Swansea City vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
90' FT: SWANSEA 2 MAN CITY 3
Manchester City go top of the Premier League ahead of Arsenal's home game with Cardiff, but they were made to work for their three points before ultimately taking control. Fernandinho's crisp shot from a half-cleared corner gave the visitors a 15th-minute lead which was cancelled out in first-half stoppage-time by a Wilfried Bony header that replays showed should have been disallowed for offside. The second half was dominated by City and two goals in eight minutes from Yaya Toure and Aleksandar Kolarov put the game to bed. There was still time for a Joe Hart clanger, but this one from a corner did not cost a goal. He was beaten in stoppage time by a stunner by Bony, who was excellent throughout for the home side.
90' MAN CITY BOOKING
Milner is booked for wasting time.
90' GOAL: SWANSEA 2 MAN CITY 3
Wilfried Bony pulls one back for Swansea with a stunning 25-yard strike.
90' MAN CITY SUBSTITUTION
Jack Rodwell replaces Navas for City. We are about to enter three minutes of added time.
89' STICKY SPELL
Swansea are heading for a sixth game without a win. These are worrying times with Manchester United and Tottenham to come in their next two league matches.
87' MAN CITY BOOKING
Zabaleta goes in late on Lamah and is a little unlucky to collect a yellow card.
85' HIGH AND WIDE
Bony shoots into the stands. Swansea have looked a beaten side for some time.
83' RAINING GOALS
City have netted 57 Premier League goals in their opening 20 games. At this pace they will end up with 108 at the end of the season. It's a good reason why most neutrals would prefer to see them win the title ahead of Chelsea.
80' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Swansea make a change, with Alex Pozuelo coming on for Jonjo Shelvey, who has been a non-factor in this second half.
77' INJURY CONCERN
Nasri is on the bench having an ice pack applied to his left hamstring. It's probably a precaution, and with the FA Cup at the weekend he could be given a well-deserved rest.
76' WILLIAMS IN THE WAY
Milner cuts inside and shoots low, but Williams is in the way of the shot and the England midfielder never really got hold of it.
73' BLUNDER BY HART
Bony has looked lively today. He holds up the ball and lashes a left-foot shot that Hart palms away from under the bar. From the corner the goalkeeper makes an absolute howler, missing the ball and gifting Williams what should be a goal. The defender, though, is taken by surprise and the ball deflects off his thigh for a goal-kick.
70' MAN CITY SUBSTITUTION
City make another change, with James Milner replacing Nasri.
69' WORRYING TIMES
Michael Laudrup has to be concerned about his side getting closer and closer to the relegation zone. They have played well today, but a lengthening injury list and Europa League participation is starting to take its toll.
67' GOAL DETAILS
The left-back surged forward and cut inside on to his allegedly weaker right foot before letting fly with a shot that hit the inside of Canas' leg. Tremmel probably should have saved the effort, but he was likely put off by the deflection.
66' GOAL: SWANSEA 1 MAN CITY 3
Aleksandar Kolarov thumps home a third for Manchester City.
62' SHOT BLOCKED
Williams sees his goalbound shot hit the back of Rangel after an excellent initial clearance from Nastasic. Fernandinho shoots well wide at the other end.
61' MAN CITY SUBSTITUTION
City make a switch, with Javi Garcia replacing Negredo.
59' GOAL DETAILS
City have deserved that for the way they have started this second half. Swansea never cleared their lines, with Canas at fault and Toure's shot deflected up off Williams before nestling in the corner.
58' GOAL: SWANSEA 1 MAN CITY 2
Yaya Toure puts City back in front.
56' GROANS ALL ROUND
Swansea win a free-kick just outside the box. It's a promising position, but De Guzman skies his attempt. Groans all round from the crowd.
55' MAN CITY BOOKING
Kompany is shown the yellow card for pulling the shirt of his opponent. The Belgian is very frustrated about how this day is turning out.
53' FLORES CAUGHT NAPPING
Swansea have a huge let-off as Chico Flores inexcusably leaves the ball and lets in Negredo. The final shot, though, is weak and easy for Tremmel to deal with.
50' MORE GOALS ON CARDS
City have been scoring goals for fun recently, outscoring their opponents 26-9 over the last eight games before today. It would be a great surprise if this one finished 1-1.
48' SWANSEA BOOKING
Jonjo Shelvey's wild lunge at Samir Nasri earnt him a yellow card just before half-time, we have been told. It's two bookings each if you were keeping total.
47' STILL RAINING
It is still bucketing down here in Wales. So much for my weather prognostications, I will stick to the current day job.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Manchester City get the second half under way.
45' HT: SWANSEA 1 MAN CITY 1
It's all square at the break thanks to that goal from Bony seconds before the interval. Swansea deserved that for the way they stuck about their task. City had looked comfortable having taken the lead thanks to a fine strike from Fernandinho on 15 minutes, his first on the road for City. The Brazilian netted with a low shot that gave Gerhard Tremmel no chance. City looked threatening every time they attacked for a while, but Swansea then came more into the game and Wilfried Bony shot just wide before Jonathan de Guzman's effort was too close to Joe Hart. Bony, though, eventually got the goal the home side's pressure merited.
45' GOAL: SWANSEA 1 MAN CITY 1
Wilfried Bony levels for Swansea, meeting a De Guzman cross from the right with a header into the corner. He was offside, but the flag stayed down.
45' ALERT GOALKEEPING
Hart comes off his line to punch the ball off the head of Bony, who looked set to get on the end of a cross from the right. The interval is coming at just the wrong time for Swansea.
45' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
Bony plays a magnificent one-two with Shelvey and flashes another angled shot just wide of the far post. Nasri volleys wide at the other end. Three minutes of stoppage time.
43' POOR CONTROL
Kolarov does superbly down the left and his ball into the centre would have created a glorious chance had Dzeko been able to control it on his thigh.
40' OFF TARGET AGAIN
Zabaleta is forward again, but this time he drags a low shot well wide of the target.
39' A BOOKING APIECE
Two yellow cards are handed out in quick succession, one for Canas, who had implored the referee to book an opponent, and the other to Dzeko for an earlier handball.
36' WILLIAMS DENIED
Swansea threaten, with Flores missing the initial attempt and Kompany blocking a fierce shot from Williams that was heading for the corner.
34' CAUGHT OFFSIDE
Dzeko and Negredo get in each other's way at a City free-kick and are a little relieved when they look over to see the flag was already up for offside.
33' DZEKO HEADS OVER
Swansea fail to clear a City corner and Dzeko heads over when Nasri has the chance to deliver a second cross into the area.
31' DEFLECTED WIDE
A superb dummy from Navas sets up another City break. Dzeko's snap-shot hits Chico Flores and is a foot wide of the post.
30' DANGEROUS DE GUZMAN
Jonathan de Guzman has been the best player on the field over the last 10 minutes or so and is troubling the visitors with his runs from deep.
28' WELL-HIT SHOT
The initial free-kick rebounds off the wall to Canas, whose low drive is well struck but wide of the post.
27' SWANSEA BOOKING
Nasri is cautioned for tripping Rangel, his third yellow card of the season. It is ten cards now, not five, before a suspension.
25' HART CALLED INTO ACTION
That's better from Swansea. A lovely passing move finishes with De Guzman's low shot being comfortably saved by Hart.
24' OVER THE BAR
Shelvey exchanges passes with De Guzman and beats his man before shooting high and wide from a promising position on the edge of the area.
22' FLOWING FOOTBALL
City play the ball out beautifully from in front of their own goal and almost create a chance at the other end, Dzeko's cross being cut out before it can reach Negredo.
20' TEST FOR DAVIES
Poor Ben Davies has his work cut out at left-back for Swansea today. He has to contend with not just Navas, but also Zabaleta attacking on the overlap at every opportunity.
18' SCUFFED ATTEMPT
City break purposefully, but Negredo makes a right mess of a first-time shot inside the area. Swansea look very vulnerable in defence here.
17' FIRST SWANSEA CORNER
A great raking pass from De Guzman picks out the forward run of Rangel down the right and Swansea have their first corner, which City clear easily.
15' GOAL DETAILS
The visitors have deserved that. De Guzman failed to clear a cross from the right and it ricocheted out to Fernandinho, who drove home a low shot from just inside the box.
14' GOAL: SWANSEA 0 MAN CITY 1
Fernandinho gives Manchester City the lead.
13' PUNCHED AWAY
Navas beats his man down the outside and drives a cross into the centre which Tremmel is forced to punch away. Swansea are seeing their fair share of the ball so far, but the visitors are carrying the greater threat.
11' SHORT OF BODIES
Losing Hernandez is a blow to Swansea, who had another midfielder, Leon Britton, pull out through illness this morning.
10' SWANSEA CHANGE
Hernandez is helped off the pitch and Roland Lamah, who netted his first Premier League goal against Villa last time out, is the replacement after a short delay.
8' INJURY BLOW
Pablo Hernandez looks like he has pulled his left hamstring and his day is done.
7' BONY GOES CLOSE
Wilfried Bony has been short of goals recently, but he looks full of confidence. A fiercely-driven low shot from distance misses the post by a whisker. Hart was beaten there.
5' CHANGE OF SHIRT
We have a delay to proceedings while Gerhard Tremmel is asked to replace his black goalkeeping jersey with an orange one. The visitors are all in black today.
4' NOT FAR AWAY
City are straight on the attack. Navas finds Negredo on the overlap down the right and Dzeko meets the cross with a low shot that is not far wide.
2' FOUL DAY IN WALES
Happy New Year, soccer fans. It's a foul day here at the Liberty Stadium, the rain is bucketing down and there is also a strong wind to contend with. Looking at the rainfall radar, however, it looks like the rain might blow over in the next half hour or so.
1' HERE WE GO
Swansea kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' PREVIEW
If Manchester City could go on the road and match the performances they consistently turn in at home they would be even firmer favourites to land their second Premier League title in three years. Manuel Pellegrini's men travel to Swansea City in the early game on New Year's Day knowing that victory would put them back above Arsenal for a couple of hours at least. The way they have been playing in recent weeks, victory should be a formality. But so should it have been on their last outing to South Wales, when instead they suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Cardiff in the opening month of the season. Further setbacks on the road since to strugglers Aston Villa and Sunderland underline this travel sickness has become something of a lingering ailment that nobody seems quite sure how to cure. Yes, they haven't lost in the league away from home since early November, but there have still been alarms in their three away games since. With trips to come to Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton in the second half of the season, City could do with a comfortable win here, built on only a second clean sheet away from home. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Swansea invested heavily to bring Wilfried Bony to the Liberty Stadium in the summer, feeling he could provide an added scoring threat should Michu get injured or fail to rediscover his prolific form of last season. Both those things have happened to the Spaniard this time round, but Bony has failed to plug the gap. True, he has spent some time out injured, but even so he still has not scored a league goal since Nov. 10 and only three times this season has he completed 90 minutes, which also suggests fitness is an issue. For City, Alvaro Negredo has eight goals to his name and his contribution is going to be similarly crucial with Sergio Aguero sidelined until the middle of the month with a calf injury. And then there's Yaya Toure, who leads all Premier League midfielders with nine goals.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Manchester City have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 15 wins to seven by Swansea and three games being drawn. In South Wales, Swansea have six wins to four by City, with a further two meetings ending up all square. The first meeting between the sides this season took place only a month ago. City ran out 3-0 winners at the Etihad with Alvaro Negredo opening the scoring early on and Samir Nasri adding two more in the second half. The corresponding match last season on May 4 ended in a goalless draw.
0' FORM GUIDE
City start the day in second place with 41 points from 19 games, one point behind leaders Arsenal and one in front of Chelsea. They may be perfect at home, with ten wins out of ten, but away from the Etihad they have only claimed 11 points from nine games, the lowest haul of any of the clubs occupying the top nine places in the table. Swansea currently sit 11th, with 21 points, and are one of only three clubs in the division who have claimed more points on the road than they have at home. The Swans have failed to win in their last five games. City have won their last four and are unbeaten in eight, the draw at Southampton in early December the only time they have failed to collect maximum points over that stretch.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Michu (ankle) and Michel Vorm (knee) are both sidelined for Swansea as they recover from surgery, and Nathan Dyer is now a long-term absentee after damaging ankle ligaments at Norwich. Michael Laudrup will also be considering handing a start to the likes of Wayne Routledge, Leon Britton and Angel Rangel as he looks to give some of his players a rest after the busy Christmas schedule. Manchester City are without David Silva, who is serving a one-match suspension. Sergio Aguero (calf), Stevan Jovetic, Martin Demichelis and Micah Richards (all hamstring) miss out, but goalkeeper Joe Hart is fit, despite having five stitches inserted in a facial wound he suffered in the win over Crystal Palace.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Phil Dowd, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2001. The man from Stoke-on-Trent has shown 56 yellow cards in 13 games and ranks top in both cards brandished and cards per game average (4.31). Notably, though, he has yet to send anyone off or to award a penalty this season. Dowd's assistants today are Scott Ledger and Peter Bankes, while Kevin Friend is the fourth official.
