Minute Commentary
90' FULHAM 2-1 WEST HAM
This was the definition of a relegation six-pointer, and it is Fulham who have emerged with a full share of the spoils. You can't say it wasn't deserved either as they dominated large periods of the match, especially after Kevin Nolan's dismissal. It was the visitors who went in front though, when Mohamed Diame collected a long free-kick and fired home, but Fulham responded well with Steve Sidwell nodding in a corner to restore parity for the Cottagers. Adel Taarabt had a great chance saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen before Kevin Nolan was sent off after an off-the-ball challenge on Fernando Amorebieta to give the hosts a significant advantage going into the second half. They wasted chance after chance, with Taarabt the main culprit, but Berbatov tapped home after good work from substitute Kacaniklic to wrap up the points. Meulensteen's men go two points clear of the drop zone in 16th, while the misery continues for Sam Allardyce, who sees his side remain in 19th, four points adrift of safety. Are we set for our seventh Premier League managerial casualty of the season in the coming days? Only time will tell.
90' FULHAM BEAT WEST HAM AT CRAVEN COTTAGE
That's that - Mark Clattenburg brings the game to a close, and Fulham have propelled themselves outside of the relegation zone with a 2-1 victory over West Ham.
90' LAST CHANCE SALOON
That could be the visitors' last chance as Stewart Downing's hopeful shot from range is headed just wide of the near post by Guy Demel. It simply hasn't been West Ham's day, and this looks like being a massive result in the context of the relegation zone.
90' ALL IN THE FULHAM AREA
Nervy moments for the hosts here as the first two minutes of added time are spent in their penalty area, with bodies flying about everywhere, but they are dealing with everything being thrown at them for now.
90' FOUR ADDITIONAL MINUTES
There will be four minutes of injury time at Craven Cottage as West Ham look for an unlikely equalising goal. What a result this would be for Fulham.
88' UNCERTAIN KEEPING
He has been brilliant all game, but Jussi Jaaskelainen nearly gifted Fulham the win there. Pajtim Kasami's cross from the right is heading towards the top corner, and the Hammers keeper realises in just enough time to acrobatically tip it behind.
86' PLAYING IN FRONT OF THEM
As we tick into the last five minutes at Craven Cottage, the home side are inevitably withdrawing deeper and deeper. However, with only ten men on the field, West Ham are struggling to make any chances and are largely playing in front of the Cottagers' backline.
83' SEEING IT OUT
Despite the fact that they are holding on to a precious lead in a massive game, Fulham are showing no sign of nerves, and are having 70% of the ball - seven minutes remain for West Ham to get a goal.
80' WINGS THE BEST OPTION
If the Hammers are to get back into this one, their wingers will likely have played a part. Stewart Downing is getting on the ball more and more, and after good work from him Guy Demel swings one in, but Rat's lay-off is just too far in front of Collison and Stockdale can collect.
79' FULHAM SUB
The home side switch things around once more, as Damien Duff is taken out of the action, with Pajtim Kasami the man to replace him.
77' ANOTHER FREE HEADER
Alou Diarra finds himself in all sorts of room from a free-kick, but as in the first half, he can't direct his free header anywhere near the target. I can guess what he'll be working on at the training ground in the next few days.
76' ALERT KEEPING
This is better from West Ham, as Matthew Taylor forces his way into the area before releasing a shot that is well held by David Stockdale. It had to be as well, because Carlton Cole was waiting to bury the rebound.
74' SILLY BOOKING
Dimitar Berbatov picks up an unnecessary caution for a drag back on Matthew Taylor as the West Ham man broke clear. A quarter of an hour is left on the clock, and the visitors don't even look like scoring.
72' BENT SHOULD SCORE
Darren Bent has an opportunity to make an instant impact, but he only finds the gloves of Jaaskelainen when he is sent clean through on goal. Will Fulham live to regret these missed chances?
70' MORE SUBS
Fulham send on Darren Bent for the unlucky Adel Taarabt, and Carlton Cole is on for the Hammers, with Modibo Maiga making way. Twenty minutes remain at Craven Cottage.
67' FULHAM 2-1 WEST HAM
The comeback is complete as Fulham make their dominance count through Dimitar Berbatov. Alex Kacaniklic makes use of a defensive error by gliding to the byline and pulling it back for Amorebieta. The defender miskicks his effort, but only into the path of Berbatov, who gleefully taps home. The West Ham players scream for offside, but the linesman is having none of it.
66' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Dimitar Berbatov puts Fulham in front with a tap-in!
64' CRIES FOR A PENALTY
Damien Duff is absolutely livid with Mark Clattenburg, as the winger feels that Razvan Rat has dragged him down in the penalty area. The man with the whistle merely shakes his head though, as he thought Duff went down too easily.
63' TAARABT HAS TO SCORE
Adel Taarabt will be wondering how he has not put his side in front - the Moroccan midfielder first sees his header tipped onto the post by Jaaseklainen, before he gets his follow up all wrong when he had an open goal.
61' NICE LINK UP
The Cottagers are starting to express themselves more and more as they realise they've got West Ham where they want them here. Lovely football between Berbatov, Taarabt and Sidwell sets up the latter for a shot at goal from range, but it is deflected behind by Guy Demel.
58' FULHAM PRESSING FOR A SECOND
It is still all Fulham, but they are just struggling to get a clear shot away to trouble Jussi Jaaskelainen at the moment. After a goalmouth scramble from a corner, Taarabt turns and fires goalwards, but the Hammers stopper is again equal to it.
57' SUBS FOR BOTH
Both managers decide to make changes here, with Kieran Richardson replaced by Alex Kacaniklic for the hosts, while West Ham send on Stewart Downing, taking off goalscorer Mohamed Diame.
55' SKEWED SHOT
Fulham once more work the ball nicely into the area, with Dimitar Berbatov avoiding a couple of challenges before pulling the ball back for Taarabt, who skies his effort from a promising position. A goal looks on the horizon for the Cottagers.
52' HARD GOING FOR THE HAMMERS
We are only seven minutes into the second half, but you can already see how tough this second period is going to be for Allardyce's men. They are being pushed back very deep here, and Fulham are absolutely dominating proceedings.
50' NEARLY AN OWN GOAL
There hasn't been much that hasn't gone wrong for West Ham this afternoon, but they nearly add an own goal to the collection as George McCartney heads Riether's cross towards the bottom corner, but once more Jaaskelainen does well to save it.
48' GREAT FOOTWORK
Kieran Richardson cuts inside from the left wing and feeds John Arne Riise, who is just about onside. The former Liverpool man twists Sascha Riether inside out before getting a shot away that is well stopped by Jaasskelainen - West Ham under the cosh already.
46' BACK IN ACTION
We are back under way at Craven Cottage - no changes for either side at the break.
45' FULHAM 1-1 WEST HAM
It has been an eventful first half at Craven Cottage from minute one as these two teams fight for a vital three points that will give their relegation fight a shot in the arm. It was the Hammers who took the lead as Mohamed Diame had all the time in the world to collect a long free-kick, turn and fire into the bottom corner. Fulham's defending was appauling, but they responded well and got a deserved leveller when Steve Sidwell nodded home Adel Taarabt's cross from the penalty spot. Taarabt nearly gave the hosts the lead not long after, but Jussi Jaaskelainen was on hand to avert the danger, and the Cottagers were left frustrated. However, the remainder of the half did not go without incident as Kevin Nolan was sent off for pushing Fernando Amorebieta to the floor and then supposedly kicking out at the Venezuela defender. It looked a tad harsh to me, but I have been known to get things wrong before. Either way, this looks to be a steep hill for the visitors to climb in the second period.
45' EVEN STEVENS AT THE BREAK
At the end of two additional minutes Modibo Maiga nearly pounces on a Philippe Senderos error, but the defender redeems himself well, and we go into the interval with the scores at one apiece.
45' NOLAN SENT OFF
Uh-oh, things are beginning to unravel very quickly for Sam Allardyce's side here as Kevin Nolan is given a red card by Mark Clattenburg. As the midfielder tried to chase down a long ball, Fernando Amorebieta deliberately got in his way, and Nolan pushed the defender to the ground. Amorebieta's theatrics probably got Nolan sent off there, but for me that is a harsh call.
43' DOMINATING POSSESSION
It looked for a short period of time as if the visitors were going to win this match at a canter such was Fulham's sloppiness at the back, but the possession stats show that Rene Meulensteen's men have had 69% of the ball - impressive stuff, but they have yet to find another goal to stamp their authority on this one.
40' ANOTHER RIISE EFFORT
An inswinging free-kick from a central position is cleared only as far as John Arne Riise, who rifles in a shot that is blocked behind by Joey O'Brien. The corner comes to nothing, but this is a decent spell of pressure from the Cottagers.
37' FULHAM NEARLY LEAD
Adel Taarabt is so close to punishing the West Ham backline for momentarily being at sixes and sevens following that goal, but Jussi Jaaskelainen makes an excellent save to deny the Moroccan. All of a sudden, the confidence is flowing through the home players.
35' FULHAM 1-1 WEST HAM
Defend the corner Razvan Rat did not, and Fulham claim a deserved equaliser. Adel Taarabt whips in a corner and Steve Sidwell nods the ball into the top of the net. A goal steeped in simplicity, but the home fans won't care - game on.
34' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Steve Sidwell equalises for Fulham - we're all square at Craven Cottage!
31' WEST HAM CHANGE
Sam Allardyce is forced to make a substitution here just half an hour into the game as Mark Noble has picked up an injury. His replacement is Razvan Rat, and the defender's first job will be to defend a Fulham corner.
29' GOOD FULHAM PRESSURE
The hosts are just starting to up the ante here, with Scott Parker going on a great individual run that earns his side a corner. Sidwell ends up getting his head on it, but even though Jaaskelainen is well beaten, Modibo Maiga is there to head off the line. It has been a good ten minutes or so from Fulham here.
27' ACROBATIC ATTEMPT
Dimitar Berbatov tries to pull something right out of the top drawer as he swivels and fires towards goal from Riise's left wing cross, but Jussi Jaaskelainen is equal to it, and the Bulgarian is once more frustrated.
24' STOCKDALE TO THE RESCUE
It should be 2-0, it really should. Sascha Riether is caught far too high up the pitch, and Diame has all the time in the world to pick out a cross from the left. Kevin Nolan gets on the end of it, but his powerful header is brilliantly stopped by David Stockdale.
22' OUT OF SORTS
The home side are really struggling to get going here, and they are making errors all over the shop. David Stockdale has a simple pass to Philippe Senderos, but he somehow miscues it and Diame picks up possession, however the goalscorer can't make anything of it. The Hammers are looking very comfortable at present.
19' JUST OFFSIDE
Some slick build-up play between Jack Collison and Mohamed Diame looks like it has seen the former through on goal, but the offside flag correctly goes up and Fulham escape.
17' WOULD HAVE BEEN A WORLDIE
We all know John Arne Riise can strike a ball, and he does exactly that here with a rasper of an effort following Scott Parker's cleared cross. The full-back sprints on to the loose ball and fires in an effort at approximately 7000mph that is just wide of the top corner. That would have been sensational.
15' SIGHT OF GOAL
After a clumsy free-kick is given away in a dangerous position by the visitors, Adel Tarrabt steps up to take a shot at goal, but the West Ham wall does its job and the danger is cleared.
13' MORE POOR DEFENDING
Fulham really do look in dire straits at the back - they are caught far too open on the counter-attack, and are forced to give away a corner. When the delivery comes in Alou Diarra is completely free at the back post, but the West Ham man doesn't connect and it stays at 1-0.
10' NEEDED A TOUCH
The Cottagers respond well to that early setback, with Steve Sidwell receiving the ball out wide and whipping in a lovely cross right across the six-yard box. Unfortunately for Fulham, no one is brave enough to commit themselves and the ball drifts behind for a goal kick.
8' FULHAM 0-1 WEST HAM
After Dimitar Berbatov is caught offside, West Ham launch a long free-kick forward. It is allowed to fall for Diame, who simply chests it down, turns and fires home. An early boost for the visitors, but that was shocking defending from Fulham after a bright start to the game.
7' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Mohamed Diame nets for West Ham to give the Hammers an early lead!
5' END TO END
Chances in both final thirds here as Dimitar Berbatov can't quite get on the end of a great Adel Taarabt cross, before Kevin Nolan skews his shot following a flick on from Mohamed Diame. It's been a good opening five minutes at Craven Cottage.
3' POSITIVE START
It is the hosts who are making all of the early running here, with Dimitar Berbatov trying to squeeze the ball through to Adel Taarabt from a tight position. Guy Demel sees off the danger though.
1' UNDER WAY
We are under way at Craven Cottage - massive game for both sides this afternoon.
0' FULL TEAMS
Fulham: Stockdale, Riether, Riise, Sidwell, Senderos, Amorebieta, Duff, Parker, Berbatov, Taarabt, Richardson. Subs: Kasami, Kacaniklic, Hughes, Dejagah, Bent, Bettinelli, Dembele. West Ham: Jaaskelainen, Demel, McCartney, Noble, O'Brien, Diarra, Collison, Diame, Maiga, Nolan, Taylor. Subs: Jarvis, Rat, Adrian, Downing, Joe Cole, Carlton Cole, Potts.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Rene Meulensteen is prepared to make wholesale changes to the team that lost 6-0 to Fulham in the last fixture, with Elsad Zverotic, Giorgos Karagounis and Hugo Rodallega all in danger of losing their place, but Scott Parker is likely to return in midfield alongside Scott Parker for Fulham. Dimitar Berbatov is still absent with an injury, so Darren Bent could be drafted in up top for the Cottagers. For West Ham, manager Sam Allardyce will be without any recognised central defenders for the trip to Craven Cottage, as James Tomkins and James Collins have groin injuries, while Winston Reid is sidelined with an ankle problem. Ricardo Vaz Te, Stewart Downing and Mladen Petric all miss out for the Hammers, but Ravel Morrison could return for the visitors.
0' REF WATCH
Today's referee will be Durham's Mark Clattenburg, as the 38-year-old takes charge of his 13th Premier League match so far in the campaign. He is not a man who is short of controversy, as he has irked many football fans over the years. He was not allowed to referee an Everton match for five years following his performance in the Merseyside derby in 2007, while Tottenham supporters will remember him not allowing Pedro Mendes' infamous “goal” in 2005, and then proceeding to let Nani's strange goal stand in 2010. Chelsea players have also been critical of Clattenburg, as some of them complained about inappropriate language during a game between the Blues and Man Utd in 2012. Clattenburg's assistants today will be Simon Beck and Ron Ganfield, while Scott Mathieson will deputise as the fourth official this afternoon.
0' BIG SAM IN BIG TROUBLE
Football is a fickle business, so it is inevitable that Sam Allardyce's good work in establishing West Ham as a mid-table Premier League outfit last season will be forgotten soon enough as they languish in the relegation zone at the start of the new year. Hammers fans may well be getting concerned about their side's current run of form though, and they have every right to as West Ham are winless in their last six league fixtures, and have conceded 13 goals in their last five domestic matches. Add to that the fact that they have lost in their last five games on the road, and it is all starting to look very shaky at West Ham. However, with Modibo Maiga and Kevin Nolan returning to the score-sheet a couple of days ago, there is something for Hammers fans to cheer about.
0' COTTAGERS IN CRISIS?
They may well boast the attacking talents of the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Bryan Ruiz and Darren Bent, but make no mistake about it – Fulham are in trouble this season. When you're in such a situation, you need a home banker to make things right, but the hosts don't have that this afternoon. West Ham have emerged triumphant in three of the last four meetings between the two, and Rene Meulensteen's side have won just two of the last 18 league clashes against the Hammers. In the last 12 league fixtures between the two, Fulham have not kept a single clean sheet against West Ham. Additionally, the Cottagers have lost nine of their last eleven games in England's top division, and match Crystal Palace for the most losses so far in the campaign, with 13 defeats. I'd love to give you some good omens Fulham fans, but I can't really think of any – no matter what happens today, it can't be as bad as the debacle at the KC Stadium though, can it?
0' PREVIEW
So, 2014 is upon us - time for a fresh start, a new beginning, a whole other era. To me, that all sounds like dramatic mumbo jumbo, but Fulham and West Ham will certainly be hoping that a bright future is on the horizon in this calendar year, as to be fair, they have both had shockers in the 2013-14 season so far. They both sit in the relegation zone, in 18th and 19th places respectively, and a victory today would be of huge significance given the close proximity between the two sides in the table – just one point seperates them in total. However, a loss would be devastating for the side that succumbs, as they would have to sit back and watch as their fellow relegation battlers extend the points gap between themselves and safety.
