Manchester United vs. Newcastle United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: MAN UTD 0 NEWCASTLE 1
It's a full-blown crisis for Manchester United, who suffer successive damaging home defeats in the space of four days. They were never at their best and came up against a resolute Newcastle side who executed their gameplan to perfection. After keeping a subdued United in check right through the first half, they broke the deadlock just after the hour through a low shot from Yohan Cabaye. United will point to a Patrice Evra header against the post from a corner while the game was still level, but this, again, was not the performance of champions and they threatened all too rarely. There was not even the usual frantic finale and the Toon held out relatively comfortably. United last lost two home games in a row back in May 2002 and this was United's first win at Old Trafford since 1972. David Moyes - and the United board for that matter - have much to ponder this week.
90' NEWCASTLE BOOKING
Anita commits a foul on Anderson that sees him collect a yellow card.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
We are into three minutes of added time. What have United left in the tank?
90' PLAYING FOR TIME
A comical incident on the sidelines sees Hatem Ben Arfa trying to block David Moyes from giving the ball to a United player to take a throw-in. Newcastle are desperate for the win here!
88' CHEAP FREE-KICK
Yanga-Mbiwa gives away a cheap free-kick near the left corner flag. There was no need for that tackle, but Januzaj's free-kick fails to pick out a team-mate.
86' HISTORY IN THE MAKING
Do you know who Newcastle played the week before their historic win at Old Trafford back in 1972? They lost 2-1 to Southern League Hereford United in one of the greatest FA Cup shocks of all time! Remember Ronnie Radford's epic goal?
83' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa replaces Debuchy, who appears to have hurt his left hip.
82' IMPOSSIBLE TASK
To equal the 89 points they managed in last season's title campaign United would need 67 points in the remaining 24 fixtures, which would equate to 22 wins, one draw and one defeat. That defeat looks like being today, so there is no room for error!
79' FULL-BLOODED TACKLE
Vidic takes out Anita with a thunderous tackle. He got the ball, but took out the man as well. Shola Ameobi replaces the scorer, Cabaye.
78' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
Having ascertained that Robin Van Persie is fit to last the 90 minutes, David Moyes makes his final change. It's Antonio Valencia for Rafael.
76' GREAT CHANCE SPURNED
Van Persie's free-kick from the right is allowed to travel all the way through and had Jonny Evans gambled he would have been left with a tap-in at the far post.
75' JUST WIDE FROM ZAHA
Zaha finds a little space in the area on the left and tries a curling shot that isn't wide of the post by much.
73' GOAL DISALLOWED
Robin van Persie heads home from a right-wing free-kick, but the flag was rightly up for offside.
70' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
Another United change sees Anderson replace Cleverley.
69' BEN ARFA BLASTS OVER
Ben Arfa switches the ball from his right foot to his left before shooting well over the crossbar from 25 yards. He never lacks for confidence, the Frenchman.
68' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
There is the change: it's Zaha on for Nani.
67' ZAHA GETS READY
Wilfried Zaha's tweet yesterday saying that stories linking him with manager David Moyes' daughter were totally untrue seems to have done the trick. He is being prepared for action.
66' QUIZ ANSWER
Earlier we asked you to name the Newcastle scorers the last time the Magpies won at Old Trafford, in 1972. They were Stewart Barrowclough and John ‘Tenpole' Tudor.
65' DREADFUL TACKLE
Nani catches Anita with a dreadful tackle. There is no card, but looking at the slow-motion replay the Portuguese could have had no complaints had the referee chosen to dismiss him.
63' GOAL DETAILS
Sissoko was a little lucky that a ricochet fell kindly into his path, but he made the most of it, pulling the ball back for Santon. Nemanja Vidic did his best to try and block the Frenchman's effort, but it still found its way into the corner.
62' GOAL: MAN UTD 0 NEWCASTLE 1
Yohan Cabaye gives Newcastle the lead!
61' WELL DONE REF
Famous last words, perhaps, but I've been impressed with the performance of referee Andre Marriner today. It's easy to favour the home side under pressure from 70,000-plus fans, but he has been very even-handed. In the meantime, Sissoko shoots way wide of the post.
59' IT'S QUIZ TIME
Right then, Newcastle supporters. Call yourself a true fan? Then name your scorers the last time your side won at Old Trafford (a 2-0 win). If you don't know, ask your grandad, he might remember! Answer in a few minutes.
57' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Newcastle make a change, with Hatem Ben Arfa replacing the ineffective Gouffran.
56' HEADER AGAINST THE POST
United are inches away from taking the lead. Evra is unmarked and heads against the post. The rebound strikes Anita on the arm but the referee says no penalty despite United's protests.
54' PRESSURE BUILDS
United are just starting to raise the tempo here. These are a crucial five minutes for Newcastle because you feel a goal is coming.
53' DOUBLE SAVE FROM KRUL
Hernandez takes down a terrific crossfield pass from Van Persie in his stride and lashes a shot goalwards. Krul saves well and then gets down to keep out a low strike from Januzaj from the edge of the box.
51' DANGER DOWN THE RIGHT
Santon is caught out of position and Rafael is allowed the freedom of Old Trafford down the right. His cross is good, but Debuchy is well placed to head back to his own goalkeeper.
48' NOW'S THE TIME TO STRIKE
The worrying thing for United is that Robin van Persie is not fully fit and not expected to last the 90 minutes, according to his manager. They need to score sooner rather than later.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Newcastle get the second half under way.
45' HT: MAN UTD 0 NEWCASTLE 0
It's goalless at the break, which will suit the visitors better than it will the champions. Newcastle have been compact and difficult to break down with five men in midfield and neither goalkeeper has been unduly troubled. Krul was forced to make one routine save early on to deny Phil Jones, while Loic Remy head well wide at the other end before Mathieu Debuchy saw his angled effort parried by David de Gea.
45' DE GEA SAVES AGAIN
Santon crosses from the left and a powerful long-range header from Debuchy forces De Gea into another save. That's half-time.
45' DEBUCHY DENIED
Debuchy sneaks in behind Evra and has a clear sight of goal. The angle is tight and De Gea blocks the shot to save his full-back a half-time mauling by David Moyes.
45' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
We will have three minutes of added time at the end of a lacklustre first half.
44' PENALTY CLAIMS WAVED AWAY
Hernandez goes down under a challenge from Coloccini, but Mr Marriner is adamant it was not a penalty. It looked like a dive, actually, on first viewing. The replays confirm that and it should have been a booking.
42' WAY WIDE FROM TIOTE
Tiote collects a pass from Cabaye and shoots from 30 yards. It goes a distance wide of the post, but Jones came in and clattered him just as he pulled the trigger.
40' FIRING BLANKS
After drawing a blank against Everton, United have failed to score in two Premier League home games in the same season for the first time since 2006-07 and have won only five of their last 11 league games at Old Trafford.
39' WALKING ON THIN ICE
Tiote is a lucky lad as he catches Hernandez in the face with his arm but receives no punishment. That's his third offence of the half and he could easily have been in the book for any one of them.
37' FINE SKILL FROM CHICHARITO
Hernandez does magnificently to retrieve a long ball forward and his pass between defenders in only inches away from putting Nani clear down the inside-left channel.
35' WE WANT GOALS
Don't count on this one being goalless. United have conceded more goals than any other club in the top half of the table - apart from Newcastle.
32' CABAYE INJURED
Cabaye is now down with what appears to be an injury to his right heel. He is going to need treatment as Newcastle play on.
31' THAT'S GOING TO STING
Jones is limping after catching the follow-through of a crunching tackle by Tiote above his shinguard.
29' DEFLECTED OVER THE BAR
Sissoko skips past two tackles and feeds Cabaye, whose long-range deflected effort drops just over the bar.
28' FINE DEFENDING
Tiote's clumsy foul on Rafael gives United a free-kick wide on the right. Van Persie's delivery is good, but Williamson heads away and then makes another important clearing header from the ensuing cross.
25' CABAYE SHOOTS WIDE
Cabaye drags a shot wide at the other end after collecting a pass from the influential Tiote.
24' JONES DECLINES CHANCE
Newcastle are lucky that a United free-kick drops for Jones, who is not confident enough to take on the volley. Robin van Persie would have blasted that into the net without thinking.
23' GREAT TOUCH BY JANUZAJ
Januzah and Hernandez combine superbly down the United right and Debuchy is called upon to make an important clearance. Newcastle look unsure defending the resulting corner, but they escape.
20' VIDIC IN THE WARS
Vidic heads the back of Remy's head and the Serbian has come off worse from that collision. A sore nose will not force him off.
19' REMY HEADS WIDE
Sissoko crosses from the right and Remy gets in front of Evans but heads well wide. The United defender was caught on his heels there.
17' NANI NEEDS TREATMENT
Nani has taken a blow to the left side of his head and will need treatment. He caught a flailing arm from Mathieu Debuchy.
16' SOME 31 GAMES WITHOUT SUCCESS
In fact, Newcastle's last win at OT was back in 1972. They have lost 23 matches since and drawn the other eight.
15' HISTORY AGAINST THEM
Newcastle have only won one of their last 23 matches against Manchester United in all competitions and never beaten United at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
12' CLEVERLEY SHOT BLOCKED
United look like they mean business today. Nani gets clear down the left and Cleverley sees a shot blocked before Krul gratefully picks up the loose ball.
10' JONES TESTS KRUL
Januzaj creates the first chance of the match, playing the ball inside for Jones, whose angled shot is well saved low down by Krul.
8' NEWCASTLE BOOKING
There is the first yellow card, for a foul by Cabaye on Januzaj. That was a very poor tackle by the Frenchman, who will be suspended for Newcastle's next match.
7' PHYSICAL APPROACH
Newcastle have committed three fouls in the opening five minutes. They had better be careful, Mr Marriner has shown a penchant for producing red cards in recent months.
4' REMY THE DANGERMAN
Sissoko just over-hits a long ball from the back aiming for the forward run of Newcastle dangerman Loic Remy. The visitors are in yellow shirts and blue shorts today.
3' LATE TO THE PARTY
Newcastle were late to emerge from their changing room, which is the reason for the slightly late kick-off (only a minute). If it were up to me the home side would be allowed to kick off at the correct time, whether or not their opponents were ready.
2' TRIBUTE TO MANDELA
There was a minute's applause before kick-off to celebrate the life of former South Africa President and philanthropist, Nelson Mandela.
1' HERE WE GO
United kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TEAM NEWS
Robin van Persie is back for Manchester United, who make seven changes to the side beaten by Everton. The only four players to retain their places from Wednesday night are goalkeeper David de Gea and three defenders: Rafael, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra. Newcastle make the one change. Alan Pardew has opted to play just one striker, so Shola Ameobi drops to the bench and in comes Vurnon Anita.

0' PREVIEW
Three games without a win including a shock home setback by former club Everton once more sees Manchester United manager David Moyes in desperate need of a result when his side welcome Newcastle United to the Theatre of Dreams for Saturday's early kick-off. The champions are now 12 points behind leaders Arsenal just 14 games into the season and already have a monumental task on their hands to retain the title. The good news for Moyes is that the next five games are all fixtures the champions should win easily, whereas Arsenal's next three are against Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea, so now is the time to make a move and close the gap. Compared to their other performances in recent weeks, Newcastle played poorly at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday night, but their 3-0 defeat by Swansea also owed much to some bad luck and one or two refereeing decisions that went against them. United cannot afford to underestimate the visitors because there is enough talent in the Tynesiders' ranks to spring another big shock. It was 21 years since Everton last won at Old Trafford prior to Wednesday night and Newcastle have had to wait even longer, some 41 years, for their last triumph on this ground. When was the last time the Toffees and Toon both won at United in the same season? Answer: never. That is how big a calamity back-to-back reverses would be for the home side and it will be interesting to see how they respond to a type of pressure they have not experienced in a good few seasons - a fear of failure. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
According to the Manchester Evening News, David de Gea was United's outstanding player in Wednesday's defeat against Everton, a rare occurrence at Old Trafford and an indication of how poorly the champions played in front of their own fans. In recent weeks, though, Wayne Rooney has consistently been United's outstanding player and has not only shouldered the scoring burden in the absence through injury of Robin van Persie, but has put in the sort of tireless shifts for which he has become renowned. Rooney, though, is suspended for this one, so United will be praying that Van Persie is fit to return. Newcastle's major threat is Loic Remy, who has eight goals in his last ten outings and was only denied a ninth by a wonderful save by Swansea's Michel Vorm in midweek.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 72 wins to 39 by Newcastle and 37 games being drawn. At Old Trafford, United have 45 wins to nine by Newcastle, with a further 20 meetings ending up all square. United edged the corresponding match last season on Boxing Day in a seven-goal thriller. Three times they trailed, to goals from James Perch (4 mins), Jonny Evans (og, 28) and Papiss Cisse (68). Three times they came back through Evans, at the right end (25), Patrice Evra (58) and Robin van Persie (71), before Javier Hernandez netted a last-minute winner. That result completed the double for United, who had won 3-0 at St James' Park on Oct. 7 with goals from Evans (8), Evra (15) and Tom Cleverley (71).
0' FORM GUIDE
United start the day in ninth place with 22 points from 14 games, two points behind seventh-placed Newcastle. The Reds have netted only eight league goals in seven home games, their lowest return at this stage since 1992-93, the inaugural season of the Premier League. Should Newcastle leave with at least a point today, it will mark the first time since the 2003-04 season that United have gone four games without a victory. The Toon's defeat by Swansea ended a run of four successive victories. They have leaked 14 goals on the road, with only Hull and Stoke (both 15) and Norwich (21) having conceded more.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Wayne Rooney serves a one-game ban for United having reached five yellow cards with his booking against Everton on Wednesday. Phil Jones is available after sitting out in midweek due to suspension. Michael Carrick (Achilles) is still out, but United are hopeful Robin van Persie (groin) could return. Papiss Cisse will have a late test on the ankle injury that forced his late withdrawal from the Newcastle squad to face Swansea in midweek. Midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa, who also missed that match, has recovered from illness and is available.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Andre Marriner, who was appointed to the select group of referees in 2005. The West Midlands whistleblower has dispensed 41 cautions in 11 Premier League appointments this season. The visitors should note players from clubs from the North East have been the recipients of all four of his red cards this season. Steven Taylor was dismissed in the defeat at Manchester City in the opening round of fixtures and Newcastle team-mate Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa saw red for a professional foul at home to Liverpool, before Sunderland's Lee Cattermole and Andrea Dossena were shown the red card within four minutes of each other in the defeat at Hull last month. The assistant referees today are Peter Kirkup and Sian Massey, while Neil Swarbrick is the fourth official.
