverpool. The Gunners are the highest scorers in the division on the road with nine from four games and are just one of three teams yet to lose away from home (Liverpool and West Brom are the others). Palace are in 19th place, with just one win from eight and already four points from safety. Only Sunderland and Stoke have scored fewer goals than the Eagles and only Sunderland have conceded more. A leaky defence and goal-shy attack is not a combination conducive to winning many games.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Palace came through Monday's match with Fulham unscathed and have no new injury worries. Paddy McCarthy is still out with a groin injury but has returned to training and striker Glenn Murray remains sidelined by a serious knee injury. Arsenal will give a fitness test to Jack Wilshere, who hurt his ankle against Dortmund. Mathieu Flamini missed that match with concussion but is available again. Still out are Theo Walcott (abdominal surgery), Yaya Sanogo (back), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Abou Diaby (both knee) and Lukas Podolski (hamstring).
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Chris Foy, who has been on the select list of referees since 2001. The Merseyside official has shown 11 yellow cards in his three Premier League matches to date this season. He has produced just one red card in his last 37 top-flight outings, Norwich City goalkeeper Mark Bunn being rather harshly dismissed for handling outside his box at Sunderland last March. Foy's assistants today are Peter Kirkup and Matthew Wilkes, while Michael Oliver is the fourth official.
