Hull City Tigers vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' FT: HULL 0 CHELSEA 2
Chelsea go to the top of the Premier League until at least tomorrow after a workmanlike rather than scintillating display at the KC Stadium. The match was won by one moment of class from Eden Hazard, who capped a fine Chelsea move with a sweetly-struck shot just before the hour. Fernando Torres added a second for insurance three minutes from time. There was not an awful lot to choose between the two sides, but you always felt that the visitors would have the extra class needed to prevail. Allan McGregor made one blinding save in the first half to deny Oscar and keep Hull in it. Scoring has been a problem for Steve Bruce's men all season and today was no exception. Yannick Sagbo was presented with a clear chance in the first half after a mistake by John Terry, but shot wastefully wide. It was to be a costly miss.
90' TIME TICKING DOWN
Huddlestone shoots well over from distance. The final whistle is imminent.
90' CHASING A RECORD
Petr Cech is two minutes away from a club record 209th clean sheet in all competitions for Chelsea. Cech currently has 208 from 457 games; Peter Bonetti managed 208 in 729 games.
90' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Chelsea's final change sees Michael Essien replace Ramires.
88' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Chelsea make another change, with Andre Schurrle coming on for Willian.
87' GOAL: HULL 0 CHELSEA 2
Torres doubles Chelsea's advantage with a clinically-taken goal, shooting low into the bottom corner with Willian supplying the assist.
86' POOR FROM TORRES
Chelsea catch Hull napping with a quickly-taken free-kick, but the final pass from Torres into the centre is wasteful in the extreme.
84' HULL SUBSTITUTION
Hull's final change sees the ginger-haired Steven Quinn come on for George Boyd.
83' HULL BOOKING
Figueroa is booked for a nasty tackle on Hazard, who tumbles to the turf in some pain.
81' PENALTY CLAIMS
Sagbo's long-range effort hits Terry. The crowd appeal hopefully for handball, but the referee is not interested.
80' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Mourinho looks to hang on to what he has, with John Obi Mikel taking the place of Oscar.
78' HULL SUBSTITUTION
Hull's second change sees Matty Fryatt come on for Chester, an attacking midfielder for a central defender.
75' SUPERB BLOCK
Willian tees up Oscar, but the Brazilian is denied by a brave block by Davies, who manages to deflect the goalbound effort over the bar.
71' CHARGED DOWN
Chelsea are not far away from a second, but Hazard sees his powerful shot from a narrow angle charged down by a defender.
70' HULL BOOKING
Livermore is booked for a trip on Torres.
69' HULL SUBSTITUTION
Hull make a change, with Robert Koren replacing the hard-working Meyler.
68' WASTED FREE-KICK
Huddlestone's free-kick dips too late and is a waste. He is extremely ambitious thinking he is going to beat Cech from 25 yards out wide on the left.
66' CHELSEA BOOKING
Cahill is booked for deliberate handball trying to cut out a ball intended for Sagbo. The defender claims it was his shoulder.
64' CHASING A SECOND
Chelsea string the passes together again. Hazard finds Willian, but his shot is some way wide of the left-hand upright.
61' JOSE NOT IMPRESSED
Ramires is hauled to the ground by Huddlestone inches outside the area. Chelsea have a free-kick on the left which is delivered by Willian. It is an attempted shot aimed for the far corner that drifts wide. Mourinho looks far from impressed.
58' GOAL DETAILS
A slick Chelsea passing move gets its reward. Luiz and Cole combine well and when the Belgian collects the ball he delays his shot initially before finally pulling the trigger and sending a rasping right-footer into the corner.
57' GOAL: HULL 0 CHELSEA 1
Eden Hazard gives Chelsea the lead.
53' DANGEROUS FREE-KICK
A handball from Bruce gives Chelsea a free-kick in a dangerous position. Luiz lines up a shot which McGregor is forced to parry away.
52' HEADER GOES OVER
Willian sends over a cross from the right and Ramires sees a back-header sail over the bar. Chelsea have come out looking more purposeful.
50' WIDE FROM HAZARD
Hazard cuts in off the left flank and drags a shot wide of goal, helped by a deflection off a Hull defender.
49' PLENTY IN RESERVE
Jose Mourinho has kept faith with his 11 starters for the second half, but it would be no surprise to see Juan Mata or Andre Schurrle warming up before too long.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Hull get the second half under way.
45' HT: HULL 0 CHELSEA 0
It's goalless at the break. Hull have been superb and dominated the opening period, with Petr Cech being called upon to deny Ahmed Elmohamady and Jake Livermore and Yannick Sagbo shooting wastefully wide after a blunder by John Terry. But the best chance of all fell the way of Oscar, who was somehow denied by a magnificent point-blank reflex save by Allan McGregor in the Hull goal.
44' DIPPING FREE-KICK
David Luiz goes down after an innocuous tackle to which Chelsea take exception and players surround the referee. Mr Clattenburg awards a free-kick and a curling effort from Luiz forces McGregor to tip over the bar.
40' HAZARD WARNING
A raking long diagonal pass from Luiz again almost puts in Hazard, but for once the first touch from the Belgian is sadly lacking.
37' SAVE OF THE SEASON
If you're long in the tooth like me, that McGregor save was reminiscent of one of the greatest saves of all time, made by Sunderland's Jim Montgomery to deny Peter Lorimer in the 1973 FA Cup final.
35' BRILLIANT SAVE
Chelsea should be in front. Hazard's cross from the left deflects in the path of Oscar, who must score. The Brazilian's shot is somehow palmed over the bar by McGregor, who makes a quite brilliant save.
33' CLUTCHING AT AIR
McGregor comes for a Willian free-kick from the right but totally misses the ball. The Scot escapes, and is annoyed with the referee because replays show Ramires had held his arm which led to the mistake.
31' NOT FAR AWAY
A cheeky backheel from Oscar hits a Hull defender and bounces to safety, otherwise Ramires would have had a clear run in on goal.
28' TERRY AN EVER-PRESENT
JT looked washed up last season, but this campaign he has yet to miss a minute of Premier League football.
27' TERRY ESCAPES
Terry blunders horribly. His clearance is charged down by Livermore and the ball breaks to Sagbo, who shoots wide with only Cech to beat. What a chance that was.
24' CECH SAVES WELL
Sagbo holds up the ball near the left-hand corner flag and finds Livermore, who stings Cech's fingers with a vicious long-range strike. Bruce heads over from the resulting corner.
22' WORKING HARD
Just for a second it looks like Hazard is about to tee up Oscar, but Meyler makes an excellent sliding tackle to snuff out the danger.
21' KEEPING IT TIGHT
Steve Bruce will be delighted at how his side have started this match. Chelsea have not had a sniff of a chance in the opening quarter.
19' LYING DEEP IN DEFENCE
Chelsea will do well to catch Hull's defence high up the pitch with a long pass over the top today. The Tigers have caught just 21 opponents offside this season, the fewest in the Premier League.
16' BACK IN THE ACTION
Despite having had his foot trodden on and getting elbowed in the neck, Hazard is fine and returns to the action.
14' IN NEED OF TREATMENT
Hazard is down and needs treatment after a robust challenge from Huddlestone.
12' INTO THE SIDE-NETTING
Torres collects the ball inside the area and lets fly with a right-foot shot that deflects off Bruce and ends up in the side-netting.
10' TON UP FOR ELMOHAMADY
Elmohamady has now made 100 crosses this season, 27 more than any other player in the Premier League. But he has only one assist. Is that because the Egyptian's crosses are rubbish, or Hull's strikers are no better than average?
8' DIPPING SHOT
The first chance falls Hull's way. Elmohamady collects the ball 25 yards from goal and his dipping shot is stopped by Cech with some difficulty.
7' LUIZ THE PASS MASTER
A diagonal pass from David Luiz is not far away from putting in Hazard down the left. Chelsea look lively early on, but Hull have an impressive home record defensively.
5' LOOKING FOR GOALS
I would be worried if I was Yannick Sagbo and picked up my copy of the Hull Daily Mail this morning. The Hull paper has a story on its back page saying the Tigers are in for Everton's Nikica Jelavic and West Brom's Shane Long.
3' EARLY CHELSEA CORNER
Willian has picked up an injury to his hand in the early going, but it should not affect his participation. Chelsea win an early corner, but the home side clear.
2' PAYING THE PRICE
According to his Chelsea manager, David Luiz was preferred in midfield to John Obi Mikel because the latter missed two days of training this week to attend the African Player of the Year awards in Lagos.
1' HERE WE GO
Chelsea kick off, attacking the goal to our right.

0' PREVIEW
Chelsea will top the Premier League for the first time in more than three months if they can claim maximum points from their trip to Hull City in Saturday's early kick-off. It's a tougher task than it might first appear, though, as the newly-promoted Tigers have adjusted well to life in the top flight and have confounded many by battling their way up into the top half of the table. These two sides met on the opening day of the season in the first match back for Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho. Two early Chelsea goals could have led to a rout, but Hull dug in, learnt quickly and limited the damage, a 90-minute microcosm of their season so far. Defender Curtis Davies admitted Hull had been shell-shocked during the opening exchanges at Stamford Bridge, but warned the visitors they were in for a match. “I think we're a better side now,” he said. “We're confident we can beat anyone at the KC Stadium.” Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Fernando Torres was on the mark at Southampton on New Year's Day, marking the first time since October that Chelsea had benefited from goals from their strikers in successive Premier League outings. Midfield, though, is where the visitors' real threat lies and it's no real surprise with Oscar season looming that Chelsea's Brazil midfielder has been to the fore recently with goals in his last two outings. Among Premier League midfielders only Manchester City's Yaya Toure has more than the eight league goals netted by Eden Hazard this season and Chelsea's Belgium ace also has eight assists, joint top in the top flight alongside Arsenal's Mezut Ozil.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Chelsea have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 20 wins to four by Hull and seven games being drawn. On Humberside, Chelsea have seven wins to four by the Tigers, with a further four meetings ending up all square. The first meeting between the sides this season on Aug. 18 saw Chelsea win 2-0 with goals from Oscar (13 mins) and Frank Lampard (25). The last meeting at the KC Stadium on Feb. 2, 2010, finished in a 1-1 draw, Didier Drogba netting just before half-time to cancel out an earlier strike from Steven Mouyokolo. You have to go right back to Oct. 25, 1988, for Hull's last win in this fixture, a 3-0 triumph at Boothferry Park, though to be fair to the Tigers, these sides were in different divisions for 19 successive seasons up until the 2008-09 campaign.
0' FORM GUIDE
Chelsea start the day in third place with 43 points, two points behind leaders Arsenal and one behind second-placed Manchester City. The Blues have a so-so away record this season, winning four, drawing three and losing three, and dropping 15 points on the road compared to just two at home. Chelsea are looking for a fourth successive league victory and have lost just one of their last 10. Hull have won just once in their last seven, but that was a 6-0 thrashing of hapless Fulham in their last home outing and this is the last of a tough run of fixtures since the start of December which has seen them play Liverpool (twice), Arsenal and Manchester United. The Tigers have picked up 18 points at home, losing only to Crystal Palace and United.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Hull manager Steve Bruce is hoping his squad has recovered from a sickness bug that has laid low nine of his players to some degree over the past week. Paul McShane (ankle) could be out for a month and Sone Aluko (Achilles) and Robbie Brady (groin) are still missing. Chelsea will again be without Frank Lampard (calf) and Branislav Ivanovic and Marco van Ginkel (both knee). Kevin De Bruyne has been linked with an imminent move away from Stamford Bridge and is unlikely to feature.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mark Clattenburg, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2004. The Tyne and Wear official has shown 45 yellow cards in 13 Premier League games this season and awarded two penalties. Clattenburg dismissed six players last season, the most among top-flight referees, and two of whom were Chelsea players, Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres, who both got their marching orders in the same home defeat against Manchester United. Since dismissing West Brom's Goran Popov in the home defeat by Spurs in February Clattenburg had gone 34 matches in all competitions without producing a red card, a run broken on New Year's Day thanks to Kevin Nolan's inexplicable off-the-ball kick on Fernando Amorebieta. The referee's assistants today are Gary Beswick and Mark Scholes, while Craig Pawson is the fourth official.
