West Bromwich Albion vs. Norwich City
Minute Commentary
90' FULL-TIME REPORT
Steve Clarke will leave The Hawthorns scratching his head this evening after his West Bromwich Albion side went down 2-0 to Norwich City. The Baggies dominated the game, racking up 20 shots - over half of which were on target - but were made to pay for their profligate ways. Gary Hooper's 13th minute strike came against the run of play but put the Canaries, usually poor on the road, in control. Gareth McAuley and Stephane Sessegnon spurned good chances to level the scores up before half-time, while Sessegnon and Saido Berahino had sights of goal after the interval. Shane Long came closest to making it 1-1 but his header was magnificently saved by an impressive John Ruddy. With time running out, the visitors broke upfield and Leroy Fer's low effort nestled in the back of the net to give Chris Hughton's men a much-needed three points. They move above Steve Clarke's troubled Baggies in the Premier League table.
90' FULL-TIME WHISTLE
And that's full-time at The Hawthorns. Norwich City pick up a rare away win, beating West Bromwich Albion by two goals to nil.
90' BERAHINO WAY OVER
That sums up their day. Saido Berahino receives the ball 35 yards out and decides to shoot, despite being completely off balance. Predictably, the ball arcs into the top tier of the stand behind the goal.
90' FOUR ADDED MINUTES
We're into four minutes of added time at The Hawthorns but the home fans know that this one is over now. Despite having 20 shots, half of which were on target, Norwich are somehow going to head back east with all three points.
90' FER SCORES
That's it now! It's a real smash-and-grab from Norwich. Nathan Redmond breaks for the Canaries, before picking out the run of Leroy Fer. The Dutchman works the ball onto his right boot inside the penalty area, before smashing low past Boaz Myhill. What a win for Chris Hughton and his side.
89' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's in! Leroy Fer seals it!
88' STUNNING SAVE
What a save by John Ruddy! Stephane Sessegnon takes the ball past two Norwich defenders, before chipping the ball to Shane Long in the middle. Long's header looks destined to nestle in the corner of the goal, but Ruddy scrambles across to slap the ball away from danger.
87' BERAHINO WIDE
And there's another chance for West Brom. Stephane Sessegnon helps the ball on for Saido Berahino inside the box. The youngster is forced wide by the immense Sebastien Bassong, though, and blasts his shot into the side netting.
85' MURPHY FOILED
Norwich have the chance to close off the game on the break as Josh Murphy breaks clear of the opposition defence. However, Claudio Yacob gets back to do some great defensive work for the hosts, scrambling the ball away from the feet of the youngster.
84' ONE WAY TRAFFIC
It's still one way traffic at The Hawthorns. Chris Brunt fizzes a shot at goal from 25 yards out, but it's straight down the throat of a grateful John Ruddy, who holds on despite the ball skipping off the surface.
82' VYDRA FOR ANICHEBE
Steve Clarke opts to make his last substitution, bringing off Victor Anichebe and introducing Matej Vydra to the game. Can Vydra grab that equaliser for West Brom?
81' NO END PRODUCT
Shane Long has been bright since coming on at half-time but the final result hasn't been there from either him or his West Brom team mates. The Irish international dribbles directly at the Norwich defence, but takes one touch too many, overrunning the ball as it goes out for a goal kick. Frustrating.
79' MURPHY BOOKED
Josh Murphy makes an immediate impact for Norwich City, sliding in late on Billy Jones to become the latest addition to Mark Clattenburg's list of yellow card recipients.
77' MULUMBU DRIVE
That was close! Youssouf Mulumbu uses his strength to brush off Leroy Fer on the edge of the area, before spinning away from Bradley Johnson and blasting the ball just wide from the edge of the area. Meanwhile, Norwich make their first substitution, withdrawing Johan Elmander and bringing on Josh Murphy.
75' LONG WASTE
Oh dear. West Brom clear a Norwich corner and get a chance to counter attack. Shane Long advances 50 yards upfield and has plenty of support on both his left and right hand sides, but instead he decides to shoot. The ball goes way, way over. From the resulting goal kick, John Ruddy is booked for time wasting.
73' LAYING SIEGE
The Baggies are laying siege to the Norwich defence, but somehow the visitors are batting away their efforts to equalise. With the Canaries having conceded an average of three goals per away game this season, you'd expect an equaliser to come at some point. West Brom are looking increasingly frustrated, though.
71' ANICHEBE HEADER
The chances keep coming. Billy Jones stretches well to keep the ball in play on the right byline and squares it across the penalty area. Victor Anichebe is there to meet the ball at the near post but his effort lacks accuracy and is miles wide as it comes off the side of his head.
69' LONG VOLLEY
There's a half-hearted appeal for a handball as the buccaneering Billy Jones chips the ball into the chest of Martin Olsson. The Baggies will take any way they can of getting back into this game. Just after, a Youssouf Mulumbu shot is deflected to Shane Long inside the penalty area, but his side-footed volley is extremely tame and easily saved.
66' SESSEGNON DENIED
Another let-off for Norwich! The visitors fail to clear a Youssouf Mulumbu pass into the area and the ball ricochets to Stephane Sessegnon six yards out. From an acute angle, he side-foots at goal but John Ruddy spreads himself well to save.
64' HOWSON CLOSE
Norwich nearly double their lead through Jonny Howson. Martin Olsson's cross from the left is recovered by a tenacious Gary Hooper in the middle of the box. The striker lays the ball off for Howson, who takes a touch before caressing the ball just over the bar.
61' BAGGIES RIGHT SIDE THREAT
West Brom's main threat is still coming from down the right, despite Morgan Amalfitano's surprise withdrawal. First, Saidio Berahino whips a cross straight into the arms of John Ruddy, before Youssouf Mulumbu stretches his legs before seeing a delivery of his own blocked by Michael Turner. Meanwhile at the other end, Nathan Redmond nearly exploits the Baggies on the counter attack but his pull-back doesn't find a team mate.
58' CANARIES REGAIN COMPOSURE
After a chaotic opening ten minutes to the second half, Norwich have regained their composure somewhat, keeping the ball inside the West Brom half for some time. After the Baggies' attacking substitutions at the break, the Canaries should have more room to counter attack as the game wears on.
54' WHITTAKER BOOKED
Steven Whittaker goes into Mark Clattenburg's book after pulling a goal-bound Shane Long to the ground 35 yards from the Norwich goal. There was cover from his team mates, otherwise it would have been a red card for the Scottish defender.
53' SESSEGNON FLUFFS
What's happened there? The entire Norwich defence stopped, thinking they had won a free-kick, allowing Stephane Sessegnon to go one-on-one with John Ruddy. The attacking midfielder is odds-on to equalise but tucks his effort wide of Ruddy's left-hand post. What a woeful finish.
50' HAWTHORNS ROAR
The Hawthorns crowd are really getting behind their side at the start of this second half and West Brom are certainly reacting to that. Replays suggest that the ball certainly did strike the palm of Martin Olsson on the goal line, so Norwich have had their share of luck in the opening few minutes of the half.
48' PENALTY SHOUT
There's some drama straight away! West Brom win a corner kick and there's a scramble in the middle of the penalty area. Stephane Sessegnon tries to bundle the ball over the line at the far post but Martin Olsson blocks his shot, the ball seemingly hitting his hand. Mark Clattenburg isn't interested in the Baggies protests, though.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Both teams are back out on the pitch and we're back underway at The Hawthorns. West Brom have made two changes at the interval, introducing Shane Long and Saido Berahino in place of Liam Ridgewell and Morgan Amalfitano. Can the Baggies turn this one around or can the Canaries secure a rare Premier League away victory?
45' HALF-TIME REPORT
West Bromwich Albion fans greeted the half-time whistle with boos as their team finds themselves a goal down to perennial away strugglers Norwich City. Gary Hooper's clinical 13th minute strike is the goal that separates the two sides - a precise, powerful finish from just inside the box after a threaded pass from the impressive Leroy Fer. The Baggies have had chances to respond, with Victor Anichebe, Youssouf Mulumbu and Gareth McAuley all going close, but overall the hosts have lacked composure and urgency, simplifying the job for Chris Hughton's men and irking the home support at The Hawthorns.
45' HALF-TIME WHISTLE
And that's half-time at The Hawthorns. Norwich City have a slender lead over West Bromwich Albion at the interval.
45' REDMOND TRICKERY
Norwich are on top as the half nears its end, with Nathan Redmond looking particularly bright, bamboozling Liam Ridgewell with some tricky footwork. He should have been awarded a corner kick for his efforts but the assistant referee rules that the ball last touched the winger before rolling out of play.
41' SESSEGNON BACK-HEEL
It's a great chance for West Brom, and it's from a corner kick again. Chris Brunt's inswinging delivery misses Billy Jones at the near post, but Stephane Sessegnon tries to back-heel the ball into the goal from five yards out. He fails to connect, though, and the ball veers away from goal for a goal kick.
38' HUGHTON WANTS HALF-TIME
Chris Hughton is pacing across his technical area, clearly eager for the half-time whistle to come. Norwich have done well to secure the lead today but they have been helped by a West Brom performance which has lacked composure and a cutting edge.
35' MCAULEY AND ANICHEBE CLOSE
That's the closest West Brom have come for a while. Chris Brunt floats a corner kick into the Norwich penalty area and Gareth McAuley attacks it well at the far post. However, he can't get enough on his header and the ball comes off the side of his skull and goes out for a goal kick. Just after, a vicious Victor Anichebe drive from the edge of the penalty area forces John Ruddy to tip over.
31' CANARIES CHANCES
Johan Elmander wriggles clear of his marker to get a shot in at goal from the edge of the West Brom penalty area, but it's blocked by Liam Ridgewell as the ball squirms out for a corner kick. The resulting set piece comes to nothing, but just after Nathan Redmond goes close, bending the ball just wide from 20 yards out.
29' BRUNT BOOKED
Ouch. Chris Brunt becomes the first player to go into the book today after piling into Nathan Redmond on the halfway line. It was a show of frustration from the Baggies winger.
27' REDMOND FREE-KICK
Leroy Fer has been at the centre of everything Norwich have done well so far today, going forward and defensively. The Dutchman wins a foul after Billy Jones trips him, giving the Canaries a free-kick 35 yards from the West Brom goal. Nathan Redmond takes it but his dipping, bouncing effort is grasped by Boaz Myhill.
25' NORWICH KEEP BALL
Norwich have taken the sting out of West Brom's play in the minutes after the goal by holding onto the ball for a sustained period of possession. There's a long way to go, but if the Canaries can hold on for the win today, it would relieve much of the pressure on manager Chris Hughton.
22' ANICHEBE HEADER
West Brom are creating chances. Morgan Amalfitano is given far too much time to cross the ball in from the right flank, and his delivery picks out the head of Victor Anichebe in the middle. The striker's header is downwards but straight at John Ruddy.
19' MULUMBU STRIKE
That's a fine effort by Youssouf Mulumbu. The midfielder swaps passes with Stephane Sessegnon on the edge of the box before smashing at goal from the edge of the penalty area. John Ruddy does well to hold onto the ball, with Victor Anichebe lurking in hope of a chance from a potential rebound.
17' SLALOMING SESSEGNON
West Brom nearly respond immediately as Stephane Sessegnon embarks on a slaloming run inside the final third, but his eventual poked finish is blocked by Michael Turner.
15' HOOPER SCORES
Against the run of play, Norwich have the lead. Leroy Fer slips a precise pass through the West Brom defence for Gary Hooper, who's going away from goal inside the penalty box, but still manages to smash a well-directed finish into the bottom right-hand corner of Boaz Myhill's goal.
14' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's in! Gary Hooper scores for Norwich!
12' BAGGIES RIGHT-SIDED THREAT
A pensive Steve Clarke sits arms folded on the West Brom bench as his side continue to take the game to the visitors in the opening exchanges. Billy Jones' drilled cross looks dangerous again but Sebastien Bassong is once again there at the near post to drive the ball out of play. Just after, Morgan Amalfitano's cross just goes over Victor Anichebe's head. Jones and Amalfitano are looking bright for the hosts.
9' BAGGIES PRESSURE
Stephane Sessegnon slips Billy Jones in behind the Norwich defence but Sebastien Bassong blocks his pull-back. Chris Brunt's delivery again looks dangerous but the visitors clear. The Baggies come straight back at them but Liam Ridgewell's lofted cross has too much on it for Victor Anichebe.
7' RUDDY FLAPS
Chris Brunt has West Brom's first shot of the game but the ball deflects off Michael Turner and goes for a Baggies corner. The winger whips the set piece into the penalty area and John Ruddy can only flap at it as the ball hits the back of Gareth McAuley's head and bounces wide.
5' LUGANO SMASH
Diego Lugano takes no time to endear himself to home supporters, smashing into the back of Johan Elmander and sending the Swedish forward flying. There's no card for the centre back but he'll need to be careful as Mark Clattenburg is unlikely to allow too much of that recklessness.
3' CANARIES KEEN TO BOUNCE BACK
Norwich have started on top and they will be keen to get a result today to banish memories from their thrashing at Anfield in midweek. Nathan Redmond gets down the right flank but his low cross is collected at the near post by Boaz Myhill.
1' WE'RE OFF
The two teams are out on the pitch at The Hawthorns and Mark Clattenburg blows his whistle to get us underway. Both sides are in their usual home colours, with West Brom in blue and white stripes and Norwich clad in yellow and green. Can one of these clubs grab a win to help remedy their recent inconsistent form?
0' CONFIRMED STARTING LINE-UPS
Both teams choose to make changes from the line-ups that lost to Manchester City and Liverpool respectively in midweek. West Brom make five changes, with Billy Jones, Diego Lugano, Youssouf Mulumbu, Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe coming into the starting XI as Stephen Reid, James Morrison, Shane Long, Saido Berahino and the suspended Jonas Olsson drop out. Norwich have dropped Russell Martin and Ryan Bennett, with Stephen Whittaker and Michael Turner coming back into the Canaries' line-up. Gary Hooper is also restored to the starting XI at the expense of Wes Hoolahan.
0' STAY TUNED
Stay tuned for live updates from this afternoon's Premier League clash at The Hawthorns. Bradley King will be here for a 3pm kick-off.
0' REF WATCH
Referee Mark Clattenburg is the man in the middle for this afternoon's Premier League fixture. The 38-year-old has taken charge of nine top division matches this season - just two of which have finished in home victories. He'll be assisted by Simon Beck and Stephen Child, while the fourth official is Mark Haywood.
0' HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD
The recent head-to-head record between West Brom and Norwich has a very symmetrical look, with both sides having five wins apiece from the last ten times they've met. Indeed, the last time the Baggies and the Canaries were forced to share the spoils was back in October 2004 - a campaign where Norwich were ultimately relegated to the second tier of English football. There was a win each last season, with West Brom winning 2-1 at The Hawthorns before the Canaries gained revenge, thrashing Steve Clarke's side 4-0 at Carrow Road in May.
0' NORWICH CITY TEAM NEWS
This weekend's match comes too soon for Norwich striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who may return to the Canaries squad for the fixture with Swansea City next week. As a result, Gary Hooper is likely to carry on his recent encouraging form at the top of the Norwich attack, with Johan Elmander operating just behind him. The visitors have no new injury concerns but the treatment room at Carrow Road is a busy one, as Robert Snodgrass, Anthony Pilkington, Alexander Tettey and Elliott Bennett all nurse various injuries of their own.
0' WEST BROMWICH ALBION TEAM NEWS
West Brom will be forced into a change in defence, with Jonas Olsson ruled out through suspension. The Swedish centre back collected his fifth booking of the season in the defeat to Manchester City in midweek and is likely to be replaced in the starting XI by the experienced Uruguayan defender Diego Lugano. Youssouf Mulumbu will renew his midfield partnership with Claudio Yacob, though, after serving his own ban, while Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe could tempt Steve Clarke to freshen his side's attacking make-up. Boaz Myhill will continue to deputise between the posts but Ben Foster is close to a return from his foot injury.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
Out-of-form West Bromwich Albion will be keen to avoid a third straight defeat on Saturday afternoon as inconsistent Norwich City visit The Hawthorns. The Baggies are yet to settle into their rhythm this season and are down in 13th place in the Premier League after a four-match winless run. Scoring goals hasn't been a problem, though - Steve Clarke's men have found the net seven times in their current winless run - and the hosts may take heart from that as they welcome the leaky Canaries. Chris Hughton's side were on the end of a top class Luis Suarez performance in midweek - their fifth straight defeat on the road in all competitions, during which they've shipped an eye-watering 22 goals.
