Liverpool vs. Cardiff City
Minute Commentary
90' FT: LIVERPOOL 3 CARDIFF 1
Liverpool go top of the Premier League after a comfortable home win inspired by the unstoppable Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan celebrated signing a new contract with an imperious first-half display, scoring twice to take his tally for the season to 19 and creating another one for Raheem Sterling. The Reds could easily have been at least five goals to the good at the break, but Cardiff refused to buckle and gave their beleaguered manager Malky Mackay something to cheer on 58 minutes when the unmarked Jordan Mutch headed home a Peter Whittingham free-kick. The Reds will be top over Christmas if Arsenal fail to beat Chelsea on Monday night.
90' SUAREZ DENIED
Suarez is denied his hat-trick, Marshall making a good save low down after Mutch had originally given the ball away.
87' GLANCING HEADER
Noone has impressed for the visitors today. He curls in a teasing cross from the right that Caulker meets with a glancing header that isn't far away from its intended target.
84' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Daniel Agger replaces Coutinho as Liverpool look to protect their lead.
83' CURLING SHOT WIDE
Suarez collects a pass from Henderson on the edge of the area, but this time the curling shot does not bend back inside the post.
82' WELL WIDE FROM NOONE
Former Liverpool schoolboy Noone tries a selfish long-range shot that draws howls of derision from the home fans. It would have flown into the top corner in his dreams last night.
80' CARDIFF SUBSTITUTION
Cardiff's final change sees Andreas Cornelius replace Aron Gunnarsson.
79' HEADER OVER THE BAR
Allen is allowed a free header at a Coutinho corner from the right and heads over the bar from close range.
78' DODGY DEFENDING
Judging by the way he marks at corners, a promising career as a wrestler awaits Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel should he decide to pack in football.
76' OFF THE POST
Sterling is clean through and fails to round Marshall before Suarez hits the outside of the post from a narrow angle on the follow-up.
73' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Raheem Sterling goes in with a full-blooded challenge on Whittingham and is cautioned by Mr Probert.
71' CARDIFF STILL BELIEVE
Cardiff believe they can still snatch something from this game. The confidence has flooded back and a left-wing corner causes consternation in the Liverpool defence before being cleared.
69' SUAREZ STRIKE BLOCKED
Suarez has seen little of the ball in this second half. Finally a pass comes his way and he cuts inside before hitting a fierce shot that is deflected to safety off Turner.
67' MIGNOLET BEING KEPT BUSY
Turner rises above Sakho to meet another Whittingham free-kick and his looping header is plucked from the air by Mignolet just under his own crossbar.
64' GOAL DROUGHT IS OVER
Cardiff had gone 498 minutes without an away goal in the Premier League, Mutch netting the first for the Bluebirds since he netted early on at Chelsea.
62' MUTCH HEADS OVER
A corner from the left drops nicely to Mutch, who heads over from a great position only six yards out.
59' GOAL DETAILS
Mutch was left totally unmarked at the far post, heading home a free-kick delivered from the right by Whittingham. Liverpool's marking there was incredibly poor.
58' GOAL: LIVERPOOL 3 CARDIFF 1
Jordon Mutch pulls one back for Cardiff.
57' JOHNSON NOW ON THE LEFT
Martin Kelly has slotted in at right-back for Liverpool, with Johnson switching to the left side of defence.
56' CHANGES FOR BOTH SIDES
Kim Bo-Kyung replaces Odemwingie for Cardiff and Fraizer Campbell takes the place of Medel in a double switch. Jon Flanagan makes way for Martin Kelly for Liverpool.
54' CHANCES KEEP COMING
Liverpool have a great opportunity to add a fourth, but Allen is unable to control a cross from the left that fell to him inside the area.
51' COUTINHO SHOOTS WIDE
Coutinho runs from deep and switches the ball on to his right foot before shooting just wide of the post from outside the area.
48' PRESSURE CONTINUES
Liverpool are rampant here. A Flanagan cross just fails to reach Allen in the centre before Sterling lashes a shot wide.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Cardiff get the second half under way.
45' HT: LIVERPOOL 3 CARDIFF 0
Liverpool lead at the break, thanks to an 18th and 19th league goal of the season from Luis Suarez and another from Raheem Sterling. The Uruguayan netted with a sweet right-foot volley on 25 minutes, with Jordan Henderson supplying the assist. The home side almost doubled their advantage through Philippe Coutinho, who hit the post and Jon Flanagan, whose effort was cleared off the line. Sterling did net a second just before the interval, with Suarez supplying the assist, before the scoring machine netted his tenth in the last four games with a wonderful curling shot. Cardiff started brightly, with Craig Noone forcing Simon Mognolet into a fine save. It's been one-way traffic coming the other way since.
45' GOAL: LIVERPOOL 3 CARDIFF 0
Luis Suarez scores a stunning third for the Reds, playing a one-two with Henderson before curling a delightful shot just inside the post.
44' SUAREZ SHOOTS WIDE
Liverpool want a third, but Suarez drags his shot wide.
43' GOAL: LIVERPOOL 2 CARDIFF 0
Raheem Sterling nets a second for Liverpool, passing the ball into the net after being unselfishly set up by Suarez.
42' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Skrtel is cautioned for a poor tackle on Mutch.
41' CARDIFF ALL AT SEA
Sterling sneaks in behind the snoozing Cardiff left-back Taylor, but then overruns the ball and a promising position is gone.
39' SHOT WELL SAVED
Suarez puts Sterling clear down the right. The angle is narrow and his low drive is blocked well by Marshall.
38' CLEARED OFF THE LINE
Johnson's cross from the right is just out of the reach of Suarez. Flanagan follows up and his effort is just cleared off the line in time.
36' SKRTEL HEADS OVER
Flanagan sends over an excellent cross from the left and the unmarked Skrtel should have done better than bullet a header over the crossbar.
34' COUTINHO HITS THE POST
Coutinho collects a short corner from Suarez and jinks past Medel before whipping in a low shot that comes back off the foot of the near post.
31' CAULKER WANTS A PENALTY
Cardiff are not far away from a leveller. A Whittingham free-kick looks for Caulker, who appeared to be impeded by Skrtel. You don't get penalties in front of the Kop unless the offence is punishable by death.
29' SO TOUGH ON CARDIFF
What more could Cardiff possibly do? They have not put a foot wrong so far yet they find themselves trailing. Let's go with the flow and blame Malky Mackay. It's all his fault. The man has to go.
26' GOAL DETAILS
Who else could it possibly be? Allen fed Henderson on the left, and Suarez, who had had an earlier hand in the move, volleyed the resulting cross into the bottom left corner. Quality goal.
25' GOAL: LIVERPOOL 1 CARDIFF 0
Luis Suarez gives Liverpool the lead.
24' SO STRONG AT HOME
A win for Liverpool today would be their sixth in a row at Anfield. They're no stranger to doing well on their own patch, though: they ran off eight straight wins between December 2009 and March 2010.
22' BLUES WELL DISCIPLINED
Whenever a Liverpool midfielder looks up it appears to be three attacking players ahead of him surrounded by eight blue shirts. Space is at a premium around the Cardiff penalty area.
20' SHOT CHARGED DOWN
Sterling lets fly with a rasping shot that is charged down by a defender. Cardiff are still managing to keep the home side at arm's length. For now.
18' DEFLECTED JUST WIDE
Coutinho threads a pass through to Suarez, who side-steps his man and sees his 20-yard shot deflected just wide.
16' MUTCH HEADS WIDE
Mutch heads wide from the resulting corner. He was unmarked there. Correction, Henderson was marking him but he did a very poor job.
15' FINE SAVE FROM MIGNOLET
The first real chance falls Cardiff's way. Noone collects a pass from Whittingham and his left-foot curler is clawed away by Mignolet.
14' CARELESS IN DEFENCE
Liverpool give the ball away trying to be clever and pass their way out of trouble deep in their own half. Sakho concedes possession, but a Mutch snap-shot is way off the mark.
12' DOMINATING POSSESSION
Liverpool are seeing a lot of the ball in the opening skirmishes, but their final pass is just letting them down. Cardiff will be happy how they've started.
9' DIGNIFIED MACKAY
You have to admire the dignified way Malky Mackay has dealt with all this. He is even sporting the club's official red and black tie. I have to say I would have been tempted to wear something with a bit of blue in it.
7' GETTING CLOSER
Liverpool break quickly from their own half. Sterling chases a long ball and tees up Suarez, whose initial shot is blocked. Coutinho puts the follow-up wide of the post.
5' ONE MAN TEAM
Suarez's personal tally of 17 goals this season is more than half of the teams in the Premier League - and he's only played 11 games!
4' TAN IS HERE TODAY
Cardiff owner Vincent Tan is in the directors' box here at Anfield today. He's a brave man, because there a plenty of banners telling him he isn't welcome.
2' ONLY JUST WIDE
Liverpool are straight on the attack and two loose balls just fail to fall the way of Henderson before Suarez volleys just wide.
1' HERE WE GO
Liverpool kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS
Liverpool name the same team that hammered Spurs. Cardiff make one change to the side that beat West Brom, with Aron Gunnarsson coming in for Fraizer Campbell, who drops to the bench.

0' PREVIEW
Liverpool welcome Cardiff City to Anfield on Saturday lunchtime knowing that victory will take them top of the Premier League. Looking down from the top of the pile would be nothing new to long-term supporters of the 18-time league champions, but to newer fans this would be a significant step. Liverpool last topped the table on Aug. 28, 2011, only three games into the season, although some of their rivals did have a game in hand. Prior to that, it was back in the May 2008-09 where they briefly led coming down the stretch before being overhauled by Manchester United. Being top at Christmas has led to good things in recent years: only twice in the past nine seasons has the team on top going into the festive period not lifted the title come May. Having said that, the Reds have been top at Christmas twice in the Premier League era and gone on to finish second and fourth! There are a couple of interesting sub-plots to this one. Most notably, will Malky Mackay still be in charge of Cardiff come game time? Reports in the English media on Friday suggested that owner Vincent Tan had issued an ultimatum telling his manager to resign or face the sack. Mackay flew with the team to Merseyside and has the backing of Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, who accused Tan of knowing “absolutely nothing about football”. Also, it is the first time the sides have met since that wonderful Carling Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Feb. 2012 which Liverpool edged 3-2 on penalties against the then second-tier Bluebirds after a pulsating 2-2 draw after extra time. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
There's only one player to talk about today, Liverpool's goal-scoring machine Luis Suarez, who has netted an astonishing 17 Premier League goals in 11 appearances this season, with 11 of those coming in his last six games and eight in his last three. Not only has the Uruguayan netted in each of his five matches at Anfield this season, in only one of those games has he not scored more than once. He is a frightening proposition for defenders, and although Cardiff don't exactly leak goals, if they can shut out Suarez they can consider it a job very well done. Suarez signed a long-term contract extension on Friday, making him Liverpool's highest-paid player, so he's not short of goals or cash.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
As surprising as it might sound, it's Cardiff who have dominated the head-to-head meetings in the league between the sides with 16 wins to eight by Liverpool and two games being drawn. That's partly because they have not met in league since 1959-60 in an era just before Liverpool started getting good. Cardiff did the double that season, winning 3-2 at Ninian Park and 4-0 at Anfield and have won the last five meetings in the league. Even at Anfield, Cardiff have the edge (there are not many teams that can say that). They have seven wins to six by Liverpool and there has yet to be a draw. Liverpool's last league win over Cardiff came in August 1957, though they did win the Carling Cup on penalties in February 2012.
0' FORM GUIDE
Liverpool start the day in second place with 33 points from 16 games, ahead of Chelsea on goal difference and two points behind leaders Arsenal. They have won seven of their eight matches at Anfield, the one blemish being a 1-0 defeat to Southampton in September. The Reds are the second-highest scores at home in the top-flight, behind only Manchester City. Cardiff currently sit 15th with 17 points from 16 games, four clear of the relegation zone. They have won one of eight on the road, at West Ham on the opening day of the season. Overall, Liverpool are looking for a fourth successive league win, while Cardiff's 1-0 win over West Brom last time out was their first victory in seven attempts.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Liverpool will again be missing captain Steven Gerrard (hamstring), Daniel Sturridge (ankle) and Jose Enrique (knee) and it is hard to imagine many changes from the side that dismantled Tottenham last weekend. Cardiff have no new injury worries and Kirkby-born Craig Noone will be itching to get a start at the club where he was a schoolboy footballer for two years from the age of nine. It remains to be seen whether another Anfield old boy, Craig Bellamy, is fit enough after a hamstring injury to make the matchday 18.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Lee Probert, who was appointed to the Select Group Referees List in 2007. The Gloucestershire official has shown just seven yellow cards in his seven Premier League outings so far this season, sending off one player, Sunderland defender John O'Shea in the defeat at Crystal Palace back in August. That's a far cry from last season, when he administered 79 cautions and produced five red cards. Probert's assistants today are Ron Ganfield and Mark Scholes, while Phil Dowd is the fourth official.
