Hull City Tigers vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' HEARTBREAK FOR HULL
An own goal from poor James Chester proved to be the winner for Manchester United, who beat Hull City 3-2 at the KC Stadium. The centre back, who had scored the opener, headed Ashley Young's 66th-minute cross into his own net at the near post under pressure from Wayne Rooney. Chester's volleyed close-range strike from a corner had given Hull a fourth-minute lead, and the Tigers were in dreamland soon after that when Jonny Evans diverted David Meyler's weak shot past David de Gea. Wayne Rooney, heckles up, then took charge of the situation, first with a free kick that was headed home by Chris Smalling, and then with a 20-yard wonder volley that found the top corner. Both sides battled hard after that, and Alex Bruce hit the bar for the hosts, before Chester's unfortunate intervention gave United the impetus. David Moyes' side have now won their last three Barclays Premier League games; watch out everybody else.
90' FULL TIME HULL CITY 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 3
There's time for one more chance for the Tigers as Alex Bruce sweeps a knockdown wide of the goal from inside the box, but that really is it this time as the final whistle blows. Manchester United have beaten Hull by three goals to two.
90' LAST CHANCE
For a moment it looks like Hull are set to score as George Boyd passes through to James Chester in acres of space. The defender tries to poke the ball into the net, only for David de Gea to spread himself and knock it wide. That must be it now.
90' RED CARD
Antonio Valencia has a rush of blood to the head as a free kick goes the opposite way, the winger earning a second yellow card for petulantly kicking the ball away. David Moyes doesn't even look at his player as he jogs down the tunnel.
88' DODGY KEEPING
David de Gea causes panic on the United bench as the Spaniard comes for a long ball and misses it with a worrying flap. For a moment the goal is left unguarded, but United manage to get enough defenders back to snuff out the chance.
87' LOW POWER
Huddlestone's diagonal ball to the right is controlled by Sagbo, who is fortunate to wriggle past Patrice Evra. The Ivorian crosses to Danny Graham, who can't generate enough power in his header to trouble the goalkeeper.
84' DE GEA ON HAND
A long, raking pass from Huddlestone drops onto the head of Chester, who had run a long way up the pitch, The centre back plants the ball into the middle of the box, but De Gea plucks it out of the sky.
81' STAUNCH SUPPORT
Hull may be trailing, but their supporters haven't lost faith. They're 100% behind their players, who have put on a fantastic show today against much more high-profile opponents.
78' SUBSTITUTION
The away fans cheer as Michael Carrick, who has missed the last nine games with an Achilles problem, replaces Young.
77' SLOPPY PASSING
Another loose pass sees Robert Koren gift the ball to Hernandez, who passes to his left for Danny Welbeck. The forward reaches the box, but loses the ball through a spot of over-elaboration. Steve Bruce is hopping mad on the sidelines.
74' DODGY BACKPASS
Alex Bruce nearly sells Steve Harper short with a very dodgy backpass that almost allows Hernandez a clear run at goal. The defender is in luck because his goalkeeper was a long way off his line to start with, meaning he's able to get there before the Mexico striker.
73' SUBSTITUTION
Figueroa makes way for George Boyd in Hull's third and final change.
73' ROONEY OFF TARGET
Rooney steps up to take the set-piece, curling it over the wall and a yard wide of the right-hand post.
72' YELLOW CARD
Alex Bruce's late tackle on Welbeck sparks a mini-confrontation between the two sides, but Michael Oliver is able to defuse the situation quickly with a booking for Bruce.
69' UNLUCKY TIGERS
That goal was harsh on the hosts, who have looked dangerous themselves in this second half. There's still time for them to pull it back.
66' GOAL!!! MANCHESTER UNITED
Ashley Young receives the ball on the right wing and finds space to cross to the near post. JAMES CHESTER, mindful of Wayne Rooney on his shoulder, gets his head to the ball but succeeds only in hitting the back of his own net. That's so unfair on Chester, who's had a great game.
63' OFF THE BAR
Huddlestone belts a shot towards goal from the edge of the box that's deflected wide via Evra. Huddlestone takes the corner himself, and Alex Bruce hangs in the air to head against the underside of the bar. The crowd think it's a goal, but no beep in the referee's ear means the scores remain level.
62' SUBSTITUTION
Fletcher is given a standing ovation as he leaves the field, to be replaced by Javier Hernandez.
61' YELLOW CARD
Valencia grabs at Sagbo's knee as he stumbles to bring the speeding forward to earth. The Ecuadorian is shown a yellow card, meaning he'll be suspended for the game against Norwich.
59' EVRA HURT
Evra twists his knee as the left back lands awkwardly following an aerial contest with Graham, and is forced to leave the pitch to receive treatment. Not one to duck out, he's back in the action almost immediately.
57' FLETCHER'S BEST CHRISTMAS EVER
Whatever the result here, the heartwarming Christmas story of the day will surely be that of Darren Fletcher. The midfielder, having struggled with illness for so long, hasn't looked out of place this afternoon. That fact alone speaks volumes for his ability.
54' JUST WIDE FROM DAVIES
Curtis Davies charges into the box as Tom Huddlestone floats in a corner from the left. The centre back outjumps Smalling, only to flick his header narrowly wide of the far post. That was a great chance to retake the lead.
52' STRAIGHT AT THE KEEPER
Graham dribbles past two challenges on the edge of the United box and lays it off for Yannick Sagbo, who strikes a shot with real venom. It's straight at David de Gea, though, who catches the effort in two gloves.
49' NORMAL SERVICE RESUMED
David Moyes' side have started the second half as they ended the first, in control of possession but unable to work the ball past Hull's defensive brick wall.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are back out and the second half is underway. Steve Bruce has been forced into making a couple of injury-motivated changes at the break, replacing Meyler and McGregor with Robert Koren and the veteran Steve Harper.
45' ROONEY RUINS HULL PARTY
A wonder goal and an assist from Wayne Rooney put the dampeners on Hull's party after the Tigers had taken an impressive and unexpected two-goal lead. It took four minutes for the first goal to arrive, James Chester smashing home a volley after Alex Bruce had headed downwards from a corner. And it looked like becoming a nightmare day for Man United as David Meyler's weak 13th-minute shot was diverted past David de Gea by Jonny Evans. Strikes in the 20th and 26th minutes saw the visitors draw level, however; first Rooney's free kick from the right was headed home by Chris Smalling, before the England striker found the top corner with an awesome 20-yard volley. After that it was fairly even, with both sides spurning chances, and there's no telling what could happen after half time. Stay tuned for all the action.
45' HALF TIME HULL CITY 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 2
The referee's whistle brings a terrific first half to a close, with the scores tied at 2-2.
45' BRUCE BLOCKS AGAIN
Antonio Valencia finds Januzaj with a throw-in on the right, the youngster twisting past Curtis Davies to fire in a fierce effort. Again Alex Bruce is in the way to block his opponent's shot.
44' STRENGTH IN DEFENCE
Danny Welbeck is left in a heap, and not for the first time in this match, by a strong yet fair tackle from Chester. The three Hull centre backs have had a superb day so far.
41' LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON
Alex Bruce has the crowd on their feet with a pair of heroic crashing tackles that would have made his father proud. As the ball breaks forward, Graham senses the chance to go for goal and does so, the former Swansea man's shot deflecting off Jonny Evans to loop just over the crossbar.
39' CROSS ON TARGET
Space opens up for Ashley Young on the left, the forward playing in a cross that ends up more of a shot as it curls towards goal. That could have proved tricky for McGregor, but the Hull keeper is alert to the danger and steps backwards to make the catch.
37' ONE-TWO
Januzaj cuts in from the right and plays a one-two with Welbeck to go for goal from the edge of the area, but Alex Bruce is on hand to make a calm and collected block with his feet.
34' YELLOW CARD
Ahmed Elmohamady comes up with a burst of pace down the right wing to get away from Januzaj, whose sliding tackle is a millisecond too late. The Egyptian goes sprawling and Januzaj is shown a yellow card.
32' SLOW SPELL
The pace has slowed down for the first time in the game, allowing the players to catch some much-needed breath. Both sides suddenly look content to hold onto the ball.
29' HEAVY TOUCH
A lucky bounce sees the ball fall kindly for Sagbo, who tries to play in Danny Graham with a clever backheel. In the end the pass carries too much weight, allowing De Gea to come and collect.
26' GOAL!!! MANCHESTER UNITED
The Red Devils are back with a bang. WAYNE ROONEY finds Danny Welbeck with a looped pass and charges forward to pick up the latter's knockdown, controlling the ball with his thigh before flashing a super 20-yard volley into the top-left corner of the net. What a goal that was.
22' UNITED HEADS UP
The visitors look energised by that strike and go close twice inside two minutes. First Cleverley volleys wide from just inside the box, before another Rooney cross sees Danny Welbeck's header draw a top-notch save from McGregor.
20' GOAL!!! MANCHESTER UNITED
United pull one back as Wayne Rooney bends the free kick into the area from the left, and CHRIS SMALLING shows excellent strength to stand up tall and direct a header beyond the goalkeeper's grasp.
19' YELLOW CARD
Adnan Januzaj is already causing Hull problems; some quick feet from the substitute draws a late tackle from Meyler, who is subsequently booked.
17' SUBSTITUTION
Rafael finds Valencia with a cross from the right that the winger heads just wide, but the full back's game is over; he looks to have pulled his groin, and has to depart the action, with Adnan Januzaj coming on and Valencia moving to right back.
16' FRUSTRATION
The frustration is showing already as Rooney takes a wild hack at the back of Huddlestone's legs. It's hard to see how the England striker wasn't booked for that challenge.
13' GOAL!!! HULL CITY
Some skilful approach play from DAVID MEYLER sees the midfielder evade Jonny Evans and move the ball onto Yannick Sagbo. The latter looks to have taken the ball wide of goal but turns back to feed Meyler, whose weak shot from the penalty spot flicks off the unfortunate Evans' boot and over the grounded David de Gea. What a start for the Tigers.
10' NASTY COLLISION
A tasty United move sees Tom Cleverley flick a ball to Danny Welbeck, who in turn slips it into the path of Ashley Young. Allan McGregor springs from his line and takes a painful boot to the midriff from Young, who slid in but not unreasonably so. The stricken keeper gets back to his feet eventually to carry on.
7' OVER-EXUBERANCE
Hull look splendidly motivated today; they're first to every loose ball, leaving United struggling to get out of their own half. One scissor tackle from Maynor Figueroa goes a bit far, however, and the wing back is lucky not to be booked.
4' GOAL!!! HULL CITY
The hosts are in Christmas dreamland with an early strike! Huddlestone's outswinging corner from the right finds Alex Bruce, who outjumps Patrice Evra to head downwards. It's right on a plate for JAMES CHESTER, who steals away from Wayne Rooney to smash a close-range volley into the net.
2' HULL FIRST TO THREATEN
Hull threaten early on with a free kick in an advanced position on the left. Tom Huddlestone curls it into the box, where Antonio Valencia is able to head clear.
1' KICK OFF
Michael Oliver blows the whistle to get a packed Boxing Day programme underway here at the KC Stadium. If anyone's still dozing on the sofa, this might just make you sit up and take notice.
0' LINE-UPS ANNOUNCED
Hull, as expected, field an unchanged line-up, but there's a couple of surprises for United. Danny Welbeck, who has been struggling with injury, is passed fit to play, while Darren Fletcher makes a long-overdue return to the first team. It's the Scotland midfielder's first start in over a year, and there's further good news in the shape of Michael Carrick on the bench.
0' MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM NEWS
Michael Carrick and Robin van Persie again look set to miss out, the pair not quite fit following Achilles and thigh injuries respectively. Danny Welbeck is another doubt after taking a knock to the knee against West Ham, while Marouane Fellaini remains on the treatment table.
0' HULL TEAM NEWS
Steve Bruce looks likely to field an unchanged line-up for the fourth game in a row, with Robbie Brady, who is struggling with a groin problem, the only concern.
0' ONE TO WATCH
The consistently outstanding form of Tom Huddlestone this season really ought to have caught Roy Hodgson's eye, but with so much midfield competition around he won't be counting on anything. A dominant performance against a team of Man United's magnitude would certainly help the improving 26-year-old's cause.
0' OPERATION FELLAINI
Manchester United hope to have Marouane Fellaini available again within six weeks after sending the Belgium star for a wrist operation. The midfielder was suffering with a back problem anyway, so David Moyes has seized the chance to get his former Everton player right. Once that's out of the way, Fellaini might finally start to show his best form.
0' CAIRNEY SET FOR JANUARY EXIT
It looks like Hull midfielder Tom Cairney could finalise a permanent move to Blackburn Rovers in January. The 22-year-old has been a success in the North West, having struggled to break into the Tigers' first team, but Steve Bruce has rejected an opening bid. Blackburn boss Gary Bowyer is eager to make the deal happen, so watch this space.
0' REF WATCH
Michael Oliver is the man to take charge of today's early festive kick off, and he could have a job on his hands with young Adnan Januzaj. The forward has mixed some dazzling displays this season with a disappointing willingness to use simulation, so Mr Oliver will have to keep his eyes peeled. And that's before we even mention Ashley Young.
0' HULL CITY V MANCHESTER UNITED
It's time for the rest of the Barclays Premier League to worry as Manchester United finally hit their stride. The Red Devils typically put together an all-conquering run from the midpoint of the season, and four wins in their last four games, including two in the Premier League, suggest that run may have begun. Plucky Hull might have something to say about that however; Steve Bruce's Tigers have been doing their manager proud all season, and are undefeated in three Premier League matches, although each of those fixtures ended in a draw. David Moyes just needs that winning streak of his to continue. Join me, Luke Ostler, at 12.45pm for all the action from the KC Stadium.
