Manchester City vs. Crystal Palace
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME MANCHESTER CITY 1, CRYSTAL PALACE 0
After Palace's defensive steel kept out Manchester City for over an hour, their resolute defence was finally unlocked by the simplest of goals after 66 minutes. Navas pulled the ball back from the goal line to the feet of Dzeko on the penalty spot, and he slammed the ball home. That came during a period where City were looking unconvincing and Palace were in the ascendency, although to be honest they rarely seriously troubled Hart. And although Palace won a corner straight from the restart, from which Mariappa headed down and wide when given a clear sight of goal, City were able to show their class and professionalism by keeping possession and tempting Palace forward. But they weren't tempted, and both sides will be relatively happy with this result. For Pulis, defeat by a single goal at this stadium will be more than he could have reasonably hoped for, whilst City have their tenth consecutive home win - although Pellegrini will be slightly concerned by the way his team huffed and puffed to achieve it, and by how unconvincing they looked at times.
90' FULL TIME
Marriner blows the final whistle and City have their tenth straight home win.
90' OVER THE BAR
Dzeko, at full stretch, heads just over the bar after a Navas cross.
89' SILVA BOOKED
Silva is booked for a foul as we move into two minutes of added-on time.
84' RUNNING THE CLOCK DOWN
Almost slow motion now as City retain the ball and run the clock down. If Palace want a chance to get back into this game, they'll need to commit themselves forward, but they'll also know what City might do to them if they do. City have had 78% possession in the last ten minutes – and it shows!
81' POSSESSION PLAY
More possession play from City, passing the ball around in midfield and tempting Palace to break their ranks and come looking for the ball, leaving space behind. But Palace aren't playing that game, and are happy to let City keep passing the ball around.
78' TIGHT MARKING
A long cross from Kolarov is headed goalwards by Dzeko, but Speroni gathers easily. It looks like Jedinak is now man-marking Silva – staying within a yard of him wherever he is.
76' PALACE SUBSTITUTE
Pulis juggles his team too, taking off the impressive Bolasie and bringing on Jonathan Williams.
75' FINAL CITY SUB
Pellegrini makes his final change, replacing Milner with Aleksandar Kolarov – presumably saving Milner's legs now the breakthrough has been made.
73' SLOWING IT DOWN
City are keeping possession, slowing the game down, and making Palace work for a sight of the ball – the visitors haven't won a single point after conceding first all season, so that'll be a bad sign for Pulis.
71' IMPOSING CONTROL
Time for City to impose some control on this game for the last 20 minutes. A neat string of passes between Silva and Negredo nearly opens up Palace again, but you sense the goal has made this a quite different game now.
68' JUST WIDE
Palace attack immediately from the restart and win a corner. From this Mariappa heads into the ground and just wide when he had a clear sight of goal.
66' GOOOAAALLL!!! DZEKO
Against the run of play, City take the lead. A cut back from Navas goes to Dzeko on the penalty spot, and he hammers the ball home.
64' CITY UNDER PRESSURE
Another long shot, this time by Jedinak, is pushed over the bar by Hart. City soaking up pressure they hardly expected to be under, and the tension amongst the crowd is almost tangible.
62' PUNCHEON WIDE
Puncheon tries a curling shot from outside the area. Hart is beaten but the ball doesn't quite curl enough, and goes the wrong side of the post. This looks like an accident waiting to happen unless City sort themselves out soon.
60' PALACE RIDING THEIR LUCK
A decent attack sees the ball pinging around the Palace area, with the defenders riding their luck, but they get away with it and clear the ball.
58' PALACE CONFIDENCE
Palace have a corner - it's played short but easily cleared by City. It's clear that Palace fancy their chances of nicking all three points here today. their confidence is visibly growing almost by the minute.
55' CITY SUBSTITUTES
Pellegrini makes changes to try and break the deadlock. Fernandinho and Boyata are replaced by Samir Nasri and Alvaro Negredo.
53' PUSHING IN THE BOX
A city corner, won by Milner comes to nothing as referee Marriner stops play after pushing in the area.
51' JEDINAK SHOT
Jedinak shoots from 20 yards and his left-foot drive is pushed wide by Hart. A decent chance and Palace's best of the game so far. The Palace fans are making noise now, with the home crowd noticeably nervous.
49' HIGHER TEMPO
City look to be playing a higher tempo, with Silva and Fernandinho pushed further forward and Garcia pulling the attacking strings.
47' CITY CORNER
City win an early corner after a cross from Milner. Navas takes it but Garcia heads well over.
46' SECOND HALF
City kick us off for the second half. No substitutions from either team.
45' HALF TIME MANCHESTER CITY 0, CRYSTAL PALACE 0
In a match which most observers predicted would be a massacre, Tony Pulis will be happy that his Palace team are still in contention. They lined up from the start with two walls across the park – four in defence and a line of five in front of them – and despite numerous half-chances City weren't able to conjure up the moment of magic needed to break through. As the game went on, Palace grew in confidence and inventiveness but the half was still dominated by City, who had 70% of the possession and the bulk of the shots, especially in a late flourish just before half time - but no goals. Pellegrini has used this game to rest some of his biggest stars in the busy Christmas period, but if the game carries on in this pattern then it can't be too long before he makes changes.
45' SPERONI SAVE
A fine save as Speroni turns Fernandinho's header over his bar. Best chance of the game for City after a nice cross from Milner.
45' PALACE CORNER
Palace win their first corner, much to their fans' jubilation. But they can't make anything of it, and we're into five minutes of time added on.
44' FERNANDINHO OVER BAR
Another nice City interplay around the Palace area, but they again can't break thought the mass of defenders, and Fernandinho eventually shoots over the bar.
40' SILVA WIDE
Silva shoots from a tight angle, but can't keep his shot on target.
38' HANDBAGS IN THE BOX
A diagonal ball to Navas is played out for a City corner, but Kompany's attempted overhead kick from this doesn't connect. There's a bit of pushing and shoving in the aftermath as the Palace defenders objected to his high boot, but despite stern words to a few players referee Marriner takes no action.
35' PALACE SUBSTITUTE
Chamakh comes on for Jerome and play continues.
31' JEROME OFF
Jerome is to be replaced – he limps off as Marouane Chamakh gets ready to come on. Ten-man Palace now have no attacking options on the pitch.
29' TREATMENT FOR TWO
A dangerous cross into the box from Bolasie is claimed by Hart, but Jerome and the city ‘keeper both need treatment after colliding.
27' BETTER FOR PALACE
A decent spell for Palace, as first Hart has to scramble across to prevent a corner, and then Bolasie shoots but doesn't trouble Hart. Pulis will definitely be the happier of the two managers so far.
23' CITY ASSERTING THEMSELVES
Delaney saves Palace with a header over his own bar with Silva lurking. City are slowly starting to assert themselves, as Kompany shoots from distance and Speroni gets down well to save his shot as it's deflected.
21' MILNER WIDE
Better play from City wins them a corner. Silva takes it but City cannot capitalise and Palace clear again. City bring it back but Milner's shot is wide.
19' PALACE FREE KICK
Bolasie is judged to have been fouled by Garcia so Palace have a free kick 30 yards from goal. Bannon floats it into the box but it goes straight out of play.
15' FIRST PALACE SHOT
Parr shoots for Palace, but it's from distance and well-wide of Hart's near post.
15' JEROME SLIPS
Jerome slips and looks to have hurt his ankle, but will carry on. An injury to him would be all that Pulis needs right now!
14' BUS WELL AND TRULY PARKED
Palace have had just the occasional foray into City's half, but Jerome is virtually alone and heavily outnumbered there, so they've come to naught. Palace have parked the proverbial bus from the first minute of this game.
11' JUST WIDE
Silva sets up Fernandinho on the edge of the Place box, but his low shot zings just wide of the post.
8' CITY CORNERS
City are dominating possession so far, with Palace sitting back in numbers. A long-range shot from Fernandinho is deflected wide for City's first corner. That leads to another corner, but Palace eventually half-clear the ball.
5' DZEKO SHOOTS WIDE
Dzeko shoots just wide after being played in by Silva. A casual-looking shot – perhaps he couldn't believe he wasn't offside?
4' FIRST CITY ATTACK
Palace play the ball forward to Jerome, but he loses it in the centre circle and Palace are under attack again. A long ball forward is just ahead of Fernandinho and goes out for a goal kick.
2' COMPOSED START
City start looking composed, passing the ball around nicely and probing for weakness in the massed Palace defence.
1' WE'RE OFF
Palace kick us off after a stirring minutes' applause in honour of those who have died in the past year.
0' CRYSTAL PALACE TEAM
Julian Speroni, Adrian Mariappa, Danny Gabbidon, Damien Delaney, Jonathan Parr, Joel Ward, Mile Jedinak, Barry Bannan, Jason Puncheon, Yannick Bolasie, Cameron Jerome. Substitutes: Lewis Price, Dean Moxey, Jose Campana, Jonathan Williams, Kevin Phillips, Dwight Gayle, Marouane Chamakh.
0' MANCHESTER CITY TEAM
Joe Hart, Dedryck Boyata, Vincent Kompany, Matija Nastasic, Gael Clichy, Javi Garcia, Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, David Silva, James Milner, Edin Dzeko. Substitutes: Costel Pantilimon, Joleon Lescott, Aleksandar Kolarov, Yaya Toure, Jack Rodwell, Alvaro Negredo, Samir Nasri.
0' REF WATCH
Today's referee is Andre Marriner, for whom this will be the 15th Premier League match of the season. In these matches he has shown four red cards with two of these shown to Sunderland players in their defeat at Hull in November. The following week, Marriner brandished ten yellow cards when Chelsea hosted West Brom out of his season-long total of 47 yellows. However, things have been calmer since then, as he has shown just ten yellow cards in his last five Premier League matches.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Bookmakers are offering odds of 28/1 on a Palace victory today, unbelievable odds for a one-off match. But with City second in the table and in imperious form at home, and with their visitors embroiled in the relegation tussle at the other end of the table those would seem realistic odds. And recent history backs up this view – Palace have lost on their last three visits to Manchester City, and have not won in seven attempts, going back to 2002. The last meeting between these sides was a Carling Cup clash at Selhurst Park in August 2009, which City won 2-0, and their only previous Premier League meetings came in 2004/05, with City taking all six points with victories by 3-1 at home and 2-1 in London.
0' IMPROVEMENT UNDER PULIS
In his seven matches since arriving at the club, Palace manager Tony Pulis has shown signs that Palace might not be the relegation certainties they once looked, focussing on organisation and doggedness in his new charges. And, with four wins, all with a clean sheet, their haul of twelve points from seven matches is a major transformation for a team which only won four points from the previous 11 matches. However, Palace are the opposite of their hosts when it comes to scoring – with just twelve league goals scored all season, and more than one goal in just two matches. Whilst manager at Stoke, Pulis had a record of juggling his squad for matches he thought he was unlikely to win, in order to give priority to those against fellow-relegation strugglers where a win would be more valuable. He has Marouane Chamakh available after suspension and may well retain Yannick Bolasie, but he may also bring in a number of youngsters and fringe players.
0' HIGH-SCORING CITY
So far in the league this season City have played nine athome and won every one of them, with an aggregate score of 37:6, including scoring at least three goals in each of their last eight home matches. In fact, City have scored in each of their last 59 Premier League home matches, and should they score today they'll break the Premier League record for most goals scored from the first 19 matches – beating their existing tally of 53, set in 2011/12. Following their last two matches, home victories over table-topping teams Arsenal and Liverpool, a City win today would see them end the day as league leaders themselves since Arsenal don't play until tomorrow. Manager Manuel Pellegrini is still without Sergio Aguero, Martin Demichelis, and Micah Richards through injury, although defender Matija Nastasic, a substitute on Boxing Day, may well start today.
