Norwich City vs. West Ham United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: NORWICH 3 WEST HAM 1
Norwich come from a goal down at the break to win the match for the first time this season and probably save manager Chris Hughton's job in the process. Their leveller on 54 minutes came from a goalkeeping gaffe by Jussi Jaaskelainen. With his side in control nine minutes into the second half the Hammers goalkeeper inexplicably spilled the ball and in trying to rectify his error felled Gary Hooper. The former Celtic striker got to his feet to net his first Premier League goal from the penalty spot. After Jonny Howson had rattled the West Ham bar with one spectacular strike, Robert Snodgrass netted with another, curling a sumptuous free-kick over the wall and into the corner with 18 minutes left. Leroy Fer added a third in stoppage time. It was quite a turnaround, as West Ham had totally bossed the first half and gone in with a deserved lead given them by Ravel Morrison on 32 minutes with Kevin Nolan supplying the assist. Nolan had twice been denied by Norwich stopper John Ruddy and Guy Demel headed against the bar before the visitors finally got the goal their efforts deserved.
90' GOAL: NORWICH 3 WEST HAM 1
Leroy Fer nets a third for Norwich with a left-foot strike and the points are in the bag.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be three minutes of added time.
89' CHANGES FOR BOTH SIDES
West Ham's final change sees Noble replaced by Matt Jarvis. Norwich take off Hooper and throw on Bradley Johnson.
88' SNODGRASS SHOOTS OVER
Collins blocks a cross-shot from Redmond before Snodgrass lashes a shot over the top. That was a great opening to kill the game off.
85' NERVY IN DEFENCE
Some hesitancy in the Norwich defence almost lets in West Ham for an equaliser, but Ruddy gathers just in time.
84' WELL WIDE FROM ELMANDER
Elmander tries to make his case to stay on the pitch, but shoots well wide of the right-hand upright.
83' CHANGE IN THE OFFING
Bradley Johnson is getting ready to come on for Norwich. My money is on Elmander making way.
82' EASY FOR RUDDY
At the other end Diame shoots from just outside the area, but the deflected effort is easily dealt with by Ruddy near the foot of his post.
80' HEADER WIDE FROM FER
Fer rises well to meet a right-wing corner, but he heads wide under pressure from Demel.
78' HOOPER SHOT SAVED
Norwich are well on top now and Hooper's angled drive is comfortably held by Jaaskelainen.
77' TRIVIA ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who was the West Ham scorer the last time they won on this ground in the league, 40 years ago. It was Bryan ‘Pop' Robson.
76' WEST HAM BOOKING
West Ham midfielder Kevin Nolan was booked for a foul committed just before the second Norwich goal.
74' WEST HAM SUBSTITUTION
West Ham make another change, with Carlton Cole replacing Collison.
73' GOAL DETAILS
It's a peach of a strike from Snodgrass. He curled a free-kick over the wall from the right side of the box and it nestled inside the post, with West Ham's goalkeeper Jaaskelainen left without a hope.
72' GOAL: NORWICH 2 WEST HAM 1
Robert Snodgrass gives Norwich the lead.
71' WEST HAM SUBSTITUTION
West Ham replace Joe Cole with Mohamed Diame.
70' BACK OFF THE CROSSBAR
Noble is robbed of the ball in his own half and Howson's wickedly swerving effort from more than 30 yards crashes back off the bar with the goalkeeper beaten.
67' IT'S TRIVIA TIME
Right West Ham fans, how good is your memory (or, for you cheats, your ability to search the internet!) West Ham last won on this ground in the league in Feb. 1973. But who scored the goal? Answer in a few minutes.
63' REFEREE LETS RAT ESCAPE
Rat commits a foul on Snodgrass and Mr Moss has a call to make. The Romanian gets away with a warning, though there was a sneaky little attempted stamp hidden away from the referee in that melee.
61' WAY OVER THE CROSSBAR
Fer's shot from 25 yards would have cleared three sets of goals stood one on top of the other. Norwich, though, are playing with much more confidence and it's tough to call which way this one is going to go.
58' SHOT ON TARGET
This game is now flowing from end to end. Redmond tries another ambitious effort from long range. It's on target, but lacks the venom to trouble Jaaskelainen.
57' ONLY JUST WIDE
West Ham go down the other end and almost regain the lead. Turner's poor clearing header falls at the feet of Collins, whose shot is not far wide of the post.
54' GOAL: NORWICH 1 WEST HAM 1
Norwich have a lifeline and Hooper drives the ball into the centre of the goal. We're level. What a gift!
53' NORWICH PENALTY
Jaaskelainen drops the ball and then fells Hooper to concede a penalty.
52' LITTLE CAUSE FOR OPTIMISM
No club has trailed more often at half-time in the top flight than Norwich. It's now seven of 11 games in which they have gone in behind. They ended up losing all of the previous six.
51' NORWICH BOOKING
Turner trips Joe Cole outside the area and is shown the first yellow card of the game.
50' LACK OF FIREPOWER
Norwich still have just one first half goal in the Premier League this season, the fewest by any side in either half this season.
47' ODDS SHORTENING
Further to our earlier comment, according to thesackrace.com Martin Jol is 5/6 to be the next Premier League manager to get the sack, while Chris Hughton is 9/4.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Norwich get the second half under way.
45' HT: NORWICH 0 WEST HAM 1
West Ham lead at the break and the home side can count themselves extremely lucky the margin is only a single goal. The breakthrough came on 32 minutes from the highly-rated Ravel Morrison, who netted from close range after Kevin Nolan's initial effort had been blocked. Before that all the clear-cut chances had gone the visitors' way. John Ruddy twice made good saves to keep out shots from Nolan and defender Guy Demel headed against the bar. The Canaries have given the ball away far too many times in what has been a dismal showing in the first 45 minutes.
45' FLAG SAVES NORWICH
West Ham break quickly again but an offside flag against Joe Cole rescues the home side. A one-goal deficit looks insurmountable at the moment. Two would have been catastrophic.
45' BACK COMES SNODGRASS
Snodgrass returns after getting a change of shirt. His nose is bloodied, but he's fine.
43' KICK IN THE TEETH
Robert Snodgrass, who is only just recovered from concussion, is down after getting an accidental kick in the face.
41' WAY OVER FROM REDMOND
Redmond cuts in from the left wing and shoots high into the stands. He's never short of confidence the former Birmingham youngster, but that was ambitious in the extreme.
39' IT'S THE SACK RACE
If things stay as they are it's going to be interesting to see who will be the bookmakers' favourite as the next Premier League manager to get the sack - Chris Hughton or Fulham's Martin Jol.
36' MORRISON CAN'T MISS
By my reckoning Ravel Morrison has had three shots on target this season and scored three goals.
35' NORWICH SUBSTITUTION
Norwich have made a change, Nathan Redmond has replaced Pilkington, who had picked up a knock.
33' GOAL DETAILS
This goal has been coming. Rat was clear down the left and although Nolan's initial effort was blocked by Turner, Morrison was there to turn in the loose ball from close range.
32' GOAL: NORWICH 0 WEST HAM 1
Ravel Morrison puts West Ham in front.
31' IN NEED OF A LIFT
Chris Hughton made the bold decision to go with two strikers today, but neither Elmander nor Hooper have seen much of the ball and when they have received it they have promptly given it away.
27' RUDDY SAVES AGAIN
West Ham attack from deep. Rat directs a ball in from the left to Nolan, whose side-footed attempt forces Ruddy into a decent save diving to his left.
25' NATIVES ARE RESTLESS
You can already sense an air of discontentment inside Carrow Road. Poor Chris Hughton could hear it from his own fans at the end if things don't go according to plan.
22' VISITORS IN CHARGE
West Ham may be playing without a recognised striker tonight, but they have already caused the home team plenty of problems. Sam Allardyce will be very pleased at the start his side have made.
19' GOALS IN SHORT SUPPLY
Entering today there had been a total of just 16 goals in the ten matches featuring Norwich. Only two teams had offered less entertainment in terms of goals: Southampton with 15 (scored 11, conceded four) and Tottenham with 14 (scored nine, conceded five).
16' BUILDING FROM THE BACK
If West Ham concede a goal today, they will likely lose. It's happened the four previous times this season they have failed to keep a clean sheet.
14' LUCKY STILL TO BE LEVEL
West Ham should be in front. Nolan only has the goalkeeper to beat after a pass by Morrison, but Ruddy saves with his foot. From the resulting corner, Demel heads against the bar.
12' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Fer gives the ball away in a dangerous position and although Rat ends up shooting wide, the referee brings play back for a foul on Nolan. Downing shoots into the wall.
10' CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH
Olsson returns to the action. He doesn't seem to have suffered any lasting effects as he throws himself into another challenge.
9' INJURY WORRY
Norwich have an injury concern. Martin Olsson, the man who blocked that Downing shot, is down and needs treatment.
8' LIVELY OPENING
An early Norwich corner is bundled away successfully by West Ham. It's been quite a lively opening and at the other end Downing sees an ambitious long-range drive blocked.
6' BASSONG PAYS THE PRICE
Norwich captain Sebastien Bassong has paid the price for his and his side's dismal defensive display at Manchester City last Saturday. He's been dropped, which is a little harsh, especially as you wouldn't have thought the Hammers are not going to cause the same sort of problems.
3' EARLY SAVE FROM JAASKELAINEN
Pilkington gets forward ahead of his marker Demel down the left and tries a shot from a very narrow angle that Jaaskelainen blocks fairly comfortably.
2' IN NEED OF THREE POINTS
Chris Hughton was waving at someone in the stands before kick-off. Hope he's not waving bye-bye to the club for good at the end of this match. The Norwich boss really needs a win today.
1' HERE WE GO
The minute's silence ahead of Remembrance Sunday impeccably observed, we are now under way. Let's hope we get an early goal to liven up this match.
0' TEAM NEWS
The good news for Norwich is that Robert Snodgrass is back, one of three changes Chris Hughton makes after the drubbing at Manchester City. Also in are Ryan Bennett and Johan Elmander. Steven Whittaker, Sebastien Bassong and Bradley Johnson all drop to the bench. The fit-again James Collins replaces the injured Winston Reid for West Ham and Joe Cole replaces Matt Jarvis, who is among the substitutes.
0' TODAY'S TEAMS
Norwich: Ruddy, Martin, Turner, Ryan Bennett, Olsson, Snodgrass, Howson, Fer, Pilkington, Elmander, Hooper. Subs: Whittaker, Johnson, Bassong, Bunn, Hoolahan, Becchio, Redmond. West Ham: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Collins, Tomkins, Rat, Collison, Noble, Downing, Morrison, Joe Cole, Nolan. Subs: McCartney, Jarvis, Maiga, Adrian, O'Brien, Diame, Carlton Cole.
0' PREVIEW
Don't expect a classic encounter when West Ham travel to Norwich on Saturday for the Premier League's late game. This match features two of the lowest scoring sides in the division and one goal could well earn a priceless three points for one of these strugglers. It's hard to say who needs the result more. Norwich were humiliated by Manchester City last weekend and have conceded 14 goals in their last four matches. West Ham, by contrast, have kept clean sheets in six of their ten matches and featured in no fewer than four goalless draws. Their problem is in attack where they have found the net just once in their last four outings. In truth, it is more than a little surprising we are still talking about Chris Hughton in the present tense as Norwich manager. The Canaries board must surely have thought long and hard about the merits of making a switch after that 7-0 hammering at the Etihad Stadium last weekend. A home defeat today could likely mark the end for the former Tottenham Hotspur player. Today's game kicks off at 1730GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
As well as leaking bucketloads of goals (last Saturday, at least) Norwich have also been struggling to find the net themselves with six in their opening ten matches, the joint lowest total in the Premier League alongside Crystal Palace. Despite investing a lot of money in the summer on attacking players, none of them have fired consistently. Probably the most influential creative force last season was Robert Snodgrass, who scored six times and added nine assists. But the Scot has failed to register in either column in his 665 minutes of top-flight football to date this campaign. There is not going to be a lot separate these teams and if Snodgrass makes a return from injury he really has to step up and be the difference-maker.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
West Ham just have the edge in head-to-head league meetings between the sides with 15 wins to 13 by Norwich and 14 games being drawn. At Carrow Road, Norwich have nine wins, the Hammers three and there have been nine draws. The corresponding match last season on Sep. 9 finished in a goalless draw. A repeat would mean West Ham's third goalless game in a row. The Hammers won the return at Upton Park 2-1 on Jan. 1, taking a grip on the match through Mark Noble's third-minute penalty and a second from Joey O'Brien on 26 minutes. Russell Martin netted a consolation for the visitors in the final minute. West Ham have failed to win in 15 visits to Carrow Road in the league, losing eight and drawing seven. Their last victory on this ground was by a single goal on Feb. 10, 1973.
0' FORM GUIDE
Norwich start the day in 18th place, one point behind Stoke City, who play at Swansea City on Sunday. The Canaries have failed to win in four and their only win in the last seven was at Stoke, a vital victory that without which they'd be in a big hole. West Ham lie in 15th place with ten points, so defeat today would see Norwich climb above them. West Ham have played out goalless draws to Swansea City away and home to Aston Villa in their last two matches. They are without a win in three and although the 3-0 triumph over Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Oct. 6 was mightily impressive, it is their only victory in the last nine league games.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Norwich should welcome back Robert Snodgrass after the Scotland midfielder missed last weekend's game through concussion. Nathan Redmond (hip) remains doubtful and Ricky van Wolfswinkel (foot), Alex Tettey (ankle) and Elliott Bennett (knee) are all out. West Ham will be without Winston Reid, the defender who has helped them keep six clean sheets this season. The New Zealand international suffered an ankle injury in training and is ruled out. James Collins, though, is available after recovering from a hamstring injury. Definitely out are Andy Carroll (heel), Mladen Petric and Matthew Taylor (both thigh) and George McCartney and Alou Diarra (both knee).
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Jon Moss, who was appointed to the select group of referees in June 2011. Born in Sunderland, but now living in Leeds, Moss has shown 18 yellow cards in his five Premier League appointments to date and controversially sent off one player, Crystal Palace midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi in the defeat at Old Trafford after he fell foul of Ashley Young's liking for going to ground. Moss has awarded four penalties this season, two of which have been missed. Some might argue that one of those that was scored, by West Brom midfielder James Morrison at Anfield a fortnight ago, should never have been awarded. The referee's assistants today are Mike Mullarkey and Derek Eaton, while Andy Haines is the fourth official.
