Newton smiled and even stopped to pose for a picture Monday with his newly enhanced armor before walking into practice, throwing passes and going through drills as normal.
Analysis: It was the Newton's first practice since Aug. 22 when he had his ribs stepped on during a preseason game against the New England Patriots.

The team made the announcement Friday, after indicating it hoped to sign Newton to a long-term deal. By exercising the option on Newton's rookie deal, the Panthers will have more time to work out a longer contract.
Analysis: Newton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, is slated to make $3.37 million this season and would receive $14.67 million in 2015 if he doesn't sign a contract extension before then. Newton completed a career-high 61.7 percent of his passes last season and threw for 24 touchdowns and ran for six. He has started all 48 games during his three seasons with Carolina.

Panthers team physician Robert Anderson performed the surgery on Wednesday in Charlotte.
Analysis: Panthers head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion says in a release that "Dr. Anderson did not find anything unexpected in the procedure and the surgery went well." Newton first tweaked the ankle in a regular season game against New Orleans late in the season and then experienced some additional problems in Carolina's playoff loss to San Francisco on Jan. 12.
