Arsenal vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
It ends in stalemate at the Emirates Stadium between London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea in driving rain. Chances were few and far between in the clash which means Arsene Wenger's men move up to second in the Premier League table while the Blues move up to fourth. In the first-half Frank Lampard crashed his volley off the underside of the crossbar from Eden Hazard's clever pass. Willian also saw his right-foot curler saved by Wojciech Szczesny while there were strong penalty claims at the other end when Theo Walcott went over Brazilian Willian's firm challenge. The Gunners had the better of the second 45 minutes. Olivier Giroud sliced just wide before John Terry's heroic block kept out the Frenchman's close-range shot. Deep in stoppage time Bacary Sagna's goalbound header was cleared off the line by Cesar Azpilicueta.
It ends in stalemate at the Emirates Stadium between London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.
Chelsea win a free-kick about 27 yards from goal and David Luiz lines it up. The Brazilian smashes his effort straight into the wall though.
There are THREE added minutes at the Emirates Stadium and Arsenal win a corner. The ball in is headed towards goal by Bacary Sagna but Cesar Azpilicueta is standing on the line to make the all-important clearance.
The rain is coming down even heavier now and that is slowing down the ball. Olivier Giroud's touch lets him down in the middle of the park.
Jose Mourinho makes a really defensive change this time by sending on David Luiz for Fernando Torres.
Tomas Rosicky sends Kieran Gibbs away down the left and his pull-back finds Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman's shot seems to be goalbound, but John Terry throws his body in the way to make a heroic block.
Kieran Gibbs' left-footed cross is struck far too hard and it drifts over the crossbar for a goal-kick. Chelsea's away form is improving - winning three of their last five away from the Bridge. They're doing a solid job containing Arsenal tonight with the clock ticking down.
Arsenal have not had one shot on target in this match so far. But they finally create a great chance as Aaron Ramsey's dinked pass finds Olivier Giroud but the Frenchman slices through the ball and sends it wide of Petr Cech's near post. That was the best chance of the game!
Gary Cahill makes a hurried clearance as Jose Mourinho makes another change. Oscar comes on for Willian. Still no sign of an Arsenal change.
Aaron Ramsey puts the ball out after an injury to Ramires and the Welshman gets berated by his own supporters and team-mates.
Andre Schurrle comes on for Eden Hazard as Jose Mourinho makes a defensive change of sorts although the German can pack a punch with his boot.
Referee Mike Dean is the calmest man on the pitch after Tomas Rosicky's sliding tackle on - yep, you've guessed it - Branislav Ivanovic. The Czech midfielder is shown a yellow card.
Mesut Ozil and Branislav Ivanovic have words and then both sets of players get involved. There is a bit of pushing and shoving. The decision is a throw to Arsenal.
Fernando Torres chests the ball down for Frank Lampard to hit from 25 yards and although he catches the ball well, Petr Cech gets everything behind it.
The man in the middle has done well to keep these difficult conditions in mind when a few sliding challenges have gone in. Oscar is warming up on the near side as Theo Walcott is shown a yellow card for another late sliding challenge, this time on the flying full-back Cesar Azpilicueta.
Ramires flies in on Mikel Arteta dangerously. The Chelsea midfielder did have his studs showing and he is booked by referee Mike Dean.
Tim Sherwood has been announced as head coach of Tottenham until the end of the season, which will cheer up these Arsenal fans. There's an important FA Cup third-round meeting to come between the north London rivals in January. Theo Walcott gives chase and that forces Cesar Azpilicueta into a desperate clearance.
We now have a rare drop-ball in the middle of the park which Frank Lampard wins and Fernando Torres goes for goal from 40 yards, but it was always heading well wide.
The ball boy slips over on the far side of the field and that's one of the most entertaining things we've seen this evening. Petr Cech's quick throw sends Chelsea away but Eden Hazard's first touch lets him down in the area.
Arsenal step up the pace through Tomas Rosicky, but his shot is blocked and then at the other end Willian's cross is headed away on the stretch by John Terry.
There have been no changes to either team at the break. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger only just makes his way out onto the pitch. Olivier Giroud wins a corner off defender Gary Cahill for the hosts fifth of the game. The delivery bounces up into the air and Petr Cech claims an easy catch.
The Gunners had been top of the Premier League table for 13 straight matches until Liverpool went top over the weekend. It's a massive 45 minutes ahead for Arsene Wenger's side. Let's hope this match will finally spark to life!
With so much at stake at the Emirates Stadium, it's no surprise that it's goalless at the break between London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. The Blues created the best chance of the half when Frank Lampard crashed his volley off the underside of the crossbar from Eden Hazard's clever pass. Willian also saw his right-foot curler saved by Wojciech Szczesny while there were strong penalty claims at the other end when Theo Walcott went over Brazilian Willian's firm challenge, but referee Mike Dean waved play to continue. The Blues have managed just one clean sheet in their last 11 Premier League matches while the Gunners have lost just one of their last 17 Premier League home matches, so expect goals in the second-period.
It remains goalless in this huge Premier League clash between Arsenal and Chelsea at a wet and windy Emirates Stadium.
Theo Walcott's right-footed delivery from the corner falls to Aaron Ramsey, but he hands the ball to Chelsea who break in numbers. Eden Hazard finds Willian down the left, but his attempted curler into the far corner is easily handled by Wojciech Szczesny.
There is no doubt that Chelsea have had the better of this game in the opening first-half. They're controlling the game by frustrating Arsenal. Jose Mourinho has got his team in a nice shape. Wojciech Szczesny comes to the edge of the area to pluck the ball out of the air, but the wind very nearly carried it over him for a second there. A worrying moment for the Poland international.
It was nice to see Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho point at his watch at the fourth official asking him to check his watch to see if it had crossed the line in jest. John Obi Mikel and Mikel Arteta go into a crunching tackle in the middle of the park. The Spaniard comes off worse and then Theo Walcott claims he is felled in the box from Willian, but Mike Dean says no way.
Chelsea come within inches of taking a shock lead at the Emirates. Frank Lampard crashes his volley off the underside of the crossbar from Eden Hazard's clever pass, but there was no way it bounced over the line and Arsenal manage to clear the ball.
Arsenal has failed to win their last four meetings with Chelsea in all competitions, and have just two wins over the Blues in their last 11 meetings, losing eight of those. It's a bit of an Indian Sign for Jose Mourinho's men isn't it! The Portuguese boss is gesturing from the sidelines again.
Willian's right-footed cross from the edge of the area is headed powerfully over the crossbar by Ramires. That's Chelsea's first real opportunity in front of the Arsenal goal, but it was a difficult chance to score from.
Bacary Sagna's right-footed delivery is superbly defended by Gary Cahill. The resulting corner is cleared but then the ball falls to Olivier Giroud from a tight angle and his cut back is dealt with by John Terry as the pressure intensifies.
Frank Lampard brings down Mesut Ozil about 30 yards from goal. The little dink into the area by the Germany international skips off the turf and away for a goal kick.
Aaron Ramsey is forced to clear away for a Chelsea corner. There is a foul in the box from John Obi Mikel, who nudged goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Referee Mike Dean did well to spot that. The rain is blowing into Arsenal's players' faces as they look to attack through Mikel Arteta.
Fernando Torres feels he is unfairly blocked off the ball by Per Mertesacker and lets referee Mike Dean know what he thinks about it.
Theo Walcott fails to make the most of a half chance in the area. That was the first bit of action which got the Emirates home crowd on their feet. Gary Cahill deals with the situation and then John Terry is called into action by heading the ball a prodigious distance.
Chelsea have kept five clean sheets in their last nine meetings with the Gunners in all competitions, and they're looking pretty solid at the start of this clash, sitting back and soaking up all the pressure.
Cesar Azpilicueta dives into Aaron Ramsey and could have easily been shown a yellow card for that challenge but referee Mike Dean just hands out a firm warning. Now Bacary Sagna takes a solid hit from Frank Lampard right in front of Jose Mourinho, who gestures to Dean that his man got the ball.
Fernando Torres flies over Per Mertesacker's challenge, but referee Mike Dean allows play to continue. It's started to rain heavily at the Emirates again as Arsenal win a corner. Theo Walcott's cross is swung over, but it's too hard and it drifts away for a goal kick.
Chelsea are keeping the ball short and passing it about waiting for an opening. Cesar Azpilicueta is caught in an offside position as Arsenal defenders stop. Bacary Sagna loses control of a simple pass and now it's a throw to the visitors from west London.
Kieran Gibbs' poor back pass goes out for an early Chelsea corner, but they fail to exploit the situation and the Gunners clear their lines. The pace is pretty relentless as you might expect with so much riding on this game.
We're lucky the drainage system is working so well at the Emirates after all that rain in London today. It's easily the best pitch in the Premier League. Arsenal have set up in a 4-5-1 system with Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud working in tandem. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has set up with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Fernando Torres the lone man.
Here we go then at the Emirates Stadium, which is full to capacity for this big top of the table clash. The pitch is in pristine condition although it's been raining non stop in north London today. The home team are wearing their traditional number while Chelsea - followed by large number of away supporters in the far corner - are in their all-blue kit. Both sets of supporters are making plenty of noise.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has recalled Tomas Rosicky and Thomas Vermaelen. The Gunners continue with their trusted 4-5-1 formation, as Mikel Arteta, Rosicky, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, and Theo Walcott provide support for lone striker Olivier Giroud.
John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic return to the Blues starting line-up tonight. The club skipper was rested for the midweek Capital One Cup defeat to Sunderland, but is restored to the defence with David Luiz making way. Right-back Ivanovic replaces Ashley Cole as Cesar Azpilicueta reverts to left-back. Fernando Torres returns up front, while Eden Hazard, Frank Lampard, Willian and Ramires all start.
Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Rosicky, Arteta, Walcott, Ozil, Ramsey, Giroud. SUBSTITUTES: Podolski, Monreal, Cazorla, Flamini, Fabianski, Bendtner, Jenkinson.
Cech, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta, Mikel, Lampard, Ramires, Willian, Hazard, Torres. SUBSTITUTES: Cole, Luiz, Mata, Oscar, Schurrle, Schwarzer, Eto'o.
Arsenal head into Monday night's crunch clash against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium knowing a win would take them five points clear of their London rivals and back to the top of the Premier League standings above Liverpool. However, the Blues have an excellent record against their opponents having won eight and lost just two of the last 11 meetings in all competitions and three points will leapfrog them from fifth to joint top. The Gunners head into the game looking for a response after their 6-3 drubbing at Manchester City last weekend to avoid potentially being pushed down into fourth place for Christmas. They do boast an impressive home record having lost just one of their last 17 top flight home matches, recording an impressive 12 wins and four draws in that streak. They've outscored opponents 38-14 in those contests. Jose Mourinho's side will be aiming to bounce back from their midweek Capital One Cup exit at the hands of Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. They have won four of their last five Premier League matches though and have scored in 11 of their last 13 matches at Arsenal. If both teams play with their usual swagger, this could end up being a potential classic. By @RazMirza
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists morale in the camp is good ahead of this crucial top of the table fixture. The Gunners have not won any of their last three matches in all competitions, but the Frenchman insists his side will be looking to respond tonight. "They (recent results) have been disappointing for us," Wenger said. "But I don't think they have affected the morale. We have made good results until now because we have a good solidarity level and a good togetherness in the squad, and I don't see any sign of that dropping. I think even more that the players are focused to respond. It can happen in a season when sometimes you have a bit of a weaker period. How you respond to this kind of problem is what matters."
Arsenal will be without midfielder Jack Wilshere, who starts a two-match suspension. Centre-half Laurent Koscielny is a major doubt after suffering a gash to his knee in the 6-3 defeat at Manchester City, but German forward Lukas Podolski is available again after three months out with a hamstring injury.
Jose Mourinho has played down the 2-0 Capital One Cup victory earlier this season during this pre-match press conference on Friday saying it has no significance ahead of tonight's game. "Different competitions, different motivations, different responsibilities, different players in some cases," he said. "Still Arsenal, still Chelsea, still a London derby, plus the fact that the first is playing the third, or the second, whatever you prefer. (It is a) big match for sure. It's a pity that it's not tomorrow (Saturday) because I'm waiting for the game and I'm ready to play the game and I want very much to play the game."
Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole is to return to the substitutes' bench at best for this crunch clash at his former club. With Branislav Ivanovic available after serving a one-match ban, the Serbia defender will return at right-back, with Cesar Azpilicueta reverting to left-back and Cole dropping out of the side. Captain John Terry will also return, but Michael Essien is banned after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season at Sunderland and his fellow midfielder Marco van Ginkel (knee) is a long-term absentee.
PER MERTESACKER v FERNANDO TORRES: Giant defender Mertesacker has been a consistent performer in the Gunners' rearguard this season, and following injury to Laurent Koscielny will be the man likely charged to keep close tabs on Blues striker Torres, who was back among the goals when scoring in the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend. MESUT OZIL v FRANK LAMPARD: Arsenal's club-record signing Ozil has struggled for consistency since his £43million move from Real Madrid, but the German playmaker remains the main conduit through Arsenal's potent midfield. However, up against Lampard, he faces a player immersed in the experience of Premier League big encounters, someone who thrives on them and also with an eye for goal. OLIVIER GIROUD v JOHN TERRY: Giroud has grown in stature this season, with 10 goals at the spearhead of the Arsenal attack, but despite a high work-rate, the France forward has looked tired in recent weeks. Terry was rested for the midweek Capital One Cup defeat at Sunderland and has been a consistent performer in the Premier League following Jose Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge, so will relish the chance to shackle Giroud's physical presence in the penalty box.
The referee in charge of this encounter is 45-year-old Mike Dean. He has taken charge of 15 matches this season showing 48 yellow cards and three reds. His assistants down the touchline are Jake Collin and John Brooks, while the fourth official is Jon Moss.
