Sunderland vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Minute Commentary
90' FT: SUNDERLAND 1 TOTTENHAM 2
Spurs go back above Newcastle into sixth place after a thoroughly-deserved victory at the Stadium of Light. A mundane first half burst into life when Adam Johnson gave Sunderland a 37th-minute lead, profiting from the latest in a line of recent mistakes by Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. That goal seemed to sting the visitors into life and they were level inside six minutes, Paulinho reacting quickest to a knockdown from Nacer Chadli to net from close range. If there was little to choose between the sides in the first period, Spurs dominated the second and took the lead in fortuitous circumstances five minutes after the restart when a cross from the left by Mousa Dembele ricocheted into the net off Sunderland defender John O'Shea. Spurs had a host of chances to make the game safe, Defoe twice hitting the post and shooting wide when clean through. And they almost paid the price for their wastefulness. Sunderland had strong claims for a handball at a corner by substitute Sandro, but referee Lee Mason will realise he made a mistake waving play on when he gets home and watches the highlights later.
90' MORE SPURS CHANCES
Spurs go close to a third. Defoe finds Townsend, whose dipping shot is palmed over by Mannone. Paulinho then fails to set up the unmarked Defoe.
90' WAYWARD AGAIN
A cross comes in from the right. Bardsley has space, but his header ends up about 12 rows back in the stand behind the goal.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
We are into the first of five minutes of added time. Still hope for Sunderland. Fletcher heads tamely over.
89' SCARE FOR SPURS
Sunderland almost level after Mr Mason fails to award Spurs a free-kick. Lloris palms out a cross-shot by Borini, but Dawson clears just before Fletcher can get to the loose ball.
88' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
Altidore is cautioned for hacking down Townsend. It's his second yellow card of the campaign.
87' NO WAY THROUGH
Sunderland are huffing and puffing, but their final ball is lacking, as it has been all night.
85' TOTTENHAM SUBSTITUTION
Gylfi Sigurdsson replaces Nacer Chadli for Tottenham.
84' PAULINHO HEADS WIDE
Townsend leaves Larsson for dead and crosses for Paulinho, whose powerful header whistles past the post. The Brazilian should have had his second there.
83' WARNING SHOT
A loose ball near the penalty spot drops kindly for Borini, whose unconvincing effort is straight at Lloris.
80' OFF THE POST AGAIN
Defoe hits the woodwork again with a first-time flick from Townsend's cross. Mannone was rooted to the spot there.
79' TOTTENHAM SUBSTITUTION
Here's another change for the visitors. Holtby goes off, Andros Townsend gets a run for the last 11 minutes.
78' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Sunderland's last change sees Celustka replaced by Emanuele Giaccherini.
76' STRONG PENALTY CLAIMS
Sunderland are convinced they should have a penalty for handball by Sandro from a left-wing corner. Tell you what, having seen the slow-motion replay they have a case!
74' SPURS STILL IN CHARGE
More pressure on the Sunderland goal, but Holtby's left-footed effort is straight at Mannone, who saves easily.
73' TOTTENHAM SUBSTITUTION
Spurs make their first switch, with Sandro taking the place of Dembele.
72' FLETCHER HEADS WIDE
Larsson swings in a well-directed cross from the right for Fletcher, whose downward header drifts wide of the far post.
68' DOUBLE SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Sunderland make a double change, with Lee Cattermole and Fabio Borini replacing Colback and Johnson.
66' WHAT A MISS BY DEFOE
Holtby slides a wonderful pass through for Defoe, who only has the goalkeeper to beat. A lazy effort from the England striker slides wide of the post. That was most unlike Defoe, whose is normally an excellent finisher.
65' CHADLI IMPRESSING
Nacer Chadli has seen limited action for Tottenham this season, but he looks a capable player: dangerous going forward, excellent in the air and with a good turn of pace.
61' ANOTHER CHANCE GOES BEGGING
Lennon tees up Paulinho, who mis-kicks from nine yards out. Spurs may live to regret not killing Sunderland off here.
60' SAVE FROM MANNONE
A 30-yard drive from Dembele bounces awkwardly in front of Mannone, who has difficulty making the save.
58' OFF THE POST
More Spurs pressure. Lennon gets to the bye-line and crosses for Defoe, who sees his header come back off the post.
57' HOLTBY SHOT BLOCKED
Walker outpaces his man down the right and pulls the ball back for Holtby, who sees his shot from 12 yards blocked by Brown. Sunderland are really under pressure here.
56' POOR FRONT-RUNNERS
Sunderland came into this match having thrown away eight points from winning positions, the highest in the Premier League. They cannot afford to add to that total tonight.
54' VERY CLOSE TO A THIRD
Spurs break swiftly from their own half. Defoe and Chadli combine and the Belgian looks like he has set the third on a plate for Holtby before Johnson makes an excellent last-ditch saving tackle.
53' SHOOTING THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT
Sunderland have now scored five own goals this season, the most in the Premier League.
51' GOAL DETAILS
It's a bit rough on the former Manchester United defender, who knew little about it. Dembele beat Colback down the left and his low cross hit O'Shea on the inside part of his left foot and cannoned into the net, giving Mannone no chance.
50' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 1 SPURS 2
Spurs are in front. It's an own goal by John O'Shea.
47' MANNONE TO THE RESCUE
Ki's dreadful back-pass almost lets in Defoe, but Mannone is quickly off his line to clear.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Spurs get the second half under way.
45' HT: SUNDERLAND 1 TOTTENHAM 1
It's level at the interval. Adam Johnson's 37th-minute strike gave Sunderland the advantage, the winger lashing the ball into the unguarded net after Hugo Lloris made a right mess of a cross from the right by Ondrej Celustka. But Spurs were level inside six minutes, Paulinho netting from close range, with Nacer Chadli supplying the assist. It was a lively end to what had been a pretty ordinary first half before the opening goal.
45' ONLY JUST OVER THE BAR
Spurs go close to taking the lead, with Chadli's excellent header from a corner going just over the bar.
45' AWKWARD SAVE FROM LLORIS
Celustka's powerful long-range drive is beaten away with difficulty by Lloris.
43' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 1 SPURS 1
Spurs are level. Walker's free-kick is aimed beyond the far post, Chadli heads down and Paulinho pokes the ball home from close range.
40' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
Ondrej Celustka is cautioned for a nasty tackle on Naughton. Mr Mason was reluctant to get the book out at first, because the Czech's is not an easy name to spell.
39' GOAL DETAILS
It's a blunder by Hugo Lloris. He came for a cross from the right by Celustka and only succeeding in palming it straight into the path of Johnson, who hit a blistering shot into the top corner.
38' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 1 SPURS 0
Adam Johnson gives Sunderland the lead.
37' GOOD BLOCK BY BARDSLEY
Some fine first-time passing from Spurs creates a shooting chance for Holtby, but Bardsley closes down the midfielder and gets in an important block.
36' DEFOE SHOT BLOCKED
Defoe outpaces the sluggish Sunderland defence and sees his shot blocked by Bardsley.
34' EFFORT ON TARGET
Chadli heads goalwards and although the effort is tame, it is officially the first on target. From that corner Wes Brown had Michael Dawson in a headlock and is lucky not to have conceded a penalty.
32' EXCITEMENT IN SHORT SUPPLY
Half an hour gone and still we wait for our first shot on target. Wearisome on Wearside.
29' GLOVE STORY
The Weather Channel says the temperature currently on Wearside is a balmy eight degrees Celsius. But Holtby, Lennon and Altidore are both sporting black gloves, presumably to soak up the sweat generated by all that running around in humidity currently reading 78 per cent on the hygrometer.
27' WIDE FROM DEFOE
Defoe is the next to try a shot from outside the box, cutting on to his left foot and dragging his effort wide of the post.
26' ALTIDORE FAR FROM HAPPY
Altidore has a painful landing as he falls over the top of the advertising hoardings. Walker tries to help him up and gets a push in the chest for his troubles.
24' AMBITIOUS ATTEMPT
Holtby has got a taste for goal after his strike against Fulham. He tries another long-range effort, but this one draws howls of derision from the home fans.
21' COLBACK SHOOTS OVER
Fletcher and Altidore combine neatly to set up Colback, whose fierce drive clears the angle of post and crossbar.
19' POWERFUL STRIKE FROM HOLTBY
Back come Spurs. Holtby advances and shoots from 25 yards. Mannone tips the ball around the post, although it was probably going just wide.
18' WIDE OF THE POST
A long ball from the back by Bardsley picks out Fletcher, who takes the shot on early and sees it roll well wide of the far post.
16' GIVE US A GOAL
The advertisements on the electronic hoardings around the ground have been promoting a product with the slogan “men's skincare for scoring”. No signs yet that the goal-shy Roberto Soldado is applying the lotion while sat on the Tottenham bench.
14' ONLY JUST OVER
Paulinho lets fly with a dipping 25-yard drive that drops just the wrong side of the crossbar.
11' GROUND TO MAKE UP
It's been a bad day for Sunderland so far, with wins for Crystal Palace, Stoke and Norwich down the bottom of the table.
9' RAMPAGING RUN
Altidore goes on a rampaging run through the middle that leaves a trail of Spurs defenders in his wake. The burst comes to nothing, but it is a warning to the visitors.
7' MISSING A KEY COMPONENT
Sandro is only on the bench for Spurs tonight. How important is the Brazilian to Tottenham? In all competitions this season the Londoners have lost just one of 11 with him in the side and three of 12 without him.
4' ATTACKING FORMATION
Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has decided to go for it, playing two out-and-out strikers in Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore.
2' MAKESHIFT DEFENCE
Tottenham have a makeshift defence tonight, with Kyle Naughton filling in for Jan Vertonghen at left-back and midfielder Etienne Capoue drafted into the centre of defence with Younes Kaboul also on the sidelines.
1' HERE WE GO
Sunderland kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' PREVIEW
Tottenham's win at Fulham in midweek means the managerial pressure has been lifted from the shoulders of Andre Villas-Boas and has instead been heaped on his counterpart at Manchester United, David Moyes. But rest assured, AVB will be under the microscope again should his side come a cropper at bottom club Sunderland on Saturday night. To be fair to Tottenham, they have only had one really bad display, which saw them capitulate at Manchester City. Prior to that they met Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul in inspired form and last weekend should have beaten Manchester United but for a couple of defensive blunders. For Sunderland manager Gus Poyet, it's a second reunion with a former club in four days. Having seen his side beaten 4-3 at home by Chelsea on Wednesday, the Uruguayan comes up against the London club for whom he made 145 appearances between June 2001 and May 2004, later returning for a year-long spell as first team coach under Juande Ramos. There were pluses from the Chelsea match - it was only the second time this season that Sunderland had scored more than one goal in a Premier League game. And midfielder Andrea Dossena figures Spurs could be ripe for the taking. “We know Chelsea are a great team,” he said. “I know Tottenham are good but I don't think they're as good as Chelsea.” We shall see. Today's game kicks off at 1730GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Last season Steven Fletcher made a red-hot start to the campaign with five goals in his first four games. Those goals were worth five extra points to the Black Cats, who finished just three points above the relegation zone. This time round the Scotland striker has been hampered by injury problems and has managed just two goals in ten Premier League appearances this season. Consequently only Crystal Palace have a worse scoring record than the paltry 11 goals Sunderland have managed in their 14 games so far. The home side will doubtless pose a threat from set-pieces: all three of their goals against Chelsea in midweek come from set plays. It remains puzzling how a team so full of talent as Tottenham can average less than a goal a game, and it is about time their flair players stopped flattering to deceive and started to deliver. Take Paulinho, for instance. Bags of skill, always on the lookout for a chance with his well-timed runs into the opposition penalty area - yet the Brazilian has just one goal and three assists in 1,230 minutes of football. Aaron Lennon only returned from injury at the end of October after missing six matches, but even so he has yet to register a goal or an assist since the opening game of the season.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Tottenham have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 62 wins to 48 by Sunderland and 41 games being drawn. On Wearside, Sunderland have 22 wins to 14 by Spurs, with a further 14 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on Dec. 29 saw Tottenham win 2-1. John O'Shea gave the home side the lead five minutes before half-time, but two goals in three minutes just after the restart from Carlos Cuellar (og) and Aaron Lennon turned the game on its head. The Londoners went on to complete the double on the final day of the season, courtesy of a solitary goal from Gareth Bale, the last-minute winner being the perfect way for the Welshman to sign off at White Hart Lane before his summer move to Real Madrid.
0' FORM GUIDE
Tottenham start the day in sixth place with 24 points from 14 games, 10 adrift of leaders Arsenal. The Gunners are the only side in the division to boast a better away record than their north London rivals, who have won four times on the road, conceding six goals in one game at Manchester City and just two in the other six. Sunderland fell back to the foot of the table after previous basement boys Crystal Palace beat West Ham on Tuesday night. They have just eight points - five fewer than the same stage last season - and are five points away from safety, though they have won two of their last three at home.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Sunderland have no new injury worries and defender John O'Shea has been declared fit despite appearing to aggravate a groin problem during Wednesday night's 4-3 defeat by Chelsea. Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has been ruled out after injuring his ankle in the win at Fulham. Mousa Dembele missed that match with an ongoing hip problem, but could be available having not played since last weekend. Danny Rose is back in training after an ankle injury but is not expected to make a return until Dec. 14. Emmanuel Adebayor (knee) and Christian Eriksen (ankle) remain sidelined.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Lee Mason, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2006. The man from Lancashire has dished out 34 cautions in his nine top-flight games to date and produced one red card, to West Ham's Mark Noble for two bookable offences in the home defeat by Everton in September. Mason's midweek appointment was the fairly incident-free home win for Crystal Palace over West Ham. His assistants today are Simon Long and Derek Eaton, while Martin Atkinson is the fourth official.
