Aston Villa vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' GUNNERS RETURN TO THE TOP
Arsenal return to the top of the Premier League table after gaining revenge for their opening day defeat against Aston Villa with a 2-1 win. Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud handed Arsene Wenger's men a comfortable lead, but a positive second-half display from Villa was rewarded when Christian Benteke pulled a goal back, although it wasn't enough in the end. After defender Nathan Baker was taken off for concussion Villa boss Paul Lambert changed his formation from 5-3-2 to 4-4-2 and the Gunners took full advantage with two quick-fire goals. After 34 minutes Nacho Monreal escaped down the left and he was given time to pick out Wilshere on the edge of the area. The England midfielder controlled the ball before firing his left-foot shot beyond Brad Guzan into the far corner. Villa were breached again 17 seconds from the restart and it was Wilshere who turned provider. He found Giroud with a dinked pass and the Frenchman pulled away from Ron Vlaar and Matthew Lowton before sending his left-foot strike into the back of the net for his ninth Premier League goal of the season. Villa finished the game strongly and pulled a goal back after 76 minutes when Lowton's delicious right-foot cross was headed home by Benteke for his first Premier League goal in 12 matches. And despite a late flurry of attacking, Villa were unable to grab a share of the spoils which meant the Londoners extended their unbeaten record at Villa Park to 15 matches.
90' FULL-TIME
Arsenal defeat Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park and return to the top of the Premier League table.
90' POOR PICK OUT
Mesut Ozil fails to pick out an umarked Olivier Giroud in the area. Jack Wilshere is shown a yellow card for a late challenge off the ball a few seconds earlier.
90' GAME IS SO STRETCHED
Villa are lumping the ball into Christian Benteke, but he fails to make a header and then Leandro Bacuna hands Arsenal possession but Santi Cazorla's low effort is easily saved by Brad Guzan.
90' SIX ADDED MINUTES
There will be six additional minutes of stoppage time and Villa boss Paul Lambert is jumping up and down the touchline.
90' GREAT CHANCE
Matthew Lowton's deep cross is met by Christian Benteke at the far post, but he fails to get enough power in his neck muscles to send the ball past Wojciech Szczesny.
88' TENSE FINISH
Villa are pressing Arsenal all over the park now, but is time against them? Kieran Gibbs' surging run comes to an end after he fails to deliver a cross from the byline.
86' THE OX IS BACK
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is called into action late on and he replaces the injured substitute, Tomas Rosicky.
85' AGBONLAHOR BOOKED
Mesut Ozil goes over and Gabby Agbonlahor is shown a yellow card for tripping him over. Paul Lambert's men are doing all the pressing though.
84' VILLA PRESSING
Fabian Delph has a dig from deep and then Christian Benteke almosts latches onto a cross from the right with Wojciech Szczesny scurrying across his line.
82' CHANGE OF SHIRT
Rather worrying news for Villa is that Arsenal have scored 12 goals in the final 15 minutes of matches this season - more than any other Premier League side. Tomas Rosicky is receiving medical attention with blood pouring out of his nose. He'll need a change of shirt!
79' ROSICKY DOWN INJURED
Tomas Rosicky is down injured but Villa play on through Christian Benteke. After the ball goes out of play for a throw, Mesut Ozil decides to square up to the big Belgian. Probably not a good idea!
76' BENTEKE HEADS HOME
Matthew Lowton's delicious right-foot cross evades three Arsenal defenders and falls to Christian Benteke who heads the ball into the back of the onion sack. That's his sixth goal of the season and his first Premier League goal in 12 matches. Game on at Villa Park!
76' GOOOAAALLL!!!
CHRISTIAN BENTEKE
75' BENTEKE CLOSE
Andreas Weimann replaces Karim El Ahmadi in an attacking change and seconds later Christian Benteke snatches at the ball and sends it flying wide of Wojciech Szczesny's far post.
74' JUST WIDE
Kieran Gibbs checks back on his right foot and sets up Olivier Giroud but the Frenchman pulls his left-foot curler wide of the mark.
72' POOR TOUCH
Mesut Ozil's touch lets him down for the first time tonight and Villa keep possession in the middle of the park until Matthew Lowton hands the ball back to the men in yellow shirts.
70' ROSICKY COMES ON
Karim El Ahmadi takes a clattering from Mathieu Flamini as Arsenal make another change. Tomas Rosicky replaces 18-year-old German prospect Serge Gnabry.
68' ARSENAL CHANGE
As expected Kieran Gibbs comes on for Nacho Monreal, so it's like for like. Christian Benteke immediately tries to run Gibbs, but the full-back is up to speed with the game and makes the block.
66' GOOD STRIKE
Gabby Agbonlahor looks to find Fabian Delph in the box, but the midfielder is unable to climb high. Karim El Ahmadi then sets up Ashley Westwood to hit it first time and although the ball was moving through the air, Wojciech Szczesny just about managed to hold on.
63' WELL HANDLED
Santi Cazorla's long-range shot is well handled by Brad Guzan while at the other end Gabby Agbonlahor sells Antonio Luna short and Arsenal win the throw.
61' ALERT GOALKEEPING
Nacho Monreal is back on the field. He won't want to lose his place in the side to Kieran Gibbs, who has been warming up. Serge Gnabry breaks beyond the Villa backline but Brad Guzan comes out of his area to head the ball away.
59' FINE TACKLE
Ron Vlaar comes flying across to make a stunning tackle to deny Nacho Monreal from close-range and now the Arsenal player is down holding his ankle. That is what you call a proper blood and thunder challenge and a fair one too!
57' NO GOAL
Olivier Giroud curls the ball into the bottom corner but the flag had already been raised against Jack Wilshere, who took a touch when standing in an offside position.
55' BENTEKE PENALTY SHOUT
Leandro Bacuna fires his left-foot free-kick into the wall and then Christian Benteke feels he is held by defender Laurent Koscielny, but Neil Swarbrick doesn't want to get involved despite the Villa protests.
53' TRICKY AGBONLAHOR
The 6-3 defeat at Man City in December is the only time Arsenal have conceded more than one goal in their last 15 Premier League away matches, so it would be a major surprise to see a Villa fightback here. Kieran Gibbs starts warming up on the touchline for Arsenal as Gabby Agbonlahor earns his side a free-kick about 28 yards from goal.
50' BACUNA DRIVE
It's been a positive start to the second half from Villa who are looking to get the ball into the box a lot earlier. Substitute Leandro Bacuna slams his low drive straight down the throat of Wojciech Szczesny, but that's much better from Paul Lambert's men.
48' HAMMERED OVER
Bacary Sagna gets across to tackle Leandro Bacuna. The resulting corner finds it way to Karim El Ahmadi but he thumps his right-foot strike way over the crossbar and into the Holte End.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Arsene Wenger has moved to play down suggestions a loan deal was in the pipeline for Real Madrid starlet Alvaro Morata. Arsenal have also been linked with Fulham veteran Dimitar Berbatov, as well as a big-money transfer for Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa. On the evidence of the first 45 minutes, they don't need anybody. Villa, however, are a side with problems. They are winless in their last four home Premier League matches, drawing two and losing two since a 2-0 win over Cardiff in early November.
45' GUNNERS HEADING BACK TOP
Arsenal are on course to return to the top of the Premier League table as they lead Aston Villa 2-0 in the Monday night football. After defender Nathan Baker was taken off for concussion Villa boss Paul Lambert changed his formation from 5-3-2 to 4-4-2 and the Gunners took full advantage with two quick-fire goals. After 34 minutes Nacho Monreal escaped down the left and he was given time to pick out Jack Wilshere on the edge of the area. The England midfielder controlled the ball before firing his left-foot shot beyond Brad Guzan into the far corner. Villa, who have managed to keep just one clean sheet in their last eight matches against Arsenal in all competitions were breached again second from the restart and it was Wilshere who turned provider. He found Olivier Giroud with a dinked pass and the Frenchman pulled away from Ron Vlaar and Matthew Lowton before sending his left-foot strike into the back of the net for his ninth Premier League goal of the season. Paul Lambert's men have offered little in attack and have looked second best for the majority of the match.
45' HALF-TIME
Arsenal lead Aston Villa 2-0 at the break thanks to two quick-fire goals from Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud.
45' DELPH BLOCKED OUT
It's a good end to the half for Villa but Fabian Delph runs down a blind alley with Gabby Agbonlahor and Christian Benteke making runs on the opposite side of the field.
45' CAZORLA ANNOYED
Santi Cazorla is annoyed after conceding a needless foul as Arsenal attacked in numbers. Leandro Bacuna wins his side a corner off Nacho Monreal.
45' STOPPAGE TIME
The Villans have scored just three goals in their last six Premier League matches, never scoring more than one in a match which doesn't bode well. We're into EIGHT added minutes of stoppage time at Villa Park following that knock to Nathan Baker earlier in the half.
42' TOTAL DOMINANCE
Arsenal have enjoyed 69 per cent of possession in this match and their dominance has eventually turned into goals. It's up to Villa to attack their opponents now as Gabby Agbonlahor breaks the offside trap, but fails to deliver a decent cross from the left.
39' UNHAPPY BENTEKE
Arsenal have the best away record in the Premier League, taking 22 points from their 10 matches away from the Emirates. Their 23 goals to date is the most away from home this season for any team in the top flight. Christian Benteke goes to ground, but fails to earn his side a free-kick.
36' IT'S ANOTHER ONE
It's two goals in two minutes for Arsenal as their dominance pays off at Villa Park. Jack Wilshere turns provider this time for Olivier Giroud who pulls away from Ron Vlaar and Matthew Lowton before burying his left-foot effort into the corner. That's his ninth Premier League goal of the season!
36' GOOOAAALLL!!!
OLIVIER GIROUD
34' CLASSY FINISH
Nacho Monreal escapes down the left and he feeds Jack Wilshere who fires his left-foot shot beyond Brad Guzan into the far corner.
34' GOOOAAALLL!!!
JACK WILSHERE
32' MONREAL CARDED
Ciaran Clark does well to make a clearance after a poor pass to him from goalkeeper Brad Guzan. Fabian Delph feels his is felled by Jack Wilshere, but once again Neil Swarbrick allows play to continue. Nacho Monreal is shown a yellow card after hacking down the pacy Gabby Agbonlahor down the right channel.
29' DANGEROUS DELIVERY
Gabby Agbonlahor takes a whack in the back from Nacho Monreal but play continues. Serge Gnabry's shirt is being pulled back by Karim El Ahmadi and that leaves referee Neil Swarbrick no choice but to award Arsenal the free-kick on the right edge of the area. Brad Guzan punches Santi Cazorla's dangerous inswinging delivery away.
26' END TO END
Santi Cazorla's ambitious pass is overhit and Villa earn a throw. Leandro Bacuna's long boot upfield finds Gabby Agbonlahor who gives Laurent Koscielny a really tough time and almost squirms away from him. This is much better from the home side as the game starts to open up.
23' SWITCH OF FORMATION
Villa have switched to a traditional 4-4-2 system after Nathan Baker's injury and they soon create an opportunity through Karim El Ahmadi, who volleys the ball over the crossbar from Leandro Bacuna's cross.
21' BACUNA COMES ON
Nathan Baker goes off on a stretcher to a huge round of applause from all four sides of the ground. Leandro Bacuna comes on in his place then after a seven minute delay at the very least.
19' BAKER COMING OFF
It's not looking good for Nathan Baker who looks to be coming off on a stretcher with Leandro Bacuna ready to come on in his place.
17' BAKER DOWN INJURED
Nathan Baker has gone down to ground after taking the full force of Serge Gnabry's shot and is in need of some medical attention. Leandro Bacuna starts his warm-up routine on the touchline as a precaution.
15' DELPH GOES CLOSE
Laurent Koscielny allows the ball to run across his body and Christian Benteke finds Fabian Delph in space on the edge of the box, but he pulls his left-foot shot wide of the mark. That was half a chance for Paul Lambert's men!
13' WELCOME RELIEF
Anywhere will do for Karim El Ahmadi, but the ball is coming back quickly. Ron Vlaar is felled by Olivier Giroud as he struggles to clear his lines and that's welcome relief to the Villa supporters in the Holte End.
11' PENALTY SHOUT
Olivier Giroud feels he is bundled over in the area by defender Ron Vlaar, but play continues. The hosts are playing like an away side, sitting deep and counter-attacking. The Gunners seem happy to keep possession and try and prize an opening.
9' WELL HANDLED
Gabby Agbonlahor is penalised for a dangerous high foot and the visitors get on with it by spraying the ball about the park. Olivier Giroud's deflected effort from 25 yards is well handled by Brad Guzan.
7' HEADED WIDE
Arsenal have suddenly taken a firm control of this game and come close to scoring as Bacary Sagna's delicious right-wing cross is flicked wide of Brad Guzan's far post by striker Olivier Giroud.
5' EL AHMADI BOOKED
Villa are looking to play with an intensity as they look to press Arsenal high up the park. Referee Neil Swarbrick books Karim El Ahmadi for a shoulder charge on Jack Wilshere. That's not the kind of start Villa boss Paul Lambert wanted to see from his side. The Moroccan will have to watch himself for the rest of this game now.
3' DIFFERENT SYSTEMS
Arsenal are unbeaten at Villa Park in the league since December 1998, winning seven and drawing seven of 14. Villa have only won one of their last seven at home and manager Paul Lambert has set up with a 5-3-2 which can switch to a 3-5-2 formation. Meanwhile, the Gunners have set up in a 4-2-3-1 system with Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud all working in tandem.
1' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Here we go then at Villa Park, which is full to capacity for this big Monday night clash. The pitch is in pristine condition although the weather is chilly in the West Midlands as you might expect for this time of year. The home team are wearing their traditional claret and blue number while Arsenal - followed by a large number of away supporters in the top and bottom tier of the Doug Ellis Stand - are in their yellow and blue kit. Both sets of supporters are making plenty of noise ahead of this one.
0' ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS
Villa boss Paul Lambert has made two changes to the side which won their last Premier League match at Sunderland. Ciaran Clark and Karim El Ahmadi come in with Leandro Bacuna and Andreas Weimann dropping to the bench. Ron Vlaar is fit and captains the side while Nathan Baker has also recovered from a niggle. Villa are playing with three central midfielders and start with Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor up front.
0' ARSENAL TEAM NEWS
Arsene Wenger makes three changes to the side which beat Cardiff on New Year's Day. In come Serge Gnabry for his third Premier League start of the season. Mikel Arteta (calf) is out which means Mezut Ozil returns to the starting XI and Olivier Giroud is back from an ankle problem and illness to start up front. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back for the first time since the opening day of the season and takes his place on the substitutes bench.

0' MATCH PREVIEW
Arsenal will set out to return to the top of the table when they travel to Aston Villa for the Monday night football. Since shipping six at Manchester City last month, the Gunners rearguard have been breached just once, at West Ham on New Year's Day, to restore their status of holding the best defensive record in the top flight. Arsene Wenger's men have a superb record at Villa Park, where they were last beaten in the Premier League back in December 1998. Tonight's trip to the Midlands will also present an opportunity for the players to lay to rest their 3-1 home defeat by Paul Lambert's men on the opening day of the season which sparked much criticism of the direction Arsenal where heading. Villa, meanwhile, are on a poor run of form, having won only one and lost five of their last seven games in all competitions. Their record at their own ground for the entire campaign to date has been disappointing, with it showing just two victories and six defeats from 10 top-flight fixtures. And last weekend they suffered a 2-1 FA Cup third-round reverse at Villa Park against Sheffield United - a club that have been struggling this term towards the lower end of Sky Bet League One, so tonight represents a chance to cause an upset of their own and climb into the top half of the table. 0' LAMBERT UNDERSTANDS FRUSTRATION
Villa boss Paul Lambert has expressed his understanding for the supporters' frustration following boos at the final whistle in the Sheffield United game. The Scot called for them to "stick with it" and do all they can to help the team against Arsenal. "I don't have any problem with the crowd," Lambert said. "If the team is not performing, then you expect people to vent their frustration - that is normal. But we are a young side. Because you are in your second year, it might be a different view, but if they can stick with it and see us through the hard times when we need them... because we certainly need them. They have been excellent for us overall, and we expect if we are not performing that certain things will happen. But we're hoping that they will get right behind us."
0' EARLY ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS
Aston Villa will assess the condition of defenders Ron Vlaar and Nathan Baker ahead of the game. Both club captain Vlaar and Baker sat out last weekend's FA Cup third-round loss to Sheffield United with calf and hamstring problems respectively. Forward Gabriel Agbonlahor, who also missed the cup tie, and goalkeeper Brad Guzan are fit despite having had niggles, but the game is too soon for midfielder Chris Herd and defender Joe Bennett to make their comebacks after injury.
0' IT'S NOT ABOUT REVENGE
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says the club have already forgotten about the opening day defeat to Villa and has insisted: "It is not about revenge. The opening day of the season is not Villa's fault, and what happened after the game is not Villa's fault. We just had to face dissatisfaction from people and our fans, that was completely normal." Victory would send the north London club back to the top of the Premier League table and the Frenchman added: "Villa is just another game. What is always important is the next game and to produce a good performance."
0' EARLY ARSENAL TEAM NEWS
Arsenal expect to have forward Olivier Giroud back from an ankle problem and illness, but England forward Theo Walcott has been ruled out for the rest of the season and the World Cup after suffering knee ligament damage in the FA Cup third-round win over Tottenham. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, fit again following his own serious knee injury, could be back in the squad having played for the under-21s on Thursday. Fellow midfielder Aaron Ramsey (thigh) and defender Kieran Gibbs (calf) are also closing in on a return. Captain Thomas Vermaelen (knee) is doubtful, while Nicklas Bendtner (ankle), Yaya Sanogo (back) and Abou Diaby (knee) continue their rehabilitation.
0' MATCH OFFICIALS
The referee in charge of this encounter is Neil Swarbrick from Lancashire. He has taken charge of nine matches this season showing 28 yellow cards and no reds. His assistants down the touchline are Scott Ledger and Andy Halliday, while the fourth official is Martin Atkinson.
